Not sure what made me think of this but I'm just curious, does anyone know what the biggest fall from a midweek Number 1 position was? i.e. the lowest a song has ended up on the Sunday when it was Number 1 in the midweeks. I know McFly have ended up at #3 or #4 a couple of times after being #1 in the mids, but there must be greater falls?

There was a week when Oasis were number one in the first midweeks but ended up outside the top ten. However, that was almost certainly down to an error in Tuesday's chart.

Was that with 'I'm Outta Time'? I thought that was #3 in the midweeks not #1, and yeah as far as I remember it was down to an error with missing iTunes data or something.

Ok it seems I stand corrected then. But as it was due to missing data, it doesn't really count!

I can't actually remember any number 1 thats had a huge fall from number 1 in the mids- in fact I think the biggest from last year was The Saturdays who were number 1 all week, and then fell to 3 on Sunday

Born This Way did the same this year

So, they've got it wrong 11 times out of 61 (62 but there was no update for W/E 08/01/2011). They're obviously likely to get it wrong again this week continuing the odd fact that generally when they get one wrong they get the next one wrong as well...

Apart from the three I've asterisked, the midweek #1s have all ended up at #2. The asterisked ones ended at #3.

What McFly song dropped to #4? I remember That Girl going 1-3 in 2004 (and Brian McFadden going up to #1) but I don't remember any of theirs going 1-4...

I honestly don't remember any midweek #1 dropping lower than #3 naturally (i.e. occuring without an error in the early midweeks). Even the Elvis re-releases that were midweek #1s in 2005 didn't do that. Only two missed the top 3 by Sunday (Return to Sender and The Wonder of You) and neither of those were #1 in the mids.

With the Love the Way You Lie/Green Light week, weren't the mid-weeks missing iTunes data that week?

Plus, Green Light was very front-loaded. There's no way it could've climbed to #1 over the week!

Yes, that was an error (or we think so anyway). But R1 still broadcast LTWYL as being midweek #1 so that's how I'm keeping it... :P

Yeah I remember That Girl going from 1-3 and the other one I was thinking of was I Wanna Hold You but that ended up at #3 not at #4. Can't remember for definite if it was #1 in the mids though. Lies ended up at #4 but I don't think it was anywhere near #1 in the mids!

Actually, I've just remembered that in gezza76's Closest Races to Number Ones thread he said that Lisa Stansfield - People Hold On was #1 in the early midweeks the week it was released in January 1997, and it ended up at #4. I only remember it because I quoted it in surprise that she was even in with a fighting shot of #1 in 1997 of all years, several years after her commercial peak.

Perhaps gezza76 might be able to remember any that possibly dropped further if he sees this thread? :D

Nah, I Wanna Hold You wasn't midweek #1. It was released the same week as the Arctic Monkeys' debut single who were definitely #1 all week as I remember it was a bit of a shock to quite a few people that they were heading for the top of the charts as they only had a (admittedly massive) trail of hype behind them at that point, without huge support from the more mainstream media.

Elton John 'Electricity' started off as a midweek #1 in 2005 - much to the shock of many a poster on Cool Clarity at the time  - but by Sunday's chart, the track has dropped to #4 before the inevitable plummet.

Iirc, Elton John only managed to have strong first day sales due to some text promotional campaign - I believe McFly also tried this out in 2006 but in their case got to #1 with 'Star Girl'.

In 2002 Bon Jovi were #1 in the early midweeks with 'Everyday' there may well be the story I remember well that was on Dotmusic at the time. I was very excited that Bon Jovi might get their first UK No.1, but sadly by Sunday it had dropped to #5 and Pink was number 1 with Just Like A Pill. And I haven't forgiven her :D

Wow that's quite a drop, I guess sales must have been really close that week. 'Everyday' was a pretty weak single actually, i'm shocked it was #1 in the mids. If any Bon Jovi song should have been #1, it's 'It's My Life'!

Actually I still remember the shock of Pink being #1 that week cos I remember it just went to #1 completely out of nowhere, no-one expected it at all. To this day it remains my favourite Pink song :D

I think the Bon Jovi is the biggest one i'm aware of but i'll double check

Pink 'Just Like A Pill' sold an average of 48,000 in its first week of release - much less than quite of the #1 singles from earlier in 2002.

It was released the same week as not just Bon Jovi 'Everyday' but also the dreadful 'What I Go To School For' by Busted which I was convinced was going to be #1 that Sunday. I'm just happy that Pink got there as it was easily the best of the new releases that week.

Ah, found it :P

(snip!)

They didn't 'get it wrong' on any of these occasions. The situation changed. The chart is a sales report, not a prediction competition.
