Something just dawned on me - there are the same number of songs by British artists in the UK iTunes top 10 as there are in the US iTunes top 10 :drama: And there are LESS American acts in the US top 10!

Although, to be fair, the US have both Rihanna and Britney Spears (you know, that artist which is flopping at the moment?) twice in their top 10.

How are there less American acts in the US top ten, every one of those songs is American excluding ADELE. Same with our itunes top ten

I think he's counting the artists on collabs seperately? So the US have:

Rihanna (x2), Britney Spears (x2), Katy Perry, Kanye West, Black Eyed Peas, Jeremih, 50 Cent, Jennifer Lopez, Pitbull (x2), Ne-Yo, Chris Brown, Lil Wayne, Busta Rhymes = 13 (possibly 14, who's Nayer?).

We have between 13 and 16 (I don't know where Lauren Bennet, GoonRock and Benny Benassi reside, although I'd assume the latter isn't American judging by the music he makes, although I'd guess the ones on Party Rock Anthem are).

And Rihanna isn't American.
And Rihanna isn't American.

I think we're going by where they live atm, rather than where they're born. Or at least that's how I always do it.

And Rihanna isn't American.

Yeah, but her entire career has been based in, and is a product of, America. Do you really think she'd still be topping the charts right now if she was still based in Barbados? She wouldn't have even got off the ground in that case!

I mean, we're talking music here. As a person, she's Barbadian, yes, and she'd definitely identify as that herself. But I think it's pretty clearly that as a recording artist (which ISN'T the same, and should be what matters in this case) she is American. And I couldn't give a fook what Wikipedia says on the subject, personally.

Anyway, it's not like America is supporting songs that we haven't supported already. That stat just shows how behind they are on anything that isn't their own music, really. It's probably more embarrassing for our charts at the moment that acts like Natalia Kills got top 10 in Germany yet can't even make top 100 in their home country.

Does that make Cheryl Cole American then :P

Wow. I never knew Natalia Kills was British! :o I always assumed she was American with her connections with will.i.am and Akon.

Then again, I thought Estelle was American, so what do I know? :coffee:

Well, I wouldn't say so yet. She's only just moved there. And we're talking about them as artists, not as people, anyway.

But I mean, look at Taio Cruz and Jay Sean, for example. I went to the US, and most people there thought he was American (although I guess it's quite rare they have artits so successful there that aren't from the country). Heck, even I have to keep reminding myself he's British. Like once I was posting a list of the US #1s from 2010, to make a point how they have such longer chart runs than the British ones, and I put Dynamite in the US list. :drama: So yeah, after a few years, Cheryl could be like that.

When I said the USA top 10 has less American acts than in the UK I was indeed referring to the fact Rihanna is Barbadian.

Well, she's probably moved to America now, so easy mistake to make :D Although I don't really know for sure, I barely know anything about her. Wikipedia says she is based between London and Los Angeles, so depending on your definition you could call her music half-American?

And the thing with Jay Sean is he WAS British, and based in Britain, when he started out. It's only since 2009 or whenever it was that Down took off that he practically f***ed off to America. I think it's a little different to people like Rihanna who have always been from America (musically). I mean, Jay Sean basically owes his career to Britain, Rihanna owes her career to America. That's where their musical roots basically lie.

But I guess it depends on your perspective. Some will always consider Rihanna Barbadian regardless. I think it's pretty ridiculous, personally, but whatever

Yeah, I see what you mean.

Yeah, Jay Sean does owe his career to the UK to be fair, so I guess people could always consider him a British artist in that respect. I never think of him as British anymore, probably because he doesn't do those things that UK artists do a lot anymore. Like I haven't heard him do a radio interview in ages, I haven't seen him appear on T4, or MTV or anything for ages either. The last time I saw him on MTV (like the humble little interviews-type MTV) must've been like 18 months ago, and I remember being shocked because he was saying that he was going to studying medicine, but gave that up to pursue music! :o Worked out well for him though.

places 21-40 are so much more interesting at the moment - gonna be close as to what makes it into the chart come Sunday

Edited by ElectroBoy

^That's what seems to have been the most interesting part of the chart for the last few weeks. And too often, the ones on 30-40 on Itunes don't make it in, in favour of the older tracks which have much more steady runs throughout the week.
I love that Shakira keeps re-entering the top 200 with Waka Waka, back up to 184, must have shifted a fair few copies by now!

Yeah, it's sold over 150,000 now! :o I can imagine it selling a bit more during the summer too.

I think we're going by where they live atm, rather than where they're born. Or at least that's how I always do it.

Why would you ever do that?

Brihanna now number 7 :o
Shakira for a crap peak has sold alot with Waka-Waka.

Yeah. Although I think the song has done very well for the promotion it got. It would've been nice if it got to #1 though, and was a bigger hit. :(

Yeah, because the World Cup wasn't much promo at all  For a novelty song - which, let's be honest is what it was - it was never gonna get radio backing, and lots of TV play.
