I finally got round to listening to the Hounds of Love yesterday and I was completely blown away, The Ninth Wave section in particular was an exhilarating listen. I also gave The Dreaming a couple of spins, and I loved it equally as much on first listen. I didn't find it too aloof at all, rather the quirkiness is what I liked most about it, in particular Get Out of My House and Pull Out the Pin. It seems odd that the The Dreaming was deemed esoteric at the time while THL was praised for the exact same qualities that were previously chastised. I guess the first section with the big singles helped balance things out but still.

I would rate it like this after three listens of HOL and two of TD

Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God) 10

Hounds of Love 10

The Big Sky 10

Mother Stands for Comfort 7

Cloudbusting 10

And Dream of Sheep 9

Under Ice 10

Waking the Witch 10

Watching You Without Me 8

Jig of Life 10

Hello Earth 9

The Morning Fog 8

Sat In Your Lap 9

There Goes a Tenner 8

Pull Out the Pin 10

Suspended In Gaffa 10

Leaving It Open 8

The Dreaming 10

Night of the Swallow 10

All the Love 7

Houdini 8

Get Out of My House 10

I'm about to download Never for Ever, I already know and love Violin, Army Dreamers and of course Babooshka, so it's a good entry point. I've just had the inspiration to check out my mum's vinyl collection, I've picked out some Peter Gabriel so far which is another artist I wanted to check out, and I'm going to play it later. Sadly, my mum wasn't a Kate Bush fan but she said she may have a single somewhere. I'm going to check out my dad's stash at some point to see if I have any better luck there.

So many great albums from Kate, but i find a Best Of is a good start. The Whole Story has all the big ones from 78-86.

1989's The Sensual World is worth getting too.

Peter Gabriel is a musical genius. I would suggest that you start at the beginning of his solo career and work your way through. Then go back and listen to the Gabriel era Genesis albums although you will need to be prepared for some pretty weird stuff. The immediate post-Gabriel Genesis albums were good as well but they ended up as Phil Collins' backing band :(

very true..... his early solo material is jaw-droppingly excellent... and let's not forget him and Kate's Games Without Frontiers..... which still gives me goosebumps even after all this time.

It's so refreshing to see a younger music fan like Daniel who's prepared to actually dig around for old music..... I thought in this disposable download only-now-is-important age, this kind of behavious had all but vanished. Thank God it hasn't. When I was growing up, my main musical joy was burrowing round and finding the origins of the current music I loved..... it opens your ears to a whole new arena.

Never For Ever is one that most Bush fans barely mention...... strange considering it includes some of her finest work. I'm not keen on Babooshka, maybe I've heard it one too many times, but Breathing is phenomenal. The one I always love on NFE is Infant Kiss - if this song had been written today, Kate would've been hung, drawn and quartered by the tabloids...... it's such a brave and interesting take on the usually untouchable child abuse topic.

The album I think is unfairly slagged off is Lionheart.... yes, it was rushed and some of the tracks could've been worked on a bit more..... but there's some fabulous moments on there, too.

I have always thought this, seriously under-rated. If anybody else had released it, it would be acclaimed as a work of genius.

Agreed..... I actually prefer it to Kick Inside, and it's definitely a better album than Red Shoes or Director's Cut.

Talking of which...... here's my KB album rate.....

Kick Inside - 6

Lionheart - 8

Never For Ever - 8

The Dreaming - 10

Hounds of Love - 10

The Sensual World - 8

Red Shoes - 5

Aerial - 8

Director's Cut - 3

50 Words For Snow - 8

I'm a newcomer I really love Running Up That Hill I've downloaded it. Would The Whole Story album be worth a look or Hounds Of Love first ?.
The first thing I started with Kate-wise was The Whole Story and then my love just grew from there. My favourite album of hers changes a lot actually, right now I'd say The Dreaming.

Go for The Whole Story. Then you can decide whether you have a preference for songs from a particular album. I hope you eventually decide to buy all her albums :D

I don't wish to be patronising but I think it's great that a 15 year old loves The Dreaming. When I was that age I wouldn't have been able to appreciate it.

Love Kate Bush big time. Amazing voice, amazing songs. Cloudbusting is my all time favourite of hers. Great video too.
