Cherish was released as the third single from her fourth studio album Like a Prayer. Cherish was a great success topping the Canadian once again for Madonna and pretty much going top 5 everywhere else around the world. In the UK it became Madonna's 21st top ten single peaking at #3. In the United States, Cherish became Madonna's sixteenth consecutive top-five single, a record in Hot 100 chart history. Cherish also it #1 on the adult contemporary chart (her third Live to Tell and La Isla Bonita her 1st and 2nd). Cherish helped Madonna to win Top Adult Contemporary Artist on 1989 Billboard Music Awards.

Cherish features a black-and-white music video that was directed by Herb Ritts and was filmed in July 1989 at Paradise Cove Beach in Malibu, California. Madonna also used this beach location for her "The Power of Good-Bye" music video.

 

Herb Ritts was one of Madonna's preferred photographer and shot Madonna for the cover of her 1986 album True Blue. When she told Ritts she wanted him to direct the Cherish video, Herb tried to talk her out of it but she wanted him and he did it.

 

The video also features model Tony Ward, Madonna's then boyfriend. He makes his first appearance alongside Madonna in this video by playing one of the mermen. He has also appeared in the music videos for "Justify My Love" and "Erotica".

 

This video is Madonna's first of three black and white videos in a row (if you don't included Dear Jessie's) (Oh Father & Vogue were both done in black & white). Madonna performed this song on her 1990 Blond Ambition Tour while strumming a harp; her stage dancers were dressed as mermen. She hasn't performed it since 1990. She refused to perform it on the request section on the Sticky & Sweet Tour on some of the American shows.

One of my favourites from the 90's :wub: First heard it on a music channel, and loved it ever since! Such a happy track, I think :)

I adore Cherish, it's such a sweet song :wub: I'd find it hard to compile a Madonna top ten but this would have to be in there somewhere!

One of my ultimate feel-good anthems, and I've been hooked on it all over again recently too.

One of her best videos ever - i totally love the song and would love for another tour performance. I think Madonna struggles with singing this one though, i rememebr in an interview once that she was completely suprised how successful this song was and it was the recoed company that pushed for it to be a single!

Cherish is a really great beautiful song, I wish Madonna would perform it again sometime.
