Bo Rap: stopped You Sexy Thing (3 weeks), Trail Of The Lonesome Pine (2 weeks), I Believe In father Christmas (2 weeks), Glass Of Champagne (2 weeks), When You Tell Me That You Love Me (1 week and thank goodness for that), Justified And Ancient (2 weeks) and Everybody In The Place (1 week) all getting to number one. Covering records that originated/charted in the 30's, 70's, 80's, 90's, 00's.

Personally I'd have preferred a shorter run at the top, just covering 2 of Hot Chocs weeks, Laurel & hardy's 2, Diana Ross & The Prodigy's run....

I'd much rather listen to Greg lake, Sailor, KLF any day.... B-)

I actually loved the Diana Ross track and Tammy Wynette is my fave singer of all time so loved Justified And Ancient and wish it had been a No.1. :(

I was never a fan of Tammy Wynette but Justified And Ancient is a fantastic song.

Not a great show this week.

The chart accompanied by the utterly appalling Chaka “Chick-up” Khan.

Rocky Sharpe and the Replays with some good old-fashioned doo-wop. We used to get a song like this in the chart every few years. Time for another methinks.

Sally Oldfield not trying to capitalise on her brother’s success at all. Not even a bit. It might reflect badly on her. Quite why she is wearing a nightie, I have no idea. Maybe she only looks in the mirror when so dressed.

Another airing for Paul Evans’ death record. Hankies out. Younger viewers tonight may have required some words of explanation. Separate homes? No mobile? What is a telephone answering machine?

Bonnie Tyler with a song that was not a hit. She repeated the trick when she entered Eurovision.

Driver 67 with some nonsense. Lots of cars involved tonight but we are some months away from the Gary Numan song. If only Joanie had used that cab firm she might still be alive today.

Apparently Doll were cut from the short version. Their song was a hit but it doesn’t ring any bells. Maybe it will when I see the full length version.

The Shadows were doing instrumentals of current songs by this time so we get Don’t Cry For Me Argentina, the third time the tune had charted in a year or so (including Oh What A Circus). Bring back Julie Covington.

Legs & Co do Funkadelic. Not sure why they bothered.

Steve Allan with Together We Are Beautiful. This version reached the dizzy heights of number 67. Just a year later he could only watch in envy as Fern Kinney took the same song all the way to number one. Neither singer ever had another hit in the UK so perhaps singers will avoid the song in future. If we’re lucky.

And Village People are still number one.

Finally, Billy Joel over the credits. One of the better songs of the night.

I watched this with my mum. She approved of Sally Oldfield's dress. She did not like what Legs & Co were wearing. Apparently she had the same hairstyle as Bonnie Tyler during this period, but did not like the song. Her favourites were Rocky Sharpe & Paul Evans (which she still knew every word of).

So I'm guessing I get my music taste from my dad then.

At least I could only remember the chorus of Hello This Is Joanie  Rocky Sharpe and the Replays were OK but Darts did it far better. "Rocky Sharpe" was previously in a band with Den Hegarty and Rita Ray so it's clear which subsequent band got the better deal.

Will this be shown more often this yr with less Saville shows?
Unless someone else gets arrested then the answer should be Yes!

That is mildly amusing, mind boggles though about who may be next to be nicked by the boys in blue.

Judging by one of the current trials any celebrity that ever touched another human being during the 70's could end up in a costly court case! Presumably it's only worth bringing them to court if they are famous..

Top Of The Pops though, A Doll was a new wave power pop goodie and shouldn't have been cut. Rocky Sharpe is fun, but Chaka and Funkadelic are soul funk classics, much revered, Sally Oldfield was a charming ballad, Paul Evans was an oddly mildly pleasant ditty on an unpleasant subject and any of the others could have been cut in favour of the far more "1979" A Doll. Boo! Top 10 in my charts of the time, the only charts that count....

Paul Evans - just been searching this guy, he is a serious hitmaker has written hits When (Kalin Twins, Showaddywaddy), Johnny Will (Pat Boone) Roses Are Red (Bobby Vinton -US#1) Lets Pretend (Lulu) aswell as writing many songs for Elvis Presley. He also recorded hits in the early 60's too. Also the producer of his hit This Is Joannie was Jimmy Wisner - had a hit in 1961 as Kokomo with Asia Minor, has arranged many hits and most notably wrote Dont Throw Your Love Away #1 for The Searchers.
Legs & Co were a bit revealing for the BBC considering it was 1979! :o

They had to up their gain after Hot Gossip made them look like Pan's Grannies!
