August 17, 201113 yr Image has never really been important to Kelly. Even when she's touring she's the type of girl to just wear a shirt and jeans (sometimes even barefoot). She used to care a lot about the magazines used to say about her image but I think after the Breakaway era she completely gave up with it. As much as I think she looked amazing in the Walk Away video, she does suit being a larger size. I wouldn't call her fat or overweight and I don't think there is any need to concern over her weight in terms of health. Also this girl is from Texas and I believe she still lives there now. She couldn't be further away from the bright lights, stick thin antics and the papz even if she tried. And she has no problem joking about it: APCu1lJka5o
August 17, 201113 yr But once again that is not the point I'm making. I'm not denying that she doesn't care about her image. I'm saying she really should care. It's all part and parcel of being a popstar. She recognises that she has to compromise by recording songs she wouldn't necessarily choose to so why not compromise on the image front too? It's almost as important if you're going to be a success today whether you like that fact or not.
August 17, 201113 yr Kelly may be cool with being 'larger' now but when she was skinny and toned she had no problem flaunting it at all!! She was constantly wearing boob tubes and showing off her tummy. And she looked spectacular.

It's almost as important if you're going to be a success today whether you like that fact or not. I wouldn't necessarily say she isn't recording the type of music that she wants to - I'm sure even after her contract is up with RCA she will still be making the odd Pop/Rock track. I mean look at My December - that was completely her and there were still some tracks on there that don't seem out of the ordinary for a Kelly Clarkson album. To compromise your image for the sake of someone else - isn't that a little bit false? People complain all the time about having all these manufactured acts who don't write and are styled based on the image the label want to portray. Adele who isn't the slimmest artist around has had mammoth success this year with her album and is proving to people sometimes image isn't everything. People listen to Adele and compliment her voice and whilst lyrically Kelly's music can't compare to Adele's, they have two of the best voices in Pop. Look at Because Of You - It wasn't Kelly's most successful songs but it is one of the most played records on radio in recent years. All I Ever Wanted was probably the most manufactured Kelly Clarkson album (after Thankful) and that went terribly. The whole thing with Ryan Tedder and Already Gone/Halo. Using leftovers from Katy Perry and Gone Til November. Even the overly photoshopped cover. I enjoyed the album but I can't say much for the overall success of the album.
August 17, 201113 yr ^ Let's not forget Aranda, either... gosh All I Ever Wanted was such a cover album lol.
August 18, 201113 yr Australia get the album October 21st and the single September 5th - I'm assuming album release we'll get a day before the US but the single probably a week or two before. Also I believe 'What Doesn't Kill You' is 'Stronger' after Ali Tamposi RT'd this: alitamposi RT @gagecarlsen: @alitamposi nbd. @kelly_clarkson is naming her album after your song! Soo cool! Congrats!< ;)
August 18, 201113 yr Popjustice has confirmed the single release date as October 9, and the album on October 24. Also, the talk on Kelly's weight comes off as a bit chauvinistic, Jark. Sure, you expect female artists to have the image, but if it were a male artist it would be completely different: you don't see people going around saying Cee Lo should lose weight, because that all contributes to his image. August 18, 201113 yr You're totally right but that's just the way it is. Female popstars have been heavily reliant on their image since Madonna first rose to popularity. That's how it is.
August 18, 201113 yr I greatly support this: kelly_clarkson New goal in life is to sing a duet with @amyleeev from Evanescence.
August 18, 201113 yr Good that it's held back, atm that week looks barren (of course we'll know more competition when the time comes nearer) so she should get a top 5, maybe a shock number 1 if the week stays barren - My Life managed it after all)!
August 18, 201113 yr I always love hearing me some new Clarkson. I think she looks fantastic. I understand what people are saying but I've always hoped that she is in the same vein as P!nk in that their image isn't crucial to their career like Katy Perry, Britney etc.
August 18, 201113 yr So if you're a female singer in 2011, you have to be thin to sell albums? Funny that, considering who the biggest selling female singer of 2011 is.. Edited August 18, 201113 yr by Scherz
August 18, 201113 yr  True, but Adele is actually really pretty. Still, a good example of how not everyone has to stereotypically hot, I mean it works for Adele!
August 18, 201113 yr Yes yes everybody can quote ONE EXAMPLE but that does involve furiously ignoring the fact that Adele does not make mainstream pop music. Scherz you have the Saturdays in your avatar, a great example of an artist who rely completely on their image as five attractive young girls to get by from one single to the next, frequently in varying states of undress, performing 'sexy' dance routines, blah blah. I can list you 99 examples of female popstars who have to sell themselves as well their music for every 1 you can give me to the contrary.
August 18, 201113 yr I suppose you're right Jark, Adele is really the only artist I can think of recently who's been huge internationally with singles and albums while rebelling against the stereotypical image. If you look at the current top 40: Cher Lloyd - looks a bit of a skank tbf. Christina Perri - she'll be a one-hit wonder anyway, but she's very pretty. Beyonce - probably the most stunning woman on Earth. Nicki Minaj - stereotypical big booty American rapper Adele - she's been covered Katy Perry - glamorous, super hot Alexandra Stan - always dressed skimply and (from what I've seen) marketed in a 'sexy' way Jennifer Lopez - MILF, she's generally regarded as one of the hottest women on Earth, has been for a while now. Jessie J - I guess she's kind of normal looking Nicole Scherzinger - glamorous, hot, sexy videos Rihanna - well, S&M. 'Nuff said tbh... It's only really Adele and Jessie who break the stereotype, and maybe Christina as she's pretty rather than the 'sexy' usually needed. And ofc Cher who (though I love her) looks a skank at times.
August 18, 201113 yr I agree although it's not even about being hot - Jessie is still slim and sexes herself up regardless of whether she's hot. I think people think I'm claiming Kelly to be some morbidly obese FOOT GROWTH or something. She's obviously very attractive but that doesn't mind she couldn't do with losing a few pounds still. I just feel that sometimes she shoots herself in the foot by being so stubborn about things like image.
August 18, 201113 yr Yeah, I agree on Jessie J. The whole thing is just the sexy image, whether they have it to flaunt or not, but Kelly hasn't been like that in ever. The men can get away with it a bit easier (for example Ed Sheeran, Calvin Harris and Example are all fairly normal looking blokes rather than being 'adonises' like Enrique/Jason DeRulo) but with women more or less everyone is presented as 'sexy', whether it be on covers or in videos.

But Kelly is not an artist that relies on her looks and posing in a state of undress, going from one single to another? It's her voice that makes her. If this were a brand new artist, I would say that you were right with your argument. But Kelly is an established artist, renown for her dislike of conformity. And she clearly is trying to do something about it because she has lost weight since the last era, but I think she's doing it more for her health than being 'marketable'.
