Now on this week's chart we've got that Valerie x 2 thing. I say they should be together, coz its the same damn song i.e. Adele was listed together recently, as are many others....Lulu in 1986. What's your preference?

I agree. I would've had them combined aswell, but ultimately, it's up to their record labels I guess, and they chose not to combine them, for whatever reason.

As per a few of my posts in the last week I agree with separating the two versions of Valerie.
Amy is only the featured artist on the Mark Ronson version. Combining them would be like combining the two versions of Empire State Of Mind.

Well, the order of the crediting doesn't matter. The two versions of Empire State of Mind could've been combined aswell, if their record label chose to do so. Currently in the chart, for example, Dirty Dancer by Usher ft. Enrique Iglesias is being combined with Dirty Dancer by Enrique Iglesias ft. Usher and Lil Wayne.

It might be weird, but they could've done it.

Not that it matters really. Whatever they decide, they have their reasons, and I'm happy to go along with it, even if I can't understand the motives behind them.

I'm sure we've had this discussion before? It's only listed as 'Usher feat. Enrique Iglesias' on Usher's album because it's Usher's album. It's still the same song. 'Valerie' by Amy Winehouse is a different song to 'Valerie' by Mark Ronson feat. Amy Winehouse.

'Different to' and 'different than' are both generally acceptable as well (although 'different from' is 'more' correct in that things differ from other things I suppose).

No, it's the same SONG, just a slightly different VERSION

No. The instrumentals are very different (check it out on Youtube or something), and it doesn't have a rap verse from Lil Wayne. Those two versions of Dirty Dancer are probably more different to each other than those two versions of Valerie.

Even songs with different titles have been combined before. Gettin' Over by David Guetta ft. Chris Willis gets combined to Gettin' Over You by David Guetta & Chris Willis ft. Fergie & LMFAO. And the OCC even changed the title of the song after they announced the remix.

Should The Zutons' original be thrown in as well then? That's the same song, just a different version.

Well if it is a different instrumental then it's just a remix. The Lil Wayne version is also a remix. And Gettin' Over You is also a remix of Gettin' Over. The Mark version of Valerie is not a remix of the Amy version, or vice versa. Amy recorded the vocals once as a featured artist on Mark Ronson's song and then again as her own song. Combining them makes as much sense as combining the two versions of Empire State Of Mind.

You can't take two songs by completely different lead artists and say they're the same song. No one complained when Greg Street's Turn My Swag On which featured Soulja Boy Tell 'Em and Soulja Boy Tell 'Em's own Turn My Swag On charted separately. I don't see how Valerie is any different.

Seriously, that's not how it works. The managers decide whether they want to combine certain tracks or not. It's nothing more than that. There's no rules like if an artist re-records the vocals they have to be counted seperately. There's nothing like that. The record labels just decided not to have the tracks combined (or were too lazy to get them combined).

The Empire State of Minds could've been combined, and the Gettin' Over (You)s could've charted seperately. There's no rules saying they couldn't. Not to mention, the OCC can be asked to use different credits to what you see on iTunes.

And 'Don't Wanna Go Home' could be combined with 'Sex On Fire' if the respective record labels agreed to that. That's beside the point. We're arguing whether they *should* be combined, not whether they *can* (of course they can).

The strongest arguement for combining both versions of Valerie, imo, is that they both are using the same vocalist (Amy), with the same lyrics, just Ronson's version has some added production. At least, I think. I haven't heard Amy's solo version, so correct me on that if I'm wrong.

Empire State of Mind is completely different because in Part 2, Alicia has taken the chorus and added different lyrics to the vocals.

Yeah. That's true. I think, if it was up to me, I would've combined them. I understand your arguements though.

How do you know they are? The Usher version hasn't sold anywhere near enough to come close to charting in the top 200 on its own
