Sales in 2004 sucked! Not just below Top 40, I think it took just ~20,000 to reach the Top 3! (Top 5 if lucky!)
Clearly sales have risen dramatically especially in the lower end of the chart. i thought the average no1 sales in 2004 would have been alot lower than 70k, though i suppose the 4 weeks of sales for Bnad Aid 20 of over 200k will have done alot to push the average up!
Its kind of funny how it took illegal downloaders to shift the music industry into a more efficient form of distribution. The same way the pirate radio stations revolutioned the music industry.

completely agree. They should do more of it; make their model far superior and inclusive that people have even less incentive to illegally download to "try" a tune!

They have closed the tax VAT haven in the channel islands from next year i think which is a bad thing as cheap cds wont be available from play.com and amazon for a fiver which means record shops like hmv will beable to put cd prices up again if they want to a tenner - too little too late as ever from the big wigs!

The £5 CD won't disappear. It will perhaps take longer to discount. You can get Noah and the Whale's- Last Night on Earth and Tinie Tempah's- Disc-Overy for under £4 at Amazon now. That is the type of deal that will become the £5 CD.

I can't see how this is going to help retailers though. HMV itself is going through a bad time even with a thriving online business. This is just going to reduce profits for them even more and lead to more closures of stores. If HMV can't survive, there is no hope for the indies anyway.

ISTM that'll just drive more people to download albums instead.

I dont download at all - I go to youtube. I buy only one or 2 of albums a year on release date. I usually wait a while to hear what people have to say about an album before deciding and then I buy when I see it cheap.

I usually download albums, unless the artists are attractive... ;)

All I have is a Kylie calendar - but that was a present.

I haven't bought any albums at all in the past two years except Katy Perry's 'Teenage Dream' and P!nk's Greatest Hits, the latter of which was a Christmas present.

Considering back in 2004 time - I would spend the best part of £20 a week on new albums or singles says a lot. It's not that I think music has gotten worse, everything's on Spotify so I don't feel the need to waste my money when it could be used on other more important things. Maybe I'm an evil, evil person for not supporting the industry and such but I will now only buy an album if it is absolutely brilliant.

I think lowering album prices is the only way to try and boost the failing market. Yes it would be bad for the major supermarket chains/independent stores but they're going to slowly decline under Amazon and company anyway who are doing just that.

Seriously? :o In the past week I have bought 7

I think saving for a Masters and deciding that clothes and toiletries and heck food is more important than CDs plays a HUGE factor  Plus also like I said - a lot of content is available on Spotify if I really want to listen to an album. I still download songs from iTunes. ^_^

I never buy clothes :P not unless the ones I have are falling apart. Advantages of living at home and seeling alot of stuff on ebay I guess.

Could you do this for other years (all in comparison to 2011)?

Sorry, I don't have enough data - and I choose the extreme years specifically to illustrate the point.

How do you know that 2004 is the bottom end extreme year if you don't have the data for any of the other years?!
