27. MULDER AND SCULLY- Catatonia (203,300)

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/6/63/Catatonia-Mulder--Scully-109700.jpg

The song that broke the band big time in the UK came in January 1998 with their first top 20 smash debuting at No 3. Interestingly their only other top 10 hit not to feature on this chart "Dead From The Waistdown" just fails to make out list some 5k short of our No 41.

Beetlebum is amazing, one of Blur's finest tracks. Far better than their biggest seller from this era. A shame Tender doesn't count as that eclipses them all...

Oh, I love Beetlebum too. I'd say my top 5 Blur tracks would be:

1. Universal

2. Beetlebum

3. This Is A Low

4. Out Of Time

5. Tender

26. THE DAY WE CAUGHT THE TRAIN- Ocean Colour Scene (206,600)

Always a bit sub-weller in my eyes (he's on the piano in the vid clip below), but there is no denying that they put together a relative successful run of top 20 singles 96-98, the best selling of which is this effort, again from the summer of 96 which was the very height of the movement.

25. THE BALLAD OF TOM JONES- Space & Cerys Matthews (208,000)

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/8/8d/Space-The-Ballad-Of-Tom-Ones-CD1.jpg

Outstripping both bands indivdual singles, "The Ballad Of Tom Jones" proves that Britpop could actually be quite wry and humourless when it chose to be. It marked the end for Space though who never again hit the top 10.

24. SLIGHT RETURN- The Bluetones (214,000)

Briefly hailed as the best thing since the last big, The Bluetones kinda exploded into national recognition when "Slight Return" debuted at No 2 behind Babylon Zoo in early 1996. Whilst never the most exciting of bands they managed to get a No 1 with debut "Expecting to Fly" before meandering along for a decade, 1998's "If" being a highlight for me in their later works.

Yes, for some reason in my head I meant "not to feature on this rundown" but didn't write it! altered- thanks

I'm sorry but Radar is infinitely better that the mock-Madness of Country House. Radar was the sign of a band taking every chance possible to subvert the typical shit that makes the top 10 (and it still made the Top 10!)

WELL, if we're all playing that game then mine would be:

01 Out Of Time

02 To The End

03 Tender

04 Beetlebum

05 For Tomorrow

06 Trimm Trabb

07 This Is A Low

08 Coffee & TV

09 Chemical World

10 Trouble In The Message Centre

What's obvious so far is there is very little from the first and last albums in these top 10s.

I did nearly put She's So High and Stereotypes in my top 10 but definitely nothing from Think Tank.

I guess apart from The Oasis tracks and Country Life that'll be in the Top 10, I would have thought Supergrass and Pulp will be there as well.
Presumably both of the big Verve singles too?

And maybe something from the Manics?
