It was released on October 24, 1989 by Sire Records in America. Europe had to wait to December 26th 1995 for it to be released by Maverick (as the second single from Something To Remember)(the fourth single from Like A Prayer was Dear Jessie in europe). The UK release had 4 bonus postcards in the 2nd cd release which was limited edition. (See the images for the images of the postcards). http://eil.com/Gallery/57732b.jpg. Madonna describes her difficult love-hate relationship with her father during her youth in the song. Oh Father spent two weeks at #1 on the South African singles chart in 1996. As of 2008 the song has sold 59,000 copies in the UK. Video: http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_38T64sfKt3Y/SwQXR4VHGLI/AAAAAAAAIJg/VfdskAnPzGA/s1600/fath25.jpg David Fincher directed a very strong dramatic video that matched the song perfectly. Shot completely in black & white, the video shows images of Madonna as a little girl with her angry father yelling at her. It also shows the funeral of the girl's mother, explicitly referring to the death of Madonna's mother. As the girl is dancing on her mother's grave, in a beautiful snowy landscape, a grown-up Madonna watches her. The video was so explicit that MTV restricted it for being too disturbing.? The music video was nominated for Best Short Form Music Video at the 33rd Grammy Awards. It also has been honoured by Rolling Stone as one of the "The 100 Top Music Videos", placed at number 66. Performances: Madonna has only ever performed the song during the church segment on the Blond Ambition Tour Madonna performed a medley of Live To Tell and Oh Father. It was one of her best vocal performances of the show. One of the dancers walked around with an urn of incense, then danced with her. September 29, 201113 yr Thanks for posting this song :D I love it to bits! I only heard it for the first time a few weeks back! It's a really emotional song, as lot's of people can relate to it, including my friend, who I told she may want to listen to this song. The video is really emotional too, especially when the dad shouts at the girl for trying on her mothers jewlery and make up. Can't believe it was banned from MTV, it's not at all disturbing, just moving! :P
September 29, 201113 yr Def features in my top 10 and is one of my top played madonna songs on my itunes. The song and video are beautiful and the performance on BA is stunning! Please revisit on a future tour!!
September 29, 201113 yr One of her best, in my top 3 from Like A Prayer, beaten only by the title track.
September 29, 201113 yr My favourite Madonna ballad  I properly got into it when Sia did a cover last year, and I knew I'd heard the song before but I was shocked when I saw it was Madonna!
October 1, 201113 yr Author I first heard Oh Father when I was 13 back in 1998 I didn't really give it much attention at the time but who would. I brought Like A Prayer & Something To Remember albums both on the same day so I knew I could play the song on either album. It's only really about the last 5 or 6 years that I've really grown to love Oh Father. I love the line "you can't hurt me now". I wonder what Madonna's father made of the song & the video. (He seems like a strict but cool guy I hope he's ok with his cancer would better would be if he's totally clear), Oh father is in my top 3 of the Like A Prayer album with Keep It Together & Cherish. Like vibe, I would also love M to perform it (hopefully) on the next world tour!.
