Only because they desperately had to drop the price by almost half to stop it being out of the top 100 by now, and also, sales are more important and if it was held back, then the sales would have been bigger, as they have missed the weeks in which they do best and get the highest sales because of OA/OS. Even if 'Nortorious' was out of the top 40 by now if held back, the sales would have been undoubtably bigger, it would have had bigger airplay and they would be making more money out of it as they wouldn't have to nearly half the price.

Which proves my original point and why people bring up America. UK record labels don't know how to market OA/OS releases so the minute the see them falling they resort to drastic tactics. There was always going to be a transitional period whilst people got used to how to use it effectively, but it appears that after 4 months and only a handful of releases UK acts have given up on it completely.

It's not as if it can't be a success, it just has to be done right. It wasn't that long ago that 'On The Floor' was the only song in the top 10 that was a held back release.

Of the top 20 singles of the year so far....

5 OA/OS (LMFAO, Pitbull, Gaga, Snoop, CB-Y3)

7 post album release singles (so the same principle as OA/OS) (Adele-SLY, Rihanna, Bruno-TLS, CB-BP, Aloe, Katy/Kanye, BEPs)

1 from 2010 (Jessie-DILAD)

4 that crossed over from before OA/OS started (Jessie-PT, Bruno-G, Adele-RITD, Chipmunk)

3 held back singles (JLO, Nicole, Example)

And notice that the only OA/OS entries are American. And the biggest example of it working is with American artists WITHOUT massive UK fanbases, like LMFAO. Look at Gaga with 'Judas', it didn't work on OA/OS because of her massive fanbase, along with Britney ect.

Seeing that there's a fake version of 'Skyscraper' in the top 300, hopefully Demi's label will have enough sense to release the song to iTunes this Sunday.

Yes, I do. That's why I've been saying that it can work and the Americans prove it! But is it surprising either of those songs weren't successes? All I remember reading in January from Britney fans about how badly the release was handled. It's a rare example of an American release using OA/OS and having completely the wrong strategy. The general consensus regarding 'Judas' is that it's no where near what Lady GaGa is capable of, no where near her best work, I don't think it would've been very successful however it was released. Same with 'Run The World'. It didn't fail because it was OA/OS, it failed because it's the most commercially unappealing track Beyonce has ever released. Holding it back for 5 weeks wasn't going to change the outcome.

I agree with RabbitFurCoat, that on air, on sale CAN work. Even in 2008-2010 it's worked very well with some songs, and also post-album tracks (where it's a similar thing, for example, in our current chart, Till I'm Gone and Champagne Showers, it practically makes no difference whether they're from an album or not).

But most of the songs it's worked well with in recent years have been American songs. So it can work, but it simply doesn't for British artists usually. It could take a long time to adapt, and if we went for months without a British artist at #1, I could see people complaining. I'm not sure if the public could make the sacrifice of a couple of US dominated years (moreso than now) before the British artists start to have success again.

People bring up Judas for Lady Gaga, but those people seem to forget that Poker Face, Bad Romance and Telephone were basically on air, on sale. And also they forget that all of her songs have been on air, on sale in every country in the world. Poker Face got to #1 nearly everywhere where it was on air, on sale, so I don't think that explains how Judas didn't get #1 anywhere. Lady Gaga is one of the artists who seems to thrive off on air, on sale. Just Dance had a 6 month climb to #1 in the US I believe!!

The reason why OA/OS hasn't worked for British acts is because the record companies clearly don't like the idea of OA/OS. This is a country where not long ago the most important thing in the UK charts was getting a new entry at #1 - it seems most record companies are still using this logic.

So yes, grab that #1 smash but expect to see the track out of the top 40 within 2 months. 'Party Rock Anthem' and 'Give Me Everything' were probably the best two examples of how to market OA/OS. Release the single, then get the song to radio to increase airplay over two weeks. Then release the music video (guaranteed sales boost when this happens) et voila two tracks that benefitted from good marketing, well timed to scoring #1 and maintaining their stay at the top for 4 and 3 weeks each respectively.

Today's top 100 update

A pair of new entries close off the top 100. The album version of Magnetic Man's Anthemic, the fourth single from their début album 'Magnetic Man', makes an entry at #99. The single version features rapper P Money and is due for release in a couple of weeks. Skrillex enters at #100 with Scary Monsters And Nice Sprites, taken from the EP of the same name. Skrillex could well be the first American dubstep artist to attain chart success - all the previous perpetrators of the 'dubstep revolution' have been British. One of those British dubstep artists, DJ Fresh, re-enters at #82 with Gold Dust (feat. Ce'cile) - although this song is more drum-n-bass than dubstep. The Black Eyed Peas re-enter yet again at #92 with their decidedly not-dubstep song I Gotta Feeling while David Guetta's Who's That Chick? (feat. Rihanna) re-appears at #95 and Lady GaGa returns at #98 with the single version of The Edge Of Glory. Beyoncé, The Kooks, Florence + The Machine, Wretch 32, Selena Gomez & The Scene and Biffy Clyro each have an entry drop out to accommodate the 6 top 100 entries.

Party Rock Anthem and Give Me Everything were weird aswell. I mean, I don't think any of LMFAO, Lauren Bennett, Goonrock, Pitbull, Ne-Yo, Afrojack and Nayer have big fanbases. Their success was simply based on a combination of the songs being promoted extremely well (Party Rock Anthem has one of the best music videos I've ever seen in that respect tbh), and people liking the songs.

To be fair, I thought Give Me Everything was going to be huge at the point when it was top 10 on iTunes before Radio 1 playlisted it and without a music video!! :o

Held-back releases have bigger first week sales and are more likely to get to number 1, so a lot of record companies would be after this, longevity takes a second hand to this

OA/OS can work, it just needs to be done correctly, holding back the video/any promotional appearances too long just makes the track lose momentum

Two great dubstep songs enter next-to each other. Skrillex has over 18 million hits on YouTube - so it would be nice for it to become a hit, I love the bass in it  When the vocal mix of Anthemic is released I'm hoping for another T20 hit for Magnetic Man, they'll more likely just miss out sadly :(

Indeed. Just look at Nicola Roberts, Chipmunk and Jodie Connor. Songs people moan about failing because of OA/OS. No, they failed because they were never promoted anywhere and promo appearences and performances were very congested and so long after release. You have do it properly, release it, get onto radio and get a video out. Then it will sell. You can't just release something and expect it to sell. I've heard or seen those three tracks a combined total of about 4 or 5 tracks, whereas songs which were released properly (L.I.F.E...., Party Rock Anthem) I'd seen and heard much more when they first came out, before they'd got towards peaking.

I've just had a look at my purchase history and in the last three months I've only bought four singles from British artists, and all of them were OA/OS. Everything else I've clearly got bored of waiting and downloaded it elsewhere....

They've added vocals to 'Anthemic'? What are they like. It's a shame no one releases instrumentals any more, that was one of the highlights off Magnetic Man's album, it didn't need a vocal. :(

Yeah, the single mix features relatively unknown rapper P Money:

I quite like it, his flow is nice and I love the chorus  You gotta admit though that the song wouldn't be what it is if it weren't for the amazing instrumental

I haven't heard Anthemic, but I guess this is the only way they can try and get another hit off the album with the songs already on it. Getting Nowhere did... get nowhere, so I thought they were going to leave it.

I suspect the vocals won't be anything special, though, they rarely are when added to instrumentals as an afterthought.

ETA: Having listened to the Youtube Daniel put up, I don't think much of the vocals, and I can barely make out what the instrumental is supposed to be. Going by the single mix, easily the worst of the four Magnetic Man singles.

That's only if the song gets in the chart really early from fanbase sales though. They could've released Party Rock Anthem a year ago, and still released the music video when they did, and sent it to radio when they did, and I think the song would've been just as big. Practically nobody would've bought it without the promotion, because people aren't going to download a random song by artists they don't know.

And look at Space Bound. That was released a year ago, but that didn't get any fanbase sales because all the fanbase bought the album at the time, so it's still doing fine with a music video released 12 months after the song being put up for download.

And on the other topic, pretty much the only reason they add vocals to these dance/electronica songs is to increase the radio airplay. It's probably worth it really, since without the vocal mixes it would be much more rare you'd hear the tracks on the radio, hence they'd sell less. As long as they still have an instrumental version available I guess.

I don't think the vocals are *that* bad, but I agree the instrumental is better. I normally prefer the instrumental when vocals are grafted on for the single release though so that's not surprising.

I think the P Money version was originally intended to just be a one off live performance but it got such a good recation they did a studio version of it and are now releasing it - don't quote me on that though as I'm probably wrong.

P Money is not exactly a name likely to attract Magnetic Man any more airplay than they would have got anyway. Even if they just released the instrumental I could guarantee you it'd still get R1 A-Listed. It's more a case of creating a new version so people have a reason to actually buy the single even if they already own the album. It's the same principle as copy-and-paste raps being stuck onto pop songs which are released as singles after their parent albums (E.T., All Night Long, Eyes Wide Shut, etc.)

Everyone, expect a new Gaga song from Born This Way to rocket up iTunes very soon. She has just announced on Facebook that the video for her next single is 'just days away'. She has kept the 4th singles indentity very well hidden if the video is coming out so soon, I hope its either 'Scheisse' or 'Marry The Night'. I could easily see it being 'Hair' however, which I love anyway, but I want to see a Gaga song high up on iTunes that we havent seen high before.
^ It'll be You & I :( Don't get me wrong I love it but it'd be her weakest single - Hair has to be next then Marry The Night/Scheisse (both could still be huge as 5th/6th singles) followed by whichever of the two is left. Then maybe Bloody Mary/Heavy Metal Love to finish off on something different. Maybe fit Americano in too :P

I hope it's Marry the Night. Scheisse is awful imo. I counted 14 seconds of the song which I liked.

It could be You and I since it went top 10 on US iTunes.

I hate 'You And I' :puke: Why GaGa??? You have some great songs on your album yet you release a non-event ballad. What's worse is that UK Radio will really pick up on it simply because it's a ballad (they did the same to CKB - it's been everywhere recently :()

Of course, this is assuming she does release it. She could surprise us and release a good song like 'Schiesse', 'Americano' etc.
