Posted May 22, 201114 yr As the title says, what songs that were successful in America do you wish had more success here in the UK chart? Here are mine: Danity Kane - Damaged (peaked at #10 on BH100 yet failed to go top 40 over here) P8IBg0mVJ5Y Cherish - Killa (went top 40 on BH100 yet failed to become a hit in the UK) 9K1Z91gf0sw Natasha Bedingfield - Pocketful of Sunshine (top 5 hit on BH100 yet never released over here) gte3BoXKwP0 Heart - What About Love? (I think it was a #1 hit on BH100 [correct me if I'm wrong] yet only went to #14 in the UK) KE5GGMhmo-M
May 22, 201114 yr Incubus - Drive. Huge radio hit in the US, eventually peaked at #9 about 18 months after its parent album was released but only limped to #40 over here.
May 22, 201114 yr Wiz Khalifa - Black And Yellow. I know it was a hit in the UK but #5 was ridiculously low for it and it's not sold that much overall. Roll Up is also not doing very well (although it's not doing that well in the USA either, only top 20-ish there) :( Oh and Lupe Fiasco - The Show Goes On as well. Edited May 22, 201114 yr by Bray

May 22, 201114 yr For me a massive one is Whatever You Like by T.I. I was a big fan of T.I. in general at the time (see: Live Your Life), and it was a shame that such a brilliant song could be so big in the US, yet flop in the UK. I know it's a different country, but seriously, does nobody here use the Internet? Also, another big one was Imma Be by the Black Eyed Peas from last year, being #1 in the US, yet completely missing the top 40 in the UK!!! I'm still baffled by this tbh, because Imma Be got well promoted here too. Not amazingly well, but I heard it on the radio a lot, saw it on MTV a lot, lots of buzz (npi) about it on the Internet, very catchy song. Why couldn't it even get just one week top 40? Always baffled me. Even right now, there's a few songs which have been absolutely massive hits at the moment in the US, but flops in comparison in the UK, like Till the World Ends, Down On Me and Look At Me Now. We should do Europe hits here aswell, because I have a few of those which were massive in Europe and flopped here, which really pissed me off last year. Particularly the likes of Waka Waka, Alors on danse and Satellite. :( Edited May 22, 201114 yr by Eric_Blob
May 22, 201114 yr Danity Kane's Damaged should so be deserved in the top 10. Can't believe it flopped in the UK :(
May 22, 201114 yr All-American Rejects - Gives You Hell. #4 in the US, made it onto the best-sellers list of 2009, got to #18 over here. Amazing song. :(
May 22, 201114 yr I know it technically was a minor hit, but I thought Good Girls Gone Bad by Cobra Starship should've charted much higher than it did :( oh and Gives You Hell as well, I loved that :( Edited May 22, 201114 yr by chart wizard
May 22, 201114 yr I know it technically was a minor hit, but I thought Good Girls Gone Bad by Cobra Starship should've charted much higher than it did :( oh and Gives You Hell as well, I loved that :( Both of these, but "Dirty Little Secret" is a better AAR track.
May 22, 201114 yr Didn't the Glee Cast version of Gives You Hell actually peak higher than the original too!? :o But I agree, it's a great song, and that was full-on massive in the US.
May 22, 201114 yr I've been always bummed that Enrique Iglesias's "Be with you" was never released in the UK, though it was a US #1 and a hit pretty much everywhere else. It was all because the dire "Rhythm divine" bombed, and in the UK they decided that he would be a one-hit wonder, nevermind that "Be with you" was a massive tune, that he was becoming a huge star in the US, like he had already been for some years in Spain, Portugal, Italy and Latin America. Luckily for him, "Hero" turned the tables around in the UK.
May 22, 201114 yr MIMS 'This Is Why I'm Hot' - this had massive potential and was no.1 in the US yet only scraped top 20 here All American Rejects 'Gives You Hell' - loved this song And some from today... Jeremih ft 50 cent 'Down on Me' - its sold well for a no.30 single but it should have done better Chris Brown ft Busta rhymes and Lil wayne 'Look at Me Now' - this could have been Chris' third single but I think it's confirmed 'She Isnt You' or something. This could have been T10 if promoted properly There's more but I can't think right now.
May 22, 201114 yr Lady Antebellum - Need You Now should have been a bigger hit here. It didnt even reach the top 20 :(
May 22, 201114 yr Enrique Iglesias - Be With You // This is the first one to come to mind. This song would've been a big hit in the UK, dance-pop was at its peak in 2000, this would've been top10 for sure. Jewel - You Were Meant For Me / Foolish Games / Hands // Three Hot 100 top10 hits that definitely deserved to do much better in the UK. She never did well in the UK which is a shame. Faith Hill - Breathe // Reached #2 in Hot 100, and is the #1 hit of 2000 in the US. In the UK, it was released twice in 2000 and 2001 but never did much both times. Enya - Only Time // Reached the top10 in the US, and was a actually a hit in Europe, but failed to do anything big in the UK. Christina Aguilera - I Turn To You // Top3 in the US, scraped the top20 in the UK. This is her best ballad, dunno what went wrong... Dream - He Loves U Not // A-list on Radio 1, had all the ingredients to be a big pop smash, and barely made the top20. Top3 in the US. Willa Ford - I Wanna Be Bad // Surprised this was never released in the UK, it was nawtee... Matchbox 20 - Bent // Another US number 1 hit that failed to make the top75 in the UK. Vertical Horizon - Everything You Want // Failed to be a UK hit, but ticked all the right boxes to become a #1 US smash. Deborah Cox - Nobody's Supposed To Be Here // Great R&B song that had a very popular dance remix that helped it become a #2 smash in the US, yet it flew by the UK... Whitney Houston, Kelly Price, Faith Evans - Heartbreak Hotel // Big US #2 hit, 3 vocal divas, Whitney was on fire during this album, and yet this was a semi-flop in the UK. Ricky Martin - She's All I Ever Had // Decent ballad that reached #2 in the US, yet failed to chart in the UK. La Bouche - Be My Lover & Sweet Dreams // Two big US top10 hits, two huge European hits, yet failed to become classics of eurodance in the UK. It's uber rare for dance songs to do better in the US, and considering how big they were in Europe too, it just baffles me even more. Joe - I Wanna Know // Brilliant R&B ballad, scraped the top40 in the UK. 98º - Because Of You // Decent boyband ballad that didn't appeal to UK record buying public. Maybe there were too many of them back then... 702 - Where My Girls At // Didn't doo too badly in the UK, but deserved to do better. Nicole Wray & Missy Elliott - Make It Hot // Great midtempo R&B track, with the hot Timbaland beats from the late 90s. Surprised it wasnt bigger, but RnB was not as big as it is nowadays Marc Anthony - I Need To Know // Big latin-pop hit in the US and Europe, but seemed to skip the UK... Brian McKnight - Back At One // R&B ballads were all the rage in the US at the time, this one didnt chart in the UK. Nine Days - Absolutely (Story Of A Girl) // This was the kind of upbeat rock songs that I did enjoy at the time. Tamia - So Into You & Stranger In My House // Her first hit is probably one of the best RnB songs of the 90s, the latter is her biggest US hit from 2001, and has a great remix by Hex Hector too. Michelle Branch - All You Wanted // Her biggest US hit, reaching #6. This was a great pop-rock song and I'm surprised it flopped in the UK, this kinda music was pretty big at the time with Pink and Avril ruling the charts.
May 22, 201114 yr Faith Hill - Breathe // Reached #2 in Hot 100, and is the #1 hit of 2000 in the US. In the UK, it was released twice in 2000 and 2001 but never did much both times. Tamia - So Into You & Stranger In My House // Her first hit is probably one of the best RnB songs of the 90s, the latter is her biggest US hit from 2001, and has a great remix by Hex Hector too. Great choices!! Especially Whitney Houston, Nicole and Brian McKnight. And it's good to see at least someone remembers songs pre-2009  Yeah, the thing that annoys me about the R&B songs at the time is that only the absolute cream of the crop (Brandy & Monica, TLC, etc) could be hits here around 1998/1999. It's a shame as some really good songs didn't get the positions they deserve, whilst a few years later total crap managed to get so high. I guess it happens with every genre in relation to chart trends, but it's still very irritating. Although R&B ballads were never and never really have been popular here off their own back. I think the problem with Heartbreak Hotel was that it was ridiculously old by the time it was released here, being on her album from the year before, obviously. And it was released as promotion for her Greatest Hits album here, so I guess people who heard the song and liked it went and bought that instead, where they could also get several of her classic hits for their money (it was a fairly big Christmas seller that year). It was also released during Xmas = bad time to release. La Bouche is probably the most bizarre flop here I've ever seen. Really never understood that one for all the reasons you've said. The only theory I thought of is there were perhaps too many dance songs at the time but looking at the charts the week it was released I don't think that's really the case from what I can tell. Baffling, really. I would have picked 3 Doors Down - Kryptonite over Matchbox 20 and Vertical Horizon. Not a fan of that kind of US rock but it was a good tune and failed to chart here (but got to #3 in the US). Might add my own to this topic when I actually can be bothered to think and cross-reference these things (aka not now) Edited May 22, 201114 yr by superbossanova
May 22, 201114 yr I would have picked 3 Doors Down - Kryptonite Love this tune so much. Completely forgot about it. Not sure what happened with it not charting over here, whether it wasn't released or just flopped, but it really should have been a hit. I'm not lying when I say that this is one of the tunes that got me into music in the first place.
May 22, 201114 yr All-American Rejects - Gives You Hell. #4 in the US, made it onto the best-sellers list of 2009, got to #18 over here. Amazing song. :( was it that big in the us??must be why radio 1 continue to play it daily!!
