For anyone wondering about California Gurls, the Big Top 40 Show incorporates airplay into its chart, which is why California Gurls charted.

 

I'm really glad the official charts don't include airplay, or else we'd get things like that happening a lot. :puke:

It actually makes for quite a good listen tbh, in the sense that they literally play music non-stop for 3 hours, and they play the top 10 twice too. They don't skip songs, and the commentary is a lot better. It's just a brief 20 discussion about the song, rather than on Radio 1, where it can be up to a 10 minute discussion about nothing.

 

The actual chart methodology itself is dreadful, but from a listening point of view, it's better than Radio 1.

 

A cynical part of me thinks the reason they include airplay (it's commercial airplay only) is because it makes those songs that Radio 1 support chart lower, and it makes the songs commercial radio support chart higher.

I think it was orginally released about 5 months ago and did absolutely nothing but they are re-releasing it and now it is getting some video airplay and very small amount of radio airplay too, so they removed it from itunes about a month or two ago and re-added it last night. A fake version was floating about 100-120 all week last week, so it should go top 40 this week and its airplay has is only minimal and is growing still, so it should peak at a later date.

I actually like the Big Top 40 show. It feels really fresh and is quite fast paced and I like how they keep updated and playing the top 10. I actually listen to this now and just read the Radio 1 update online.

Yeah. Well, the chart itself is actually very slow, but the show is presented much better. It's song, then the next song, then the next song. It's very rapid. :D And they fit (almost) 50 songs into 3 hours, so Radio 1 should be able to manage 40.

 

It's also a bit awkward since due to their chart mechanics with the top 10 an everything, they sometimes have songs charting twice, and some songs that are selling well, but don't actually chart at all (when they fall out of the top 10 on iTunes during the show).

 

And songs chart earlier sometimes. Like Unorthodox is on its 2nd week on the Big Top 40 Show, whilst it's a new entry on the official chart.
