DIGGIN it. much more rocky/noisy/kind of perfect. 03. fang island - daisy on my CD last year actually, just as good though. fellow art school homiesss 04. track 4 wouldn't load on quictime vlc OR itunes 05. i recognize this song. i used to have it in my itunes i think. noisy and kind of anthemic but i don't really like it. maybe that danananakyord band? i dunno just NOT MY THING really but certainly not bad 06. parenthetical girls - young throats. incredible band perfect song. zac pennington is just so f***ing good, can't wait to see what he does in xiu xiu. so poppy i luv it 07. owen pallett - song song song one of my favs off he poos clouds <3 <3 <3 this is one of those songs i listen to and feel bad that i got this CD because it could be a great discovery for others, same with parenthetical girls 08. no idea what this is. fierce dancey track with this upbeat backing and it's just pretty all around GR8. the guitar bits that kick in halfway are kinda cheesy stereotypical dance $h!t but the beginning is really fabulous. 09. frankmusik - 3 little words. ages since i've heard this. it's not very good really. catchy chorus obviously. but in terms of pop songs i don't think it has an incredible amount of merit. 10. the-dream - yamaha. so good. r&b is one of my favorite genres of music especially in regards to mainstream work. the-dream is so talented, so glad someone luvs this song besides me 11. jj - pressure is a privilege right? samples (well pretty much just adds onto) dr. dre's / jay-z's under pressure. really swagged out, good. 12. this sounds like girl talk but i don't recognize it? i don't listen to him that extensively. pretty good mashup but if it's not girl talk not sure why this person is really bothering (girl talk sort of has a hold on mashups of this sort of nature (quick switching, tons of songs sampled, poppy)...unfortunately or fortunately i dunno). i recognized eve / jackson 5 / snoop dogg / dr. dre / m.i.a. 13. gang gang dance - princes OH $h!t GANG GANG. sometimes i listen to this and realize that tinchy snyder is on the track. so random looking back on it. saint dymphna is one of the greatest releases of the last decade. the progression from god's money to it is pretty unbelievable. 14. neon indian - laughing gas actually one of my favorite songs by him, kinda quick and punchy. digs it. 15. gobble gobble - where is my mind (PIXIES BLASPHEMY) another song i feel bad for stealing away from someone as a discovery. this song rules though, it goes so hard. gobble gobble offered to play a show in my basement LOL, really cool dudes, haven't talked to them in a while though 16. purity ring - ungirthed ugh i feel bad LOL i should stop blogging about music. great song though (and related to gobble gobble). everyone who hasn't heard this song should really go download it, pop perfection. 17. i don't know this song yay!! it's this really slinky r&b-ish jam, really smooth and dreamy. i dig it a lot. 18. don't know this one either and i like it even more. funky electronic backing with some really cool samples (i assume they're sampling something). gets kinda clitchy with crazy vocals. i like this quite a lot. gets even crazier near the end. i wanna see this band live and RAGEEEE, probably my favorite discovery from this CD? 19. very poppy track, sort of an 80s type of an aesthetic. this could be an outake from ladyhawke's debut instrumental version or something. i dig it but it feels a little hypemachine-y to me. 20. f*** buttons - olympians got excited when i saw how long this was but then sad when it wasn't a discovery. ): such a good song though, more people here should really listen to f*** buttons. they do a lot of really interesting things for electronic music, a very intense listening experience. i'm sorry i knew so much ugh! if anyone wants a link hit me up though, it's a really good mix.

May 22, 201114 yr 17. Skindred - Rat Race: I though you would despise this song. I was right. I really got into this reggae-metal band recently, despite not being much of a metal fan (Lacuna Coil and Iron Maiden aside). Obviously a very niche thing. good choice. i'm pretty sure i know who's Ben's one is, but i won't ruin it by saying/embassas myself by getting it wrong.
May 22, 201114 yr You're quite right. Who Needs Guitars Anyway? A) Me, and in Plentiful Supply was indeed my compilation. As you've probably guessed, the title is a snarky riposte to the Alice Deejay album. The picture in the artwork is taken from the anime series FLCL (pronounced Fooly Cooly), and is a scene where an alien investigator is about to save a town from destruction from a falling satellite by using her bass guitar as a cricket bat (no joke). Anyway, here's the songs on the compilation: 1. Mark Knopfler - Border Reiver: Kicking things off with a track from the former Dire Straits frontman's 2009 album. This was the song that he opened his set with when I saw him live last year, so I thought it would be a great start to the compilation. 2. Tiny Dancers - Ashes and Diamonds: Tiny Dancers are one of the most underrated bands of the mid 00s indie scene. They had two top 40 singles and one brilliant album (Free School Milk, which tragically only got to #67) before calling it a day. This was released as the 3rd single from the album, but came nowhere near charting. It's definately one of the more mellow tracks on the album, the rest is very much upbeat. 3. Withered Hand - No Cigarettes: Nothing I can really add to this. It is what it is. 4. Augustana - Boston: I fell in love with a girl in America when she played this song for me on the piano. I downloaded the song that very moment, and every time I play it it reminds me of her. Unfortunately I had to leave to go back home, but we left as the best of friends. This song will remind me of the great times we had for many years to come. 5. The Hold Steady - Atlantic City: This is a cover version of the Bruce Springsteen song (although the vocalist is very similar to the Boss). The version on 'steens album (coincidenally called Nebraska) is just voice, guitar and harmonica, and I love this full band version of it. It's a pity it wasn't your cup of tea. 6. Gypsy & the Cat - The Piper's Song: Perhaps my favourie song of the year. I got a friend hooked on this song by saying that it's like an updated version of Toto, as well as being MGMT & Empire of the Sun-esque. 7. Dark Mean - Happy Banjo: I first played this song absent mindedly on my now defunct unsigned radio show. Whilst going through the archives a few weeks ago, I rediscovered the song and fell in love with it again. 8. Tim Ten Yen - Girl Number One: I adore this song enormously, I'm glad you enjoyed it as much as I did. It is very Divine Comedy-esque come to think of it, although on a much smaller budget. 9. Maybeshewill - She Films the Clouds, Pt.2: When I saw that you had got my tracklist, I thought that this would be your 2nd least favourite track on the compilation (we'll get to the number 1 soon enough), so I'm glad to see that you like this. 10. Morning Teleportation - Expanding Anyway - I saw this band live in Nashville, and picked up their album, which was produced by the lead singer of Modest Mouse. A bit esoteric for some tastes. 11. The Lightning Seeds - My Best Day: Indeed it is the Lightning Seeds. This is taken from the marvellous (pun intended) Jollification album, and features Alison Moyet on co-lead vocals. 12. Ride - Twisterella: Ride seem to be better known to the kids for featuring a future Oasis guitarist than for their own music output. It's a shame as this song, along with Vapour Trail and Leave It All Behind are proper classics. 13. Daisy Chainsaw - Love Your Money: Brett Anderson wrote a song about their vocalist. 14. Mazes - Most Days - A short piece of punk-pop that was all over 6music in February. Very much in the Vaccines mould (in fact, I wouldn't be surprised if they had supported the band) 15. Cashier No.9: When Jackie Shone - I entered another song into the UP contest a few months ago, coming 3rd from last; I just don't think this board will ever warm to them! They're a Belfast band, and they signed to Bella Union a few weeks back, and neither this nor 42 West Avenue will be on their debut album. Perhaps there's a reason for that... 16. The Fresh and Onlys - Waterfall: Not a Stone Roses cover. 17. Skindred - Rat Race: I though you would despise this song. I was right. I really got into this reggae-metal band recently, despite not being much of a metal fan (Lacuna Coil and Iron Maiden aside). Obviously a very niche thing. 18. Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros - 40 Day Dream: The chorus always has me in tears, it's a very wonderful song. 19. Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds - Into My Arms: I thought this song would be a great closer. It's my former guitar teacher's favourite song (quite ironic, given that there's no guitar on the record). BONUS. Etsuko Yakushimaru - Venus To Jesus: This didn't really fit onto the compilation anywhere, but I wanted include it so I made it a bonus track. It's the theme song to an anime that I'm rather fond of 'Arakawa Under the Bridge', which prompted its inclusion. The chorus is gorgeous and sugar-y. It's not my normal cup of tea, but the song really gets to me. I'm glad you liked a few songs on the compilation. I had a feeling you wouldn't like everything, but as long as there's a few songs you like then it's been a job well done. On a side note, this is the first CDSWAP compilation I've made that hasn't featured The Cure, Suede or Teenage Fanclub on it, so I'm rather proud of myself. Glad it was yours as I thought, and yep I got the Alice Deejay reference there (one of my all time favourite albums/acts though - how ironic :(). Thanks for the track info, I shall rename all of the tracks on my iTunes! Wow at The Hold Steady, it really genuinely did sound like Bruce Springsteen, at least I was halfway there - I've never heard Atlantic City before! Gypsy & The Cat are an act whose name I've heard but music I hadn't, so I'll definitely check them out further on the basis of that song. Pretty sure I saw Tiny Dancers live once, if it's the band that I'm thinking of that supported Sandi Thom in 2006 - very flamboyant frontman and for a support band, it was like a main act - the stage was littered with props (tiger rug, lampshade and some other bits and pieces). Decent compilation, definitely something for most tastes in there I'd have said, and being so diverse, the chances of me liking every single song were pretty slim, but even so, I only actively disliked 2 or 3 songs. And I've definitely made some decent discoveries here so merci beaucoup :D
May 22, 201114 yr The Hold Steady  Craig Finn and Bruce Springsteen have fairly similar voices and have often been compared by critics so it's hardly surprising to think one of their songs is a Springsteen song...
May 22, 201114 yr i love the hold steady's cover of atlantic city <3 though nothing trumps the original. a perfect pop song imo... Pretty much the whole of Nebraska is perfect. Fabulous album that turned me right round from hating Bruce completely.
May 22, 201114 yr Brett-Butler's compilation link forwarded to the three posters that asked for it :D

May 22, 201114 yr my review // i feel bad for getting this CD almost because i know so many of the tracks on it already. :( (i'll let the person reveal themselves even though i know who they are obviously). there were some great discoveries though! so it was worth it. ANYWAY: 01. johnny foreigner - ? / i recognize this style as them but i never really got into them (way bigger of a los campesinos fan), BUT i quite enjoy this. maybe i should give them another chance? their debut sort of struck me as a los camp! ripoff without the interesting themes of self-loathing/depression/anxiety/what have you but i'm digging this, feels very much its own rather than typical twee. 02. the drums - let's go surfing (??? remix) the drums sort of bore me despite them being fellow gays BUT this remix takes let's go surfing to a whole other level really. DIGGIN it. much more rocky/noisy/kind of perfect. 03. fang island - daisy on my CD last year actually, just as good though. fellow art school homiesss 04. track 4 wouldn't load on quictime vlc OR itunes 05. i recognize this song. i used to have it in my itunes i think. noisy and kind of anthemic but i don't really like it. maybe that danananakyord band? i dunno just NOT MY THING really but certainly not bad 06. parenthetical girls - young throats. incredible band perfect song. zac pennington is just so f***ing good, can't wait to see what he does in xiu xiu. so poppy i luv it 07. owen pallett - song song song one of my favs off he poos clouds <3 <3 <3 this is one of those songs i listen to and feel bad that i got this CD because it could be a great discovery for others, same with parenthetical girls 08. no idea what this is. fierce dancey track with this upbeat backing and it's just pretty all around GR8. the guitar bits that kick in halfway are kinda cheesy stereotypical dance $h!t but the beginning is really fabulous. LOL. So this CD was mine. I knew that you'd probably be the one who'd enjoy it the most, but also the one that would've heard the majority of it. argh. Oh well, at least you've given the praise that these songs deserve. 1. Johnny Foreigner - With Who, Who And What I've Got Yeah, quite distinctively Johnny Foreigner, taken from their 2010 EP "You Thought You Saw A Shooting Star But Yr Eyes Were Blurred With Tears And That Lighthouse Can Be Pretty Deceiving With The Sky So Clear And Sea So Calm". Oh yes. This is their best track to me, mainly because of those synths <3<3<3 82 plays later and I still can't pick up on the lyrics. It's amazing nonetheless. If you didn't enjoy Waited Up then I wouldn't reccomend trying them again though, as they're going downhill with every release. Shame </3 7 albums and 10 EPs in just six years though, there's a lot to plough through! 2. The Drums - Let's Go Surfing (The Raveonettes remix) Glad you haven't heard this particular version! The original was my anthem of summer 2009, this remix my anthem of summer 2010. So so much better and crazier. On repeat for hours the first time I heard it. Oh and this song has nothing to do with surfing, it's in fact about cottaging. 3. Fang Island - Daisy fun fun fun fun. 4. Battles - Ddiamondd Sorry that it wouldn't load! The same mp3 works for me, something must've been corrupted when I uploaded it. You've probably heard it anyway since it's one of the more well known tracks. Anyways, so much going on here from start to finish. 5. Danananananaykroyd - Pink Sabbath Not your thing? Boo! HOW did you recognise them though, since they're not particularly known and certainly not in the pitchfork / cokemachineglow / TMT / all those music blogs you visit sorta domain. This is insane and crazy and insane, having 2, sometimes 3, drummers and being Scottish is certainly a nice combination. 6. Parenthetical Girls - Young Throats He's in Xiu Xiu now?!?! omg. Agreed wholeheartedly with your description. The noisy, messed up indie rock ends HERE. 7. Owen Pallett - Song Song Song The percussion OOF. Shame my speakers really, really don't like this song. I don't think they can handle the taiko. Perhaps his most experimental song. 8. Mimicry - Heat This was entered into BJSC XVII, by SOMEONE. I love the cheese. So I'd continue this, but I have to go to work, brb 4 hours. I dunno if I'm sober yet FML.
May 22, 201114 yr Oh yeah Can I have links to both the cds reviewed so far? Me too if possible. Gonna end up with so much music from this! So I'd send you both links, but the only place it is is in the PM, which I haven't actually saved. Ben should have it though!
May 22, 201114 yr So Mainstream, It Hurts 1. A great start to the playlist, a male singer whose voice either sounds really familiar or it’s the song. Can imagine hearing it in a movie with a car driving down route 66 or something. 2. Really interested in finding out who this is cos I love this singers voice which again sounds really familiar. Like most of the songs in this playlist, not something I’d really seek out to listen to but I’m pleasantly surprised and wouldn’t mind listening to more stuff from them. 3. This is either from the 80’s or it’s just got an 80’s vibe to it. I kinda recognise it a bit but I’m not too sure where from, probably an advert? I’m glad I finally have it though in my itunes though, I’m really liking it now especially the lead up to the chorus. 4. This is one of my favourites. Again, not something I’d ever usually come across but it ticks all the boxes for me. The guys voice is wicked and the chorus is so bloody good! 5. This one took a few listens to get into it but it’s another one of my favourites now. I’m a sucker for a good chorus so again this is what sells this one to me. Will definitely be checking out their other stuff. 6. Love this into and how the song kida builds. Can imagine the instrumental for this is amazing! 7. Probably my second favourite of the lot. Yet again, the singer’s voice is so familiar but I just can’t place it. I especially like the end where the beat kicks in and there’s some kind of auto-tune thing going on? 8. Male and female vocals with a catchy as hell chorus. 9. AMAZING 10. Pretty sure this is The Offspring cos it reminds me so much of Pretty Fly for a White Guy and the guy’s got a pretty distinct voice. Can’t get enough of the way he says ‘time’. 11. I thought I knew whose CD this was until I heard this song cos I really can’t see the person I’m thinking of listening to this but I could be and probably am wrong. This is easily my favourite, I’m a sucker for a female vocal and the chorus is great. Looking forward to finding out who this is. 12. Turning Japanese! This is only song on here that I definitely know who it’s by. It’s one of those songs I’ve heard growing up but never properly listened to it. Glad it’s in my collection now though I think it’s wicked. 13. HELLO HELLOOOOOOOOOO. Got a feeling this might be paramore from this girls voice but I could be wrong cos I’ve not heard much of their stuff. Unless she’s also done solo stuff? Really like this though, it’s made me wanna give their music another chance even if it’s not them. 14. One of the only songs I probably wouldn’t listen to again. I know that it doesn’t sound anything like him, but I just get morrisey vibes from this guys voice and morrisey’s honky voice annoys the hell out of me. I also get rocky horror vibes from it. I think I might be going mental. 15. Okay well this is definitely green day but I don’t know the song, I’ve only heard the stuff from amerian idiot. I definitely like it though, especially that bit at the end. 16. Another song I’ve heard but can’t place the name of or who sings it. Really enjoyed it though and I love the sax breakdown near the end. Picturing whoever sings it to look like Siouxsie Soux. 17. I get major The Beautiful South vibes from this. I can’t work out if it’s a man and woman singing at the same time or not. Whoever it is I really like it though, the chorus especially (once again) 18. This song reminds me of another song much it’s really bugging me! Only for like 3 seconds from 27 seconds in but I swear there’s another song with a really similar sound to that and it’s gonna kill me if I don’t find out which one :( (love the song btw!) 19. hahaaa I watched this movie recently and even though I wasn’t overly keen on it I did love this scene! Couldn’t stop laughing when this came on :P 20. Kinda wish this was longer! The guy’s got a heavy metal kinda voice that reminds me of disturbed and I was just getting into it when it ended. Is this the full version of it to whoevers playlist this is? Sorry if the reivews for each song are a bit short but I find it hard trying to think of things to say about songs in general. I am really interested to see who a lot of these songs are by though so I can explore their discographies.

Can imagine hearing it in a movie with a car driving down route 66 or something. Yep, no wonder you recognised it. My mum's all-time favourite song, I got into it more recently because I was told to learn it by my drum teacher. From the album "Born To Run", which I'd fully recommend if you liked this. 2. Really interested in finding out who this is cos I love this singers voice which again sounds really familiar. Like most of the songs in this playlist, not something I’d really seek out to listen to but I’m pleasantly surprised and wouldn’t mind listening to more stuff from them. You'll have probably heard at least one Incubus song even if you didn't realise you had - this was a MASSIVE radio hit about ten years ago in the US, it's such a shame they never got that much success over here. 3. This is either from the 80’s or it’s just got an 80’s vibe to it. I kinda recognise it a bit but I’m not too sure where from, probably an advert? I’m glad I finally have it though in my itunes though, I’m really liking it now especially the lead up to the chorus. From the soundtrack of one of my all-time favourite films :D 4. This is one of my favourites. Again, not something I’d ever usually come across but it ticks all the boxes for me. The guys voice is wicked and the chorus is so bloody good! Took me a while to get into this but when it clicks, it's just pure awesomeness. 5. This one took a few listens to get into it but it’s another one of my favourites now. I’m a sucker for a good chorus so again this is what sells this one to me. Will definitely be checking out their other stuff. I got this from a CD Swap on ChC, I've listened to some more Alkaline Trio since but nothing compares to this. I love the lyrics ^_^ 6. Love this into and how the song kida builds. Can imagine the instrumental for this is amazing! Another more low-key song, glad you liked it though ^_^ 7. Probably my second favourite of the lot. Yet again, the singer’s voice is so familiar but I just can’t place it. I especially like the end where the beat kicks in and there’s some kind of auto-tune thing going on? Another big radio hit across the pond, the Black Keys have been threatening to make a serious breakthrough for a while and this should have been the song to do it, imo. Love how it's kinda bluesy. 8. Male and female vocals with a catchy as hell chorus. You'll probably know The Kills, this was only an album track but it's by far my favourite of theirs. 9. AMAZING From one of the best TV shows of the last decade. The last series of Ashes to Ashes finished almost exactly a year ago :o 10. Pretty sure this is The Offspring cos it reminds me so much of Pretty Fly for a White Guy and the guy’s got a pretty distinct voice. Can’t get enough of the way he says ‘time’. It is! It was the introductory single from their breakthrough Smash, which I think is still the biggest-selling independent record of all time in the US with over 8 million copies sold. 11. I thought I knew whose CD this was until I heard this song cos I really can’t see the person I’m thinking of listening to this but I could be and probably am wrong. This is easily my favourite, I’m a sucker for a female vocal and the chorus is great. Looking forward to finding out who this is. This just clicked with me as soon as I heard it, not usually the kind of thing I go for either which may have thrown you off if you already thought this was my playlist  12. Turning Japanese! This is only song on here that I definitely know who it’s by. It’s one of those songs I’ve heard growing up but never properly listened to it. Glad it’s in my collection now though I think it’s wicked. Tis a classic, and probably the best-known song here. It is Paramore. It's an early demo that was inexplicably left off their debut album even though it's up there with the best they've done. Check out "When It Rains" off Riot! if you liked this, it's probably the closest in sound they've come to it. Or "Decode", but I'm assuming you've heard that. 14. One of the only songs I probably wouldn’t listen to again. I know that it doesn’t sound anything like him, but I just get morrisey vibes from this guys voice and morrisey’s honky voice annoys the hell out of me. I also get rocky horror vibes from it. I think I might be going mental. This was the last song I put on the compilation, it's not a massive favourite of mine but I do like it. 15. Okay well this is definitely green day but I don’t know the song, I’ve only heard the stuff from amerian idiot. I definitely like it though, especially that bit at the end. Wouldn't expect you to know it, it was on the soundtrack for the film Angus and they recorded it in '95 after Dookie had exploded. Another hidden gem similar to "Hello, Hello", especially given nothing they recorded between this and "American Idiot" was of this standard imo. 16. Another song I’ve heard but can’t place the name of or who sings it. Really enjoyed it though and I love the sax breakdown near the end. Picturing whoever sings it to look like Siouxsie Soux. This is reportedly the "35th Greatest Canadian Song Ever"! Was a #10 hit over here in 1980, and I'm afraid to say I have no idea what Martha looks like :( 17. I get major The Beautiful South vibes from this. I can’t work out if it’s a man and woman singing at the same time or not. Whoever it is I really like it though, the chorus especially (once again) Absolutely gorgeous song from another hyped-up band. Not much more to say really. 18. This song reminds me of another song much it’s really bugging me! Only for like 3 seconds from 27 seconds in but I swear there’s another song with a really similar sound to that and it’s gonna kill me if I don’t find out which one :( (love the song btw!) Absolute classic, good to see it getting some love :D 19. hahaaa I watched this movie recently and even though I wasn’t overly keen on it I did love this scene! Couldn’t stop laughing when this came on :P Beats even "I have HAD it, with these motherf***ing snakes, on this motherf***ing plane!" 20. Kinda wish this was longer! The guy’s got a heavy metal kinda voice that reminds me of disturbed and I was just getting into it when it ended. Is this the full version of it to whoevers playlist this is? It is the full-length song, it was a parody that's tacked on at the end of the "Fat Lip" video and was a proper album track on All Killer, No Filler as well. Ironically, the band actually ended up going down a vaguely serious metal route  Sorry if the reivews for each song are a bit short but I find it hard trying to think of things to say about songs in general. I am really interested to see who a lot of these songs are by though so I can explore their discographies. Glad you enjoyed it, I tried to make the compilation as fun as possible.
May 22, 201114 yr 5. This one took a few listens to get into it but it’s another one of my favourites now. I’m a sucker for a good chorus so again this is what sells this one to me. I love the lyrics ^_^[/b] Really? i find Private Eye a bit meh compared to a lot of tracks on FHTI (Armageddon, Take lots With Alcohol, Bloodied Up, Mr Chainsaw to name a few), and basically the whole of Godammit, infact their two of my favourite albums ever. but sometimes i start from track 2 on FHTI, Private Eye is a great track but it gets boring where as the rest of the album i could listen to forever.
