OMG! Is this some kind of joke! I cannot believe how she has sucked everything out of this song. I thought alternative covers by mainstream artists was so last year.

Drivel!

I suppose some people might go on to listen to the NIN/Cash versions and realise how much better they are (especially the JC version.)

Is it just me, or is there nowhere near as much emotion in Johnny Cash's version either? Having listened to all three, the original by Nine Inch Nails is very good and is clearly very special to the singer in NIN. I do admit that Leona's is nowhere near as emotional, but out of the three it would be my preference due to my music tastes. But Johnny's doesn't have either of those appealing qualities. Very overrated.

Are you kidding? I would go as far as saying the Johnny Cash version has the most emotion in it, even more than the original. His wife died, (June) and the man died of a broken heart. If you compare his version to some of Cash's other tracks you can really hear the emotion in it. He connects to the song and there's such a sadness in his voice. Admittedly if you don't know the background behind Cash's life then it might not have the same effect but even so, this song has so much emotional power in it. But the emotion in this song is really all about his wife. Of course the song perhaps would not be remembered as much if Cash did not die very soon after recording the track. Watch the video for Johnny Cash's version. It's powerful stuff.

^this. in fact just to reiterate this is what Trent had to say about Johnny's version:

"I pop the video in, and wow... Tears welling, silence, goose-bumps... Wow. [i felt like] I just lost my girlfriend, because that song isn't mine anymore... It really made me think about how powerful music is as a medium and art form. I wrote some words and music in my bedroom as a way of staying sane, about a bleak and desperate place I was in, totally isolated and alone. [somehow] that winds up reinterpreted by a music legend from a radically different era/genre and still retains sincerity and meaning — different, but every bit as pure."

His version just doesn't do it for me. Alot of your opinions are based around the story behind his cover rather than just the cover itself. I wasn't aware of the song at the time of his death (I think I was about 6?) so I don't really connect with his story in the same way you might do.
Not feeling Johnny's version is just as much an opinion as not feeling Leona's. Tbh I don't really feel Leona's either, only NIN makes me feel any major emotion.

I am not trying to be a music snob at all, but even without the story to say you can't hear emotion in Johnny Cash's voice is plain deaf! I am sure you have heard Ring of Fire? Compare that to Hurt and you can see the difference between the vocals. His vocals in Hurt are so defining. It's a man who has admitted defeat in life. It's haunting.

I was only 11/12 the time the song was released originally and only heard it when I was 16/17 for the very first time. I am not even a huge Johnny Cash fan. I do like Leona Lewis, and she has a fantastic voice, but covering Hurt is going to touch a lot of people the wrong way. Even though it is not his song, it's the last memory a lot of people have of Johnny Cash.

I dunno if I worded my post wrong, or if this statement even makes sense, but I can hear emotion in Johnny's voice but it doesn't move me much at all, maybe it's just me and my heart of stone :P
All three songs on the EP are absolutely stunning, 'Hurt' in particular. The performance on The X Factor last night was beautiful as well, and I'm so happy this is looking to be a hit for Leona. :D

I don't think age has anything to do with it. I was only 11 at the time and was still majorly into my bubblegum pop at that time. I'm not a massive fan of Johnny Cash, I love some of his songs, Walk The Line is one of my favourite films but I would much rather hear his version of Hurt than Leona's. The overproduction, the messy arrangement just doesn't do anything for me. I still stand by the piano not working. His version is just so truly haunting. When I heard it, I didn't even know it was so soon after/before June's/his death. You don't need to know someone's back story to have an emotional connection with the song.

So thrilled with how well this is doing based on just one performance! :) She clearly connected with people and put herself right back in the game.

As someone who loves the original Nine Inch Nails version, I don't find her cover of 'Hurt' that offensive, it is however exceedingly bland but could've been worse. The real bad one is what she's done to 'Iris', probably even worse than her cover of 'Stop Crying Your Heart Out'.

It's a shame, she got it so right with 'Run' but she keeps trying and failing to emulate what she achieved with that.

Colorblind is definitely my favourite out of the 3.
I love all 3 tracks, so beautiful, I'm particularly loving 'Iris' at the moment!
I love all 3 tracks also! It's still #3 in midweeks today, Hope it can hold top 5 after RVP tonight. :D

I love Colourblind, just love the lyrics, vocals and paino, beautiful, as is Hurt. Those are my favourite of the 3, cant choose between them.

Hurt is still #7 on iTunes, I never expected it to go as high as #2 and it to still be top 10 on Wednesday is great, hopefully after another spine-tingling performance tonight on Royal Variety it'll manage to stay top 10.

I wish she'd get another #1 :( I was on youtube earlier and the comments on there are disgusting, saying she needs to be stabbed in the throat so she can't sing anymore! :o
