1991-2011

Give me some suggestions of who you want nominated and i'll then put them into some sort of format for a competition to work out the winner. Probably a similar one to the record of the year.

So, basically, it's the artists who you think have been both the best and most influential from the last 20 years.

Remember, this bit isn't necessarily your top choices, just suggestions for nominees

I'll give till the weekend and then gather them together and start it from Monday

EDIT: Just for a bit of clarity, as it could get a bit confusing. Let's say the artist needs to have released at least one album in that time (excluding greatest hits)

Madonna

Michael Jackson

Not my personal top 3, but they have influenced a lot of people. I would say Lady Gaga, but it's too early plus I'd be slightly biased :P

Well for influence i'd say; Eminem, Beyonce, Take That, Madonna, Britney Spears, Arctic Monkeys, Killers, Sugababes and many others, but these are the first to come to mind.

EDIT: Oh yeah and Coldplay & Oasis

Madonna

Kylie Minogue

U2

Coldplay

Take That

Robbie Williams

Oasis

Eminem

^ I'd say these are all pretty influential from that period

I'll think of more tomorrow :P

Britney comes to mind as well, she did kick start the whole bubblegum pop phase of the late 90s/early 00s. Also Mariah, and her amazing voice!

I stand by what I said in the iTunes thread: Cher Lloyd.

Seriously though, I honestly don't have a clue. When I was younger, I didn't really pay attention to which artists could've possibly been starting trends, and which songs sound similar, and so on. When I was little, Britney Spears and Eminem were probably the biggest, and had the largest effect on culture, I felt, but I think that's just because they were so popular with children. I don't know if musically they were very influential.

I would say Usher was very influential though. So many of the newer RnB artists of today in the US cite him as a major, or primary influence.

2Pac

The Notorious B.I.G.

Beck

When you actually think about, there really aren't that many British artists with a really wide influence over popular music in the last 20 years.

Has no one really said Amy Winehouse yet? It may be a bit CLICHÉ but she still needs to be mentioned.

I agree, she started the whole "blue eyed soul" revival. Adele may not have had a record deal in the first place if it wasn't for her! :o

Influential

Jeff Buckley

Daft Punk

Aphex Twin

Best

Tori Amos

Manic Street Preachers

Blur

Nirvana.

Spice Girls (I know people will laugh at this and they are hideously naff now looking back but they dominated the world and every girl band since has wanted to match that success. I remember GA saying so in one of their early interviews)

Michael Jackson

Madonna

Blur

Oasis

Green Day

Beck

Tori Amos

P!nk

Foo Fighters

Bjork

TLC

I will add more if I think of them ^_^

I genuinely think this site needs some form of best artist ever competition.

Maybe Calvin Harris and Swedish House Mafia deserve to be mentioned since so many of the recent club bangers sound like either I'm Not Alone or One

And maybe Dizzee Rascal too as he pretty much kickstarted the big resurgence of the UK urban scene from late 2008 to early 2010 (it's still been around since then but to a much lesser extent)

Also, I don't know if they've been particularly 'influential' (probably not) but I'll nominate The Prodigy as they're the best act of the last 20 years IMO. :P

Mariah Carey - certainly not my favourite artist but her influence on female singers ever since 1990 has been ridiculous!

Spice Girls - influential in terms of girl-groups, female singers and even British singers in general. Their world domination from 1996-1998 was absolutely insane! So many records broken, so many records sold!

Destiny's Child - biggest-selling R&B girl-group ever and they have influenced so many R&B musicians ever since.

Usher - many recent R&B/Hip-Hop musicians see him as one of their main inspirations and he dominated the charts in the early noughties.

Amy Winehouse - resurrected the Jazz/Soul sound and is most likely the reason why Duffy and Adele got signed.

Beyonce - no denying that, like Usher, she is seen as one of the main inspirationns of many recent R&B singers. Her vocal ability, dancing ability, personality, worldwide success and even acting ability is influential.

Kylie Minogue - I think her iconic status and dance sound (before the GaGa craze) was seen as really influential. I wouldn't be surprised if GaGa herself was inspired by that CGYOMH video.

Coldplay - I think they're seen as highly influential amongst upcoming indie/rock bands.

Btw, I think Madonna and MJ were more influential in the 80s...unless I'm misinterpreting the question.

In terms of influence over the po charts/ pop stars I'm amazed at some of the suggestions so far....

Anyway for me the two below...

Madonna- there are two main schools of female artists, those who use image/ sex to sell a lot, Britney, Kylie, christina (to some extent) and countless others over that period are directly influenced by Madonna so she's choice one .

Whitney- and those female singers that belt it out where the voice is what it's all about- sorry but Mariah is a follower on this one not an influencer.

Males

Whilst Robbie Williams has been the most successful though influences are hard to find really. Jackson of course springs to mind esp for Timberlake, Derulo etc

Also the spice girls for the evolution of girl groups and the host of copycats they had at the time, Oasis for illustrating there was serious money in Indie music, and Eminem for similarly illustrating the money to be made from Rap

Christina Aguilera

Britney Spears

Cher

Tina Turner

Lady GaGa

Mariah Carey

Whitney Houston

Kylie Minogue

Adele

Amy Winehouse

Cheryl Cole

Robbie Williams

Ronan Keating

U2

Backstreet Boys

Blink-182

David Guetta

Taio Cruz

Coldplay

Red Hot Chilli Peppers

Kelly Osborne

P!nk

Spice Girls

Michael Jackson

Oasis

Daft Punk

Foo Fighters

Dido

Scissor Sisters

Beyoncé or Destiny's Child

Usher

Justin Beiber

Blur

Stereophonics

Eminem

Jay-Z

Rihanna

Chris Brown

Kanye West

Justin Timberlake

James Blunt

Norah Jones

Michael Bublé

....theres so many!!!!

oh and Leona Lewis & Susan Boyle, Will Young & Kelly Clarkson should be credited as influence of dreams being fulfilled from reality TV singing competitions

Girls Aloud - they really broke the mould within talent shows, and also have (without question) released some of the best pure pop tracks of the decade.

And yeah, Amy Winehouse has to be mentioned too because, as has been said, she started the whole blue eyed soul thing that ruled 2008.

Also:

Beyonce

Rihanna

Lady Gaga (f*** that, it's not too early - she's amazing and she's influencing lots of people already!)

Jay-Z

Jennifer Lopez

Shania Twain

Hikaru Utada (deffo in Japan anyway!)
