Congrats on getting through izzles! Especially with something so bonkers *.*

On a separate note, i was just listening to 'The Call of the Mountains' on Spotify and this came on after it:

Safe to say that without any other knowledge of Eluveitie, i was quite taken aback by how it errr wasn't quite as easy listening as TCOTM is! :lol:

Hahahaha, yeah. That is quite common among bands that I like and of that ilk, Eluveitie, Amaranthe, Tristania, Battle Beast, they'll have a pop single to increase their appeal, like The Call Of The Mountains and metal singles, to appeal to metalheads who would otherwise dismiss them as a bit soft. King is definitely in the latter camp.

A Rose To Epona is another (mostly) clean Eluveitie song. Omnos, their previous entry, is kind of a mix. A lot of my BJSC searching is listening to loads of tracks from these sort of bands and finding the songs like TCOTM and Amaranthine :lol: Obviously helps that this is about the only way I enjoy harsh vocals, when they're mixed with clean vocals, but it's obviously not for everyone. TCOTM is really unusual among Eluveitie's discography that it has no harsh vocals at all and could fit with Nightwish/Within Temptation/Evanescence on the next level down.

YEAH NO ONE MESSES WITH NAGISA SHIOTA

Anyway, 3-nen E-gumi Utatan's Jiriki Hongan Revolution. My 50th entry. And one of my favourite songs of the last few months, along with the similarly great Bye Bye Yesterday by the same group - a group made up of five of the voice actors for Assassination Classroom. Incidentally, old Daehun entrant moumoon did one of the endings for that show with the beautiful Hello Shooting Star, so there is already some BJSC connection.

But yeah, Jiriki Hongan Revolution has been incredibly awesome in the last few months and so while part of my love for it is probably my love for the show, another huge part of it that it is this kickass pop-rock tune that fails to get old. Five different alternating voices (totally representing the 5 years of Séyetana in this contest), a wonderful hook, some cool translated lyrics, I could have gone for an old fave but I thought this was far more representative of Séyetana lately, as it's Japanese and fun and I would send this sort of thing all the time if I could. I hope it finds some fans at least.

Anime songs revolution here we come *.*

  • Author

Oh yeah I meant to post this with my entry but I forgot as I'd uploaded it a few days ago on private (to not give away my latest entry).

As my last two Séyetana nightcore compilations were composed of 2 years worth of entries each, I decided that I'd just do them yearly from now. And because I'm now doing transitions when I make nightcore (to give a bit more of a reason for me doing them, practice at my mixing skillz), I've done that. I somehow struck absolute gold with the Mirror Mirror to Tanz Mit Mir transition, it's perfect (20:16 in this vid).

We DNQed. That happened. Not enough people joined my revolution against the beavers. Sad times. But I'm feeling remarkably zen about it as I saw this coming even before I confirmed.

We're planning the new era though, free of this Q streak expect some recklessness from us (i.e. even more than usual). May possibly include more anime songs against better judgement (well, look Iz, the only songs you have DNQed with in the past year have all been Japanese and pop-rock and most of them connected with anime, do you start to see a pattern here?), however it is where I get a good portion of the music I get obsessed with these days...

~~~~~~~
ALSO, Reinvention.
Where Is The Love samples the base line from Nightwish's Amaranth, one of the highest-ever selling songs in Séyetana, rips off some of the lyrics - compare them exploiting the cadence with 'Where is the love in every fading rainbow' to the original's 'Caress the one, that never-fading rain' - also samples a line or two from Alice Cooper's Poison, and to top it all off, we've entered a club remix that's also been nightcored. Is that successfully twisted enough from a song that probably people don't recognise in the first place? :D
  • Author
Oh yeah @ Cody, I figured out what each singer means:
Blue/Nagisa = first year of pop entries (Wrecking Queens to Years Away), ironically because he's the best character there and that was my weakest year but his voice fits that, being all high
Red/Karma = second year of indie entries (Porcupine to The Ocean) that a lot of the time were indie-leaning to go with the contest at the time, Karma has a slightly weird voice, but good weird.
Blond/Maehara = third year of rock entries (Come Together to iinadukeblue) the most rock or rock-influenced set of entries I've had (with obvious outliers like the two Amaranthe entries just slightly outside these two), Maehara has the deepest voice of the 5.
Brown/Isogai = fourth year of entries (KNDR to Chisu), a set of entries that were just fairly nice and uplifting, Isogai's character is that he's a popular leader and great guy.
Green/Kayano = fifth year of entries (Stellar to 3-nen), ALL THE ANIME ENTRIES, Kayano has the highest voice.
I totally made all of that up but I did get it to fit in the end.
~~
Also like when this contest has finished, I've put together a list of my favourite BJSC songs of 37 to 86 to finish off my five-year thing satisfactorily. It won't be HUGE on commentary as I save that for the end of year but it'll just be a nice little thing to wrap it all up and revisit a few older gems.
'Jiriki Hongan Revolution' has actually really wormed its way into my head, it was never going to have a hope of qualifying really but it fits the bill of 'standout and broadly quite good Séyetana entry' once again, so I continue to send my support across the border. Happy anniversary! x
Looking forward to this mini countdown thing.
  • Author
First off, you know what time it is? Potential time. Coincidentally I'm not feeling entirely sure about what I'll enter this month, however, my 51st entry will probably (barring something super obvious turning up) be one of these three:
All probably catering to very different audiences but if you happen to have feedback that'd be appreciated.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Séyetana's 50 Contest Special Top 200 BJSC Tracks

This is a countdown, alongside a minor countdown of my own entries (it's been a while since I've posted in the rank ur entries thread so that part might be a bit new), of my favourite tracks that I am grateful to this contest for discovering. Well, not exactly discovering, let's get to the criteria for inclusion.

  • The song must have been a main contest entry entered between BJSC 37 and BJSC 86 inclusive. Apologies spinoffs and all the great tracks from before then, it was enough work getting this shortlist together.
  • All discoveries that have stayed underground are eligible
  • For non-discoveries and tracks that became hits, I must have judged that I would not like the song as much as I would had it never been entered to BJSC. That's the key factor, that it was the song being entered here that gave me a new level of enjoyment, reason to listen and meaning behind the song. So basically songs I would never have listened to and/or enjoyed as much were it not for this contest.
  • This means 90% of all entries were eligible, it's also to stop things like Little Talks, Shatter Me or Runaway (U & I) being up the top when my love for those incredible songs wasn't really due to them getting entered.
  • 432 entries were shortlisted as being 'tracks I consider incredible', from 89 countries. 20 entries from one country was the highest individual total.
  • 201-432 are in this pastebin if you want to browse. I considered putting the next 100 in as well but it was already getting awful eliminating them at this stage.
  • 68 countries made it to the top 200, with the most from one country being 14.
  • Extending it to the top 200 (my original plan was top 100) means every contest is represented with one song or more.
  • I shall be going through the bottom lot very quickly and with minimal commentary because this is not intended to be something that drags out for months, hopefully finished by the end of the week more like.
  • And it starts this evening.

200 . Pupok - 86 - Aelyn - Give Love A Try

I wish the low numbers didn't hide my love for this lot (and that I had more time/energy to write detailed pieces again about these songs) because I would happily listen to any of these when they show up on my playlists, as they really do from time to time. From my first stanning of dear departed Zechonia with Alexz Johnson to my top 2 from the contest just gone, all of these are very big tunes that I've played and overplayed a lot. Especial shoutout must go to the non-qualifiers here, Greenwashing, So Much Love, Goodnight Moon, Gabriel, De Ceux, Soldier, Come, Wild, One Shot (tons of Daehun), all deserved so much better but at least they have a fan in me. And like, Ein, Melissa Horn (this, and a few others I didn't even give any points at the time but it grew on me and in fact managed to introduce it to my dad and he loves it now), Italove, Forget, SoSo, great memories built into all the early ones from being with me for so long and in those formative contests where I got permanently addicted.

46 . 67 - KNDR - You Can't See The World In Silence (feat. Adam Lyons)

47 . 57 - Echosmith - Come Together

48 . 42 - Xenia - Sing You Home

49 . 38 - Emmon - Distance

50 . 37 - The Wrecking Queens - Middle And Between

I do have regrets sometimes. Notably 3 from the August contests where I've always underperformed, but while these 5 are good songs I wouldn't have shortlisted them into my top 432 (yeah that's catchy). Also I am one of those people who has their debut as their worst entry, it wasn't a great choice and I've had five years to regret that. KNDR's a rather recent one and I think I had a momentary lapse of judgement because it's one of the few times where I've sent something that so effortlessly blends into the crowd - never a good idea. Come Together meanwhile I've recently come to the conclusion that it's Against The Current's Outsiders without any punch to the chorus or vocals. Which is why that one did well and this one didn't.

Ooh hype for this! :cheer:

Fantastic to see that triple helping of Jadakissnia :wub: was just listening to 'Toccata' *.*

Some other amazing songs here *.* $ORO and Father Hu$$la in particular are huge recent highlights, yay for song names with dollar signs. :lol:

yay at a 3 sided recognition in your top 200 Iz :D

I don't go much on your #2 and #3 potentials but #1 sounds like something I may possibly give points to.

I WILL MAKE YOU LOVE THE NICO & VINZ VERSION MARK MY WORDS

The Bloody Beetroots :heart: :heart: :heart: I've been trying to find a song by him to send to the contest but none of them seem to pop out that much or sound too generic, at least his music label gave me "Bring Back The Summer"

On your potentials, DEFINITELY #1, another Requiem style jam :wub: #2 was sweet, but far too long and #3 isn't really my thing (though it may have it's fans ;o) so my choice is quite clear here~

Looking forward to this countdown and lovely to see a lot of my entries even if they are outside the top 200, hoping some sort of miracle can happen later on :thinking:

Edited by Chez Wombat

Hooray for the one appearance already! Justice for Gabriel. (Other highlights of that lot so far are Lianne La Havas, The Bloody Beetroots and of course the various Jadakissnia songs but especially 'Virtual Paradise', plus 'Spring' and 'Huri-Khan' (retro dance *.*) and other criminal DNQs 'One Shot', 'DE CEUX' (we miss u Umi) and 'Greenwashing').

Yesss at the disowning of Echosmith. :kink:

Shall hear your potentials a bit later as I listen to the other 84 potentials various people have posted :lol:

  • Author

I'm hearing good things for #1 and #3, good good, both I feel would be solid choices. #2 is one of those where I've been getting obsessed because of a certain emotional anime moment that's affected me so while it's very well-sung it'd probably do the least well in a contest. Will be hard to choose between them.

Actually the Nico & Vinz version is pretty decent, just not as good as the original. And yes, I really miss Umiiruka, I had 12 of his entries shortlisted, probably the highest ratio to total entries.

148 . Zechonia - 50 - The Birthday Massacre - Leaving Tonight

149 . Terra Avium - 84 - Hiatus - Precious Little

150 . Ingermanlandia - 62 - Ingrid Michaelson - Girls Chase Boys

I would strongly recommend that anyone checks out any of these they don't know (as unhelpful as such a general imperative is). All so good. Piano ballads from Terra Avium, Purity Ring rap from Utopia, proper indie from Kylienips in the form of a 9 minute song, one of the longest winners from Pavel, early faves from Espen, Altyr (then Vojvodina) and Ramrynia, the first gloriously quirky Kadebostany entry, both of Truls' stormers of entries (for Circles, and Love Is In Bloom for that matter, I was embroiled in their status in the contest so much they didn't become separate from the contest for me so they're fine here), Lex's better Tegan & Sara entry - and the second best track on Heartthrob - that I always associate with that early contest in 2013. The subtle Nightswim is a beauty I'm glad I got into, I don't get into many BJSC slow songs but Owl Eyes showed her potential on that. Similarly The Woods is icy (geddit, Frost) and beautiful while G# is incredibly wistful. Life Goes On is a wonderful Caerfyrddia farewell entry, Aitakute Aitakute was possibly the first BJSC song I ended up stanning, Undaunted and Platinum Chains are big dance piano anthems that crash their melodies perfectly, Lapse Of Time is a cool lopsided pop entry, as is Chloe Howl's Rumour. K-Pop songs with different melodies, GFRIEND's classical and sweeping while Crazy's is crazy, Ailee and Seo In Young just strong and outright in their declarations. One of Alteria's only entries, a funny and catchy 'meta' song. One of What's only entries, the glorious Sock N Doll. Some of the best of Isconia and Zechonia in Heaven Sent and Yindy, two unique indie songs that BJSC could do with getting a couple of clones of, a few more beautiful songs in Graveyard Whistling and Not Fooling Around and finishing the march to the top 100 with the epic march towards a sun's corona that Tide: The Paradox Effect comes with. That could use a few more paragraphs.

41 . 55 - Z. Hera - Peacock (English version)

42 . 85 - Trippple Nippples - LSD

43 . 39 - Alyssa Reid - The Game

44 . 44 - Poppy & The Jezebels - Sign In, Dream On, Drop Out

45 . 43 - Shell Perris - Where Is My Happy Ending?

Mostly continuing dumping out my first year of entries, Shell Perris and Poppy are a bit on the cutesy side to stack up against most of the rest of my lot, while The Game has mostly redeemed itself up this far by continuing appreciation for Alone Again. Though we are getting already to the point where I still think most of these are enjoyable, so we have to toss out one of my very recent entries, LSD. It's addictive and I was stoked it got me a bit of a different audience but it's quite comfortably my least good entry of this year so far. It's possibly a bit TOO abrasive to be truly great. And there's Peacock, my abortive first K-Pop entry where I decided it was a good idea to pussy out and go for the English version instead of the foreign version. I got repaid with a resounding DNQ. It's only up this high because like with Rough, the instrumental is pretty good at feeling sweeping and grand.

I would say the third Potential is the best one, either that or the first I think could do well in the contest :)

Chloe Howl at 110 *.* That would be one of the songs or artists I wish I could have sent if I were in the contest back then :(

Also WHAT *.* What a song :wub:

Potentials ~

'Dope' >> 'Dreaming' >> 'Ichiban No Takaramono'

Yeah this was rather clear-cut for me ;o None of these are really up to your standard for the rest of 2016 IMO to be honest but 'Dope' is easily the best of the three. Found 'Dreaming' a little bit underwhelming (but it might be a bit of a grower), and as for the other one... I suppose if you don't want 'Jiriki Hongan Revolution' to be your least successful entry any more :lol: that's all I'll say about that one :kink:

Yay for 3 more Persephonia appearances!! Although 'Out Of Yourself' is still superior to 'Circles'. x Getting the feeling I have at most two songs in the top 100 now if Dawn and TSRP didn't make it in - just need Jay Dabhi and possibly BOOTS? to do it for me going forward. Unless I'm forgetting something obvious. Much love for 'Graveyard Whistling', 'The Woods', 'Settle Down', 'Platinum Chains' and 'Obedear' among many others in that lot :heart:

I will get an anime song/Japanese pop song in the final one of these days! Probably my main goal for BJSC left.

And keep an eye out, there's a couple more you've forgotten.

BJSC Rank:

The top 100 starts with one of the best Taahino entries, cruelly consigned to the semis but did very well in Rejects IIRC to make up for that. Orange Caramel are a very good value K-Pop group with nearly every song and Catallena is a great example of that, WVFFLIFE contains that glorious witchy drop and ends up my favourite Jadakissnia entry for now while Don't Go is incredibly lovely and to this date remains the best thing Rae Morris has come out with. RCVR and Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence are other recent faves, the former has a beautiful instrumental, and for the latter I was completely unaware of it so it was a great introduction to a classic instrumental for me.

Write About Us is one of the few metal songs entered here, it's dark and brooding and talks about the fates of a group of hapless friends, so instantly a fave. Alas it was in the other semi so I never got a chance to point it. I think the same is true for Sea Of Stars (which wasn't helped by Casey not voting but it wouldn't have qualified anyway SOMEHOW, early BJSC what were you doing?) which has a glorious bubbling undercurrent that completely makes it for me. Thankfully Eli & Fur got another chance and got a top 10 for BanG with a less good song but it was something. Moving onto another artist that was entered twice by the same country, again the first entry was better for Lars Vaular but this one was vaguely successful. It's crazy Norwegian rap and that just works, incredibly. And finally Deaf Club, I've always had a soft spot for it, that little plaintive cry of 'we're moving still' is absolutely lovely.

Séyetana Rank:

40 . 47 - Ruby Frost - Porcupine

Yeah, we're really getting to my good lot, as I already don't regret any of these. Well maybe Porcupine but that's because I passed up my eventual biggest hit in order to get a DNQ with this first, but it's still a great song. Bassically and Hold Me Down are quite indie-pop departures for me, Bassically in particular was a bit of a carbon copy of one song yet to come in my foreign entry rank, but it's fairly great. Hold Me Down is my greatest failure (to try and finally win this thing), it won the semi but proceeded to record one of the worst dips in the final for a semi winner in the pre-18 point stage. Still lovely. And of course I adore The Ocean but I do have better (my apologies Lindsey, I know this is sacrilegious), it's only my 4th or 5th fave TA song by now. Lightshy is still a bop but was also pretty easy to eliminate from contention.

Nice to see Celtic Woman and Ask Embla in here already, two of my best I agree! I seem to remember you really liking 'I'm Not Your Hero' as well so hopefully that'll make a nice New Lexico hat trick.
