I really like stomp and i think its one of their songs that has managed not to dreadfully age badly if you know what i mean.

CLASSIX! And this was me being harsh

Here and Now is horrible and cheesy. Yuck.

On the subject of "Stomp" I recal being in a club when it was No 1 and telling my friend this was No 1 and she responded "You mean there are 39 songs worse than this?" (she was older and lived in a time of Top 40's)....
Oh yes, STOMP. Ugh, how did that TRASH manage to get itself this high.

The only thing trashy about 'Stomp' is the music video, the song has always been one my favourite single releases by them. However, it is one of the less superior tracks on 'Buzz' (which is easily their best album in my opinion).

Oh Buzz is their best album by miles. The first 2 both have some brilliant highs but overall are very patchy. The less said about songs like Experienced the better!

I just find Stomp hilariously bad. Nothing makes me laugh more than a "party"-type/call to the dancefloor song that is A) completely devoid of any kind of joy or fun anyway and B) would clear the dancefloor in an instant in any kind of club/party setting

I only have their first album. I basically hated them after Love's Got A Hold On My Heart and After The Love Has Gone (they had won the clearly very discerning 7-year old me over with One For Sorrow and Heartbeat before that). I moved on to S Club 7 instead :D

Heartbeat and You'll Be Sorry are two of my faves. Aww well One For Sorrow ftw now!

Summer Of Love needs to definitely be in the top three, along with After The Love Has Gone!

No real surprises in the results thus far!

Well I'll just go down the list

One For Sorrow (Remix): I liked both versions of OFS it just depended on what mood i was in when i chose which one to listen too, this version as mentioned was used to launch them in the US and i do remember the video being played on TV here, except i forgot it was them in the video  , all i remembered from back in the day was Lisa dancing in front of the cheetah print! Oh and in case anyone was wondering, this reached #38 on the US dance/club charts, Im not sure if it ever cracked the hot 100.

5,6,7,8: havent listened to this in years...yikes was that cheesy, this has not aged well at all, but i do remember loving it so much back then.

Heartbeat: I like the song, especially the last verse, but it is a bit on the cheesy side, if anything though it was the video that ruined it, i cringed watching it back in the day and i almost couldnt get through it now

Better The Devil You Know: clearly they were attempting another Heartbeat/Tragedy with SYBM/BTDYK (one album track/one unreleased track), it worked sort of I guess as i think it ended up in the 400k range, but this isnt as good as Kylie's, their costumes on tour were really un-imaginative weren't they?

You'll Be Sorry: I never was really into it, although it didnt sound bad just listening to it again, there was much better left on the album, I still say Paradise Lost should have been the third single from Buzz

Here And Now: I loved this one, but its not their strongest, i overplayed the single version and got sick of it, but i did really like this song a lot.

NOOOO! 'Heartbeat' and 'Here And Now' are out FAR too early! 'Say You'll Be Mine' better not be #12 (which I fear it will be! :manson:) 'Stomp' and 'Tragedy' better not get much higher either. The latter in particular is horrendous.

12. Better Best Forgotten - 7.13

UK #2 - 1999

Heartbeat/Tragedy was refusing to leave the top 20 five months after release but it was time for a new single and Better Best Forgotten was the latest offering plucked from Step One. Using the Faye verse/Claire verse/Lisa versebridgemiddleeightcombo it was more ABBA type stuff but only managed two weeks inside the top ten. Their third of four consecutive singles to debut at #2 for them, it was held off the top spot by Boyzone's Comic Relief single and clearly it was time for new material...

11. After The Love Has Gone - 7.20

UK #5 - 1999

Their penultimate release of the last millennium, After The Love Has Gone was the second single from Steptacular and mixed a variety of musical styles. The video and instrumental breakdown suggested oriental influence whilst the body of the song itself were almost a mid-NRG tribute to ABBA's The Winner Takes It All. I like to play both of these, along with Friends' Listen To Your Heartbeat and H & Claire's own top ten hit All Out Of Love all next to each other and appreciate how similar they all are to each other melodically!

The song got stuck behind my personal all time favourite UK top four (Christina Aguilera - Genie In A Bottle, Ann Lee - 2 Times, ATB - Don't Stop, Eiffel 65 - Blue (Da Ba Dee) to debut and peak at #5 and it's fair to say that it's not one of their most well remembered hits. It does well enough here though to just miss out on the top ten...

10. Stomp - 7.24

UK #1 - 2000

Finally posting their second chart topper in 2000 after a string of near misses, midweek chart toppers and #2's, Stomp was the lead single from third album Buzz and topped the charts with a mere 50k sale, bad by current standards but dire in 2000, where the average chart topper sold 118k in its first week. It would have surely been unfair for them to miss out on a 2000 chart topper though, considering that there were 42 of the things!

Sampling Chic's Everybody Dance quite heavily, it's not a massive fan favourite but judging by the amount of Youtube views it has in comparison to some of their others, perhaps it's more fondly remembered by the public? A very colourful video, they all got a chance to shine vocally and show off their new looks, Lisa's iconic blue hair and braces and Faye even braided her hair again for the occasion! It just about squeaks into the top ten here but is indeed actually one of their smaller selling hits considering it was the only other #1 they achieved besides the obvious...

9. Tragedy - 7.25

UK #1 - 1998

Joe Public's favourite Steps song next. As was previously mentioned, Tragedy was the double a-side to Heartbeat, both offered something completely different and received more promotion at different stages of the single's life. As soon as the xmas madness had died down the single started on a rare (for the late 90s!) ascent back up the charts, eventually climbing up to give them their first UK #1 single in the first week of 1999. The Bee Gees cover, complete with a classic high of a finish in the form of a trademark Claire wail, took on a life of its own and hung around for months afterwards popping up in every school disco, dodgy office party and general gathering of people going. It became by far their biggest hit and indeed one of the biggest ever hits, comfortably inside the UK's top 100 selling singles of all time. Unlike Heartbeat, it wasn't available on Step One which may have helped to keep sales up, although appeared as a bonus track on later editions of the album and again on Steptacular.

I always felt that the production was incredibly similar to another #1 from earlier in 1998, Feel It by The Tamperer feat Maya, I wonder if it had been inspired by that as to be honest it didn't sound like the production on any other Steps singles...

The video of course was another 'moment', the girls all about to get married with their real fathers all featuring as themselves in cameo roles as well as Pete Waterman as the DJ! And how can anybody forget THAT dance routine, the hands to the side of the head classic which became a staple across school playground's in 1999 and their most remembered dance routine.

AH christmas 1998 when EVERYONE in the clubs was doing the full routine to "Tragedy" or maybe it was the clubs I was in?

It was actually available on the Bee Gees covers album that was out at the time (along with "More Than A Woman" by 911 and "Night Fever" by Andy Garcia) called "Gotta Get A Message To You". Not surprised it didn't rank higher, like most signature songs it has been overplayed now...

Oh poor BBF, another one I had hoped would be top 10. It's all the worse because Stomp has beaten it.
Surprised/dismayed to see Tragedy that low too. For all its cheesiness it's undeniably a joyous pop song and overplay hasn't dampened it one bit for me which is rare for that type of song.

Pretty sure we have a copy of that in the house somewhere  I knew that there was some purpose to recording Tragedy, I just couldn't remember what it was but indeed there were a load of Bee Gees covers around at the time...

8. Say You'll Be Mine - 7.37

UK #4 - 1999

Trying the same trick again, for xmas 1999 Steps released a track on the album twinned with a previously unavailable cover version. It didn't work quite as well and this one debuted at #7 although eventually peaked at #4. Say You'll Be Mine was a very light, catchy and happy mid-tempo track which gave the whole band a chance to shine on the vocals.

My favourite thing by far about this release though was the video, which cleverly saw the band re-enacting scenes from various recent (well in 1999 they were) films including Austin Powers, Titanic, There's Something About Mary, Armageddon and Batman Returns and Romeo & Juliet. It was charming to watch and a really great concept for a pop video. Nice to see this finish inside the top ten.

7. Summer Of Love - 7.44

UK #5 - 2000

The double a-side to ballad When I Said Goodbye, Summer Of Love was a latin flavoured pop song with a dance beat, probably the most hi-NRG song of their career. It had a colourful, lively video and again this was very much a full band effort with every member of Steps getting a chance to sing. Faye had even decided to get the full dread look back just for the occasion, not so taken by Claire's two tone blonde/purple look though! It was a popular song here though and despite getting very little airplay at the time (from what I can recall), it finishes comfortably top ten! Still, at least it didn't deny The Corrs of their only #1 :P
