Congratulations Adele on reaching #2 in the Billboard Hot 100 this week with Rolling In The Deep - (hope you can make it one place higher next week).

The last UK act to get this high in the US chart was back in 2008 - Leona Lewis with Bleeding Love which went on to make #1.

Rolling In The Deep is also peaking well overseas also:

Germany #1

France #3

Australia #19

Canada #7

Ireland #2

Holland #1

New Zealand #3

Norway #8

Switzerland #1

Greece #2

Belgium (Walloon) #5

Belgium (Flanders) #2

Also reaching Top 10

Croatia with Someone Like You currently #6

Slovenia

Serbia

Slovakia

Hungary

Brazil

Taio Cruz and Jay Sean have both had #1 hits in the US since Leona. Not that anything should be taken away from Adele, as neither of these acts simulataneously had the biggest selling album of the year. She's definitely the biggest British star in the US overall since Leona whether she gets to #1 or not.

Didn't Coldplay also go to #1 in the US with Viva La Vida after Leona?

I was about to post this - yes they did in Summer 08.

Thought so :D Well regardless, it's a huge achievement for Adele - especially considering her success was nowhere near as big as this last era (anywhere in the world) and this time she seems to be smashing everywhere. I only hope Rolling In The Deep can go that one place higher for her and the Brits.

I wonder what the biggest gap was with no UK acts hitting #1 in the US, were there any between Elton John (1997) and James Blunt (2006)?

Taio Cruz has never reached number one on Hot 100. Dynamite (#2 last year) has sold almost 5 million copies though

The latest UK-based number one is Down by Jay Sean featuring Lil Wayne (2009).

re- Rolling in the Deep, it has a chance of reaching number one if she gets a performance slot on Idol. Before that it looks like E.T. will dominate for a few weeks. RITD's airplay audience are half of E.T.'s and both are increasing.

Break Your Heart got to #1 in the US last year for Taio Cruz though, making it the most recent UK act at #1.

I don't think so... unless the Spice Girls did possibly.

Anyway, good to see a British act having so much success over there, although I don't see Someone Like You having a great deal of success there... it doesn't fit the Pop radio format anywhere near as well as RITD does.

There definitely wasn't. I remember it being reported at the time that he was the first since Elton John...

Spice Girls only had one US #1, in 1997 - that was earlier that year, before Elton John.

I think the closest in that period (that I remember, anyway) was Dido's Thank You - got to #3 in 2001.

I remember being shocked when I heard that S Club 7's Never Had A Dream Come True had gone top ten in the US in 2001  Of all of the bands and songs I didn't think would ever break through there, that was pretty much top of the list! A lot of the British/Irish pop bands of the time had US hits actually didn't they? Spice Girls, All Saints, B*Witched, 5ive and who could forget BBMak which was curiously a big hit there before it was on here!

You're quite right - no UK acts hit #1 between these 2. In fact UK acts were thin on the ground in this period in the full Hot 100.

Both Take That & Robbie Williams solo only achieved 1 hit each. Back For Good peaked at #7 & Robbie reached the lower end of the charts with Millenium.

When was the last time there were 2 British acts in the US top 10? It looks like that could happen next week.

I think Jay Sean had one week where he was #9 with 'Down' and #10 with 'Do You Remember' but with 2 different acts I think it could have been a long time ago :o

...and that'd probably still be the case if Billboard weren't counting download sales. For me, download sales has been one of the best things to happen to the Billboard Chart.

In the early 00s it was literally airplay that dominated the chart - and that meant US RnB acts dominating. No wonder there were hardly any British acts making the top 100.

Now, had there been download sales included back then I'm sure that would've resulted in differences at #1 (ie; still think 'Toxic' by Britney Spears was the biggest example of a US #1 that never was).
