14. CIGARETTES AND ALCOHOL- Oasis (295,700)

http://www.chartstats.com/images/artwork/14172.jpg

Proving that with every single they released the sales got bigger, not only the chart positions, here's the fourth of five releases from the band during 1994. Peaking at No 7 it was their final single to peak outisde the top 5 for some 13 years! and was the last in 4 years to sell under 300k!

13. IF YOU TOLERATE THIS YOUR CHILDREN WILL BE NEXT- Manic Street Preachers (315,100)

The Manics First No 1 single is up next. Debuting at the top in Sep 98 it denied the lovely Steps top billing (even though it was outsold before the year end by them). Penned about the Spanish Civil War and the Welsh idealists who went to volunteer, it's probably a bit more intellectual than your average No 1 single but hey there was room for al in 98!

12. STAND BY ME- Oasis (315,900)

The Only release from "Be Here Now" not to top the charts, "Stand By Me" is one of their more underrated tracks. Written about Gallagher's move down to London and his mother checking up on him, which inspired him to make a sunday roast which gave him a bout of food poisoning hence "Made a meal and threw it up on Sunday"- something I never knew!

Great song, would have made it three out of three #1s from the album if it weren't (indirectly) for a drunk driver! The only other time they got close to that was when "Let There Be Love" missed out - another of their most underrated singles.

11. SIT DOWN/ SIT DOWN (REMIX)- James (323,000)

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/1/1c/James_sit_down.jpg

Slightly contentious inclusion No 2, but here's why I included it. They are great! Oh and also "Sit Down" was remixed and charted in the top 10 in 1998 (in the Brit Pop era) so sales above are combined for both versions (91 & 98). Really straddling the gap between Madchester and Brit Pop James had a string of successes from 91 through to 1999 and whilst never sold enough to chart this did, 1997's "Whiplash" album is also certified classic is at least 19 countries!

Never been a fan of Sit Down, although I do rather like quite a few of the other James singles. The main joy for me about that post is it confirms that Common People has made the top 10! :cheer:

10. COMMON PEOPLE- Pulp (332,600)

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/c/cb/Pulp_-_Common_People.JPG

One of the most defining moments of the movement, "Common People" almost emerged from nowhere, but weeks later it was a song you felt you always knew. I recall the sun running an article with diagrams on how to dance like Jarvis Cocker, and from being outsiders it became Cocker's world (briefly) topped off by that BRITS interuption!

Just :yahoo:

Ha! Only just sneaked in then. :D

Still THE definitive britpop single as far as I'm concerned.

I agree, utter classic.

I really cannot think of another song that better summed up the feelings of an era so well, definitely a contender in my books for the best single released ever. It's probably not my personal favourite one as such (although it's close) but it just had literally everything - Perhaps it's just people of my age who get this but Common People was literally a lifestyle at the time and Jarvis' lyrics spoke to me in a way that no other I can think of has come close to.

Agreed.

Common People took ages to grow on me. I didn't like it at the start and it took about three years to like it.

I really like Sit Down, but to be fair they do have a lot of better songs. They've a cracking singles collection, as do Shed 7.

Common People really is just wonderful.

17. LIVE FOREVER- Oasis (281,100)

I never knew this sold that much considering it only peaked at 10 :o its probably my favourite by them except maybe Don't Look Back in Anger

just catching up with this thread now, but this is pretty intersting, much love for Alright, If You Tolerate This, Sit Down and Common People in particular

09. BITTERSWEET SYMPHONY- The Verve (347,800)

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/0/04/The_Verve_-_Bitter_Sweet_Symphony_CD1.jpg

An EPIC record in many ways and one with 1997 stamped all over it, this was the general public's introduction to the band when it stormed to No 2 that June. With a little help from the Rolling Stones, The Verve became a band of such stature in 97/98 to be able to challenge the critical and sales prowess of Oasis, but unlike the latter they never agree long enough to stay together beyond a few years.
