June 29, 201114 yr I thought Drake's 69 line was quite clever, actually. It's far from being the trashiest line I've ever heard. 'That's why you take me, way past the point of turning me on' line, and the lines before and after it, are both wonderful lyrics. It isn't my favourite Rihanna song, but it has some nice moments like that. ETA: Eric explained it a bit better than I could. I now look on that whole song with a new meaning. And the 69/8 line, you have to look at the lines before aswell. Drake says flirtingly he's been hearing rumours (through word of mouth), that Rihanna is good with her soft lips/mouth (i.e. good at giving oral). The bit you described is the orgasm bit. Drake has taken her "way past the point of turning her on". She then goes on to say "You're about to break me". They've reached the "climax" at that point. And fittingly the song ends shortly afterwards. Rihanna also says things like "Back and forth you rock me", "Let's explore your talent" and "And every door you enter, I will let you in" (read: you can penetrate me now).

I guess that means I like the orgasm. :kink:

June 29, 201114 yr Eric's analysis (lol 'anal') of What's My Name? has completely BLOWN MY MIND (lol 'blow'). Although I don't think the 8/ate thing was intentional.
June 29, 201114 yr Eric's analysis (lol 'anal') of What's My Name? has completely BLOWN MY MIND (lol 'blow'). Although I don't think the 8/ate thing was intentional. lol. Maybe I'm looking too much into that line. It could be intentional though, since I think Drake has done similar wordplay in other songs (although they're a bit less complicated I suppose, since he doesn't have to work around a maths equation at the same time ). I guess we'll never know, unless he gets asked about it in an interview or something. I thought of another bit aswell. When Drake says "There's nothing on but the radio-ooooooh", that's including clothes (i.e. they're naked).
June 29, 201114 yr I thought of another bit aswell. When Drake says "There's nothing on but the radio-ooooooh", that's including clothes (i.e. they're naked). That was a bit obvious. What else could that line possibly mean? (Also you got the lyric wrong - I thought you said you liked this song?)
June 30, 201114 yr That was a bit obvious. What else could that line possibly mean? (Also you got the lyric wrong - I thought you said you liked this song?) The line could've meant that the radio was playing, but every other electrical device (i.e. the lights, the TV, etc.) were turned off. That's what I assumed at first. Me and my innocent mind.
June 30, 201114 yr Results? Is Daniel on holidays? Sat 25 June - Individual Round (I am purposely leaving the 2010 + 2011 round till' last so that any recent number 2s don't miss out) Fri 01 July - Wildcard Round (yes I know it should start on the Monday but I'll be on a trip to Sicily from 26 - 30 June and obviously won't have internet connection)
June 30, 201114 yr You like Only Girl, and hate What's My Name? and Rude Boy? So basically you like pop music, but not RnB music? That's fair enough, but I find it very easy to understand why people like What's My Name? The instrumental is orgasmic. I was listening to it earlier today actually. And I'm not one for lyrics, but the lyrics in What's My Name? are so intelligent imo. I like Rude Boy too (although not enough for me to give it any points in this poll, but that goes back to the fact that Rihanna fans don't just automatically rate her highest in absolutely everything, and when they do, it's because it genuinely is their favourite, which is why they're fans in the first place (and this applies to the fanbase of pretty much every single artist tbh)). What's My Name? actually flopped in a lot of countries, so clearly Rihanna can't just put her name to a song and make a music video and get a hit, or else why couldn't it chart in the top 10 in all those countries? Just to reiterate I wasn't talking about the members rating in this game regarding Rihanna but her chart success. Of course every artist has a fanbase which will give a new single a certain amount of success depending on the size of that fanbase, the quality of the song is immaterial. But there have been certain artists throughout the sands of time who are given more exposure as if to manipulate the youngsters (who always form the vast majority of the record buying public). Rihanna is currently one of those artists along with Lady GaGa. Yes I would agree that I prefer Rihanna's more 'pop' kind of material..........but what is classed as 'pop' nowadays and what is RnB? Her music is generally a combination of both IMO. How would you class 'Russian Roulette'. This is one of her songs I like but is generally criticized by her fans but yet it still got to No.2. Would it have for an unknown artist? No. Your explanation of the lyrics to 'What's My Name' certainly does give the song a different perspective for me, and if your interpretation is correct it does kind of have clever lyrics.......doesn't make it a good song. Just as there has been a number of songs over time with crap lyrics but have still been good songs. Unfortunately I can't get past the annoyingly repeatitive 'ooh na na, What's My Name' lyric without wanting to put my fist through the speakers. Again if this has been a song by an unknown featuring Drake I do not believe it would have been a hit. This is the point I am making. I think the chorus of 'Rude Boy' is also what gives that song it's annoying edge. Of course time will come when Rihanna will not get the same exposure and her songs chart success will start to wain.
June 30, 201114 yr It's fine if you don't like What's My Name? I'm just saying, I love it. And I agree with you that lyrics aren't important tbh. It's always primarily about the beat for me, and I think What's My Name? more than delivers in terms of a good instrumental!! I think Rihanna's climb to fame was more natural. She started off moderately successful with her first single. At the time of her first single, I don't think anybody thought she'd become as big as she was. I know I didn't really care for her at the time. However, with Lady Gaga she was already getting called "Queen of pop" after the release of her 2nd single, so I don't think this is a fair comparison. One was already basically the biggest pop star in the world before she even managed to chart in the UK. Remember, even Rihanna had a couple of singles that missed the top 40 in 2010 (ironically also the year that some might consider her biggest, along with 2007/2008). Even she can't just release a music video and get a hit. The song needs to be liked by people, and needs to be promoted well.
