Yeah, because the World Cup wasn't much promo at all  For a novelty song - which, let's be honest is what it was - it was never gonna get radio backing, and lots of TV play.

I'm not quite sure it can be seen as a "novelty sont". I don't rate it much, but it's not Bob the Builder or Crazy Frog...

Only the UK took it for a "novelty song", in most countries it was seen as a proper tune and was huge.

A novelty song? Why, because it includes African chants in it? That makes it world music. It was all over the radio and TV in Europe, and was a big hit as a result. This is one of the biggest cases I have that the music industry in the UK is xenophobic as hell.

ROFLMAO!

If they *were*, then why on earth would there be so much music by black artists in the charts nowadays?

I didn't say it was bad, but it served it's purpose.. It was the song for the World Cup in South Africa and that's what it was, I wouldn't expect it to be a huge UK hit and it wasn't

OK, what I mean is Europhobic or non-English-speaker-phobic (is there a word for that?) Most of the black artists in the charts are UK or US, who share a language and culture. When was the last huge #1 hit by a European singer (notice not artist, a DJ/producer can be from any country).

Yes, you're 100% right IMO. The UK market is pretty reluctant to "foreign sounding" music. Once you take British music and r'n'b/pop US music out, there isn't much left in the charts.

That's why Shakira never makes it big with her more "latino" singles ("La tortura", "Waka waka", "Loca", etc.), and why European artist struggles to make it big in the UK too (which is close to impossible when they don't sing in English).

That being said, the UK scene has A LOT of diversity. It's not like it's all about one genre of music.

At the risk of being lynched the S&M remix is foul. A pretty decent, anthemic song ruined by what sounds like a wailing robot-banshee lovechild. Britney really is awful :( Heck even Rihanna doesn't sound as good as she does on the original.
F*** yeah, Dionne and Emily both top 40!!! :w00t:

29. Bass Cannon - Flux Pavilion

Why is this climbing so much now? It's a good thing, but... why?

37. Me and Tennessee (From the Motion Picture "Country Strong") - Tim McGraw & Gwyneth Paltrow

And why is this doing so well? This didn't even do well in the USA as far as I can remember...

63. Backseat (feat. The Cataracs & Dev) - New Boyz

Gotta say I never expected New Boyz to have anything approaching a hit here. I quite like their song 'You're A Jerk' :kink:

And and the original S&M is now down to #18 - I guess it is going to fall quite a bit after all :( I don't get why it's doing this, it's not as if the Britney version is the 'single version' or anything...

The UK market isn't xenophobic in terms of the people that purcharse records. There's been some proper $h!t come over from Europe over the years that have been decent sized hits when they've been promoted. UK residents can't buy something that they're not aware of. It's entirely record labels fault, releasing a version of a song all over Europe but not bothering here, waiting 6 months and relasing a more generic pop sounding version....

I find it quite logical. Even if both versions are different, now that the remix is higher, when people will be interested in the song, they'll see that one and buy it. They won't go downloading both versions even if they are clearly different. "Oooh I like that S&M song, I shall buy it. Mmmm there's a version with Britney, that's two hot artists for the same price, so I should get that version I guess". ^_^

But surely it's the original version people are actually hearing? I do get your logic but I don't see why S&M has fallen as much as it has (more in the USA but it's also doing it here)

Yes but it's quite obvious, this is just novelty! In 2 weeks time, the original will be far ahead of the remix. It will probably be in 50s once the buzz dies down! <_<

Not sure about that, the top 10 effect could keep it in the top 10 for a while I reckon. I'm more worried about the far superior original potentially dropping out of the top 40 :(

274. Together (Radio Edit) - Hervé

Well, you took your time to show up in the top 300...

Someone else agrees with me - Britney ruins it

That Country Strong song showing up is bizzare... I did hear on Radio 2 (my uncle had it on not me :P) but how the hell is it top 40? :o

Good point and it is a shame that anything remotely different is seen as a novelty here. There is brilliant music coming out of South Africa, Europe and Asia but UK radio would never think to research into that and play it.The American domination no matter how crap the music will continue to dominate the UK charts. How sad that Joe Mcelderry has been dropped Syco are beyond belief.

Its because you're comparing it to a Wednesday 1.08pm update.

All album tracks (inlcuding Now tracks) peak around mid-day Thursday and then begin to drop. But because you're comparing now to Wednesday, you're effectively looking at either side of the peak, and the songs would still be in the ascendency on Wednesday (on the left side of the curve) as opposed to now (on the right side).

Ah. Fair enough. Still, seems odd they peak so late in the week...
