20 Veronica Maggio - Satan I Gatan (Satan In The Streets)

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/1/16/Satan_i_Gatan.jpg/220px-Satan_i_Gatan.jpg

The first of two albums in this countdown to be entirely in a foreign language! This time that language happens to be Swedish. I first discovered Veronica earlier this year, when (I think I was) Pavel entered a gorgeous track from this album called Snalla Bli Min (Please Be Mine) into BJSC spin-off BJFestivalen, and soon after loving it I checked the album out. It's fantastic despite me not understanding a word she says :P It's a lovely mixture of eclectic pop, I'd reccomend this album to fans of pop/rock - especially the track Jag Kommer (I'm Coming) which has a great rock edge to it!

19 Ed Sheeran - +

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/f/fb/%20EdSheeran.jpg/220px-%20EdSheeran.jpg

I've known about Ed for a while now, and he definitely had that something interesting about him - so I was excited to hear a proper studio album from him. The most unlikely popstar of the year delivered with a great varied collection of 'acousti-hop' blended with elements of many genres such as folk. Ed sings, raps and beatboxes his way through his debut, showing he is multi-talented and knows how to craft a great, honest track or two.

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/3/3f/Selena_Gomez_When_the_Sun_Goes_Down.jpg/220px-Selena_Gomez_When_the_Sun_Goes_Down.jpg

Much like a certain lady appearing further down this list, poor Selena seems to be working her arse off! She's had 3 albums in as many years, this completing the trio. In the mere year since her last album, it appears Selena has done some growing up (musically anyway...) - as she returns with a sleek and sexy new electronic based dancey sound. Teen pop trailer single Who Says however is business as ever for Selena, a slightly twee yet uber catchy mid-tempo empowerment track about just being yourself and not caring what others think. Whiplash, her best track to date imo, is a huge electro-pop banger, while Middle Of Nowhere seems to borrow from Steps a bit (yes, I seriously just said that!) :o

17 Matt Cardle - Letters

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/8/8a/LettersMattCardle.jpg/220px-LettersMattCardle.jpg

When the hawtass X-Factor winner 2010 had prepared his debut album. there was a lot of pressure for him not follow the dreaded 'male winners curse' that had previously dispatched the careers of Steve Brookstein, Shayne Ward, Leon Jackson and (initially) Joe McElderry. 'Credible Cardle' stayed honest and crafted an album of pop/rock tracks that wouldn't be out of place on a Coldplay or Snow Patrol album - without being quite as dull as those two acts can be at times. There's not anything that beats his winner's single When We Collide in my eyes but Starlight stands out from the other tracks - an anthemic pop/rock tune with a rousing piano riff to match the huge chours.

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/5/55/21Adele.jpg/220px-21Adele.jpg

This lady has totally owned 2011, and her success is totally deserved. It's so bizzare to think of her last era, when Duffy wiped the floor with her - and now 2nd time round Duffy barely clears 100k and Adele sells 3 million in less than 12 months and has 2 US number 1s and a million selling single in the UK :o This is in a similar vein to 19, but still a natural progression. She can do upbeat soul-pop like Rumour Has It and Rolling In The Deep just as well as ballads like Someone Like You - proved by this album.

15 Beyonce - 4

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/c/c8/4_album_-_Beyonce.jpg/220px-4_album_-_Beyonce.jpg

Both Bey and fellow Child of the Destiny variety Kelly Rowland released new albums in 2011, and Beyonce definitely won the battle, as Kelly's album Here I Am was a HUGE disappointment. 4 however is a solid collection of varied R&B, from the Alicia Keys-esque Start Over, to the hip-hop infused Countdown, to the electronic Run The World (Girls), and Bey manages to pull off each style with ease. This album includes one of her best tracks to date, belting ballad I Was Here, and also has a massive hit in waiting in End Of Time.

Regina DEAD. Jenny from the block finally returned earlier this year with huge club banger On The Floor, her first single since relative flop era Brave's Hold It Don't Drop It (which missed top 40), and shot to number 1 in loads of countries around the world. This album, her best yet imo, followed it up with a good solid varied collection of everything from Caribean R&B (I'm Into You) to R&B ballads (Until It Beats No More) to electro-pop bangers (Papi). Even in her 40s, Jennifer shows she ain't giving up, following in Kylie and Madonna's footsteps of delivering amazing albums as they age!

X-Factor's brat of 2010 was the first to unveil her post-show music, with her hated (by most, yet loved by me!) single Swagger Jagger. Despite the hatred around it, it managed to hit number 1, and the album followed after a further top 3 single, the more positively received With Ur Love. To be honest, this album is pretty much what I expected from Cher, a half and half divide of credible, cocky pop-rap (including the dubstep laden Dub On The Track) and fun upbeat pop (including the grunt infused Want U Back and Busta Rhymes collab Grow Up). There was one surprise though, laid back acoustic track Beautiful People, which features Carolina Liar.

12 Demi Lovato - Unbroken

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/2/2f/Demi_Lovato_-_Unbroken.jpg/220px-Demi_Lovato_-_Unbroken.jpg

I've always found Demi is sadly overlooked when it comes to her music, because both Selena Gomez and of course Miley Cyrus have had quite a bit of success over here but Demi's only had 2 low top 40 singles and both albums missed the top 100 :( That's meant that her amazing track Skyscraper and this, her best album to date, hasn't been released over here :( This is a album where Demi turns a corner in her career. Gone is the teen-pop/rock and here is a more grown up pop/R&B sound.. Opener All Night Long is a mature yet flirty and playful pop club track, while Unbroken is a full on stellar electro-pop track. To mirror this, Demi pleads to her alcoholic father in the emotional ballad For The Love Of A Daughter and croons on R&B filler track My Love's Like A Star. Overall, this is a huge step in the right direction for Demi creatively with only one dud track!

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/6/6e/Femmefatale.jpg/220px-Femmefatale.jpg

Well even though she's had a troubled time recently (back on track in the past year or two thankfully), since her 'big comeback' from her lowest ebb Brit has done 3 stellar albums (her 3 best imo) - and this is one of them. Lead single Hold It Against Me is a throbbing electro-pop stomper with a dubstep breakdown and brought her back with a bang, giving her another US number 1 and a UK top 10. Sadly the other singles, amazing though they were, failed to gather similar UK success (Til The World Ends and I Wanna Go added 2 top 10s to her US porfolio however). Some of the songs (Drop Dead Beautiful is one offender) do venture into generic a bit but they are still mostly brilliant - only two duds on the whole album. Inside Out stands out in particular as adventuring out of the comfort zone.

10 Rihanna - Talk That Talk

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/0/09/Talk_That_Talk_-_Rihanna.jpg/220px-Talk_That_Talk_-_Rihanna.jpg

This lady just doesn't stop! This is her 6th album and the first was released in 2005, so she is busy indeed. But it obviously just doesn't take her long to be satisfied with quality, and this is another album that reaches the high standards set by previous albums like Rated R. Admittedly, this is her weakest album since A Girl Like Me, which maybe with the level of anticipation is a bit disappointing, and also there are a few duds, but thankfully the soaring highs more than make sure that this is another great album from the biggest Bajan on earth.

09 Nicole Scherzinger - Killer Love

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/2/24/Killer_Love_(album_cover).jpg/220px-Killer_Love_(album_cover).jpg

With no word from the Pussycat Dolls, it was time for Nicole Scherzinger's 467th attempt at a solo career. This time she actually got as far an album though, which was this current, poppy collection of songs. First single Poison is a huge electro stomper, and that was followed by UK number 1 Don't Hold Your Breath, a fantastic 'sad-disco' electro ballad moment. There are also a few ballads, such as the georgeous Desperate. Towards the end the tempo gets rather samey (too many ballads) but aside from that this is a solid collection!

08 Florence & The Machine - Ceremonials

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/f/fe/Ceremonials.png/220px-Ceremonials.png

After she unleashed her debut, Lungs, which topped the UK album charts and is in my top 10 albums of all time, anticipation was high for another album from this lady, and she finally delivered! Ceremonials ventures more into soul on tracks like Lover To Lover than Lungs did and is also on the whole slightly more poppy and accessible. Sadly this has done nowhere near as well as Lungs in the UK (or indeed worldwide), although Shake It Out and What The Water Gave Me both made top 20 (the former only did so after an X-Factor performance) and the album gave her a second number 1.

07 Cassandra Steen - Mir So Nah (So Close To Me)

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/0/09/Mir_so_nah.jpg/220px-Mir_so_nah.jpg

And this is the second foreign language album! This time it's over to Germany for some great soul/R&B. Reading up on her, it seems this era was viewed as a flop for

Cassandra and not a good comeback, and the brilliant lead single Gebt Alles flopped too. But this, the first album I discovered from her, is a solid R&B album - which to me is a genre often shaky on albums as I find them samey and boring at times - with a few varied elements. There's everything nice acoustic ballads (Soo) to subtle Katy B-esque garage beats in Symphonien.

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/1/12/InCaseYouDidn'tKnow.jpg/220px-InCaseYouDidn'tKnow.jpg

Not only is he THE sexiest man in the world, but he also does damn good music! After coming 2nd to Joe McElderry in 2009's X-Factor, Olly has made a name for himself with his bouncy reggae/ska tinged singles. He also proved winning isn't everything by practically the total of Joe's debut album doubled in his first week! Then this year he returned with the brilliant ska infused Heart Skips A Beat, his 2nd UK number 1, and then followed his 3rd number 1 Dance With Me Tonight and this brilliant album. It stays pretty much true to his roots, with a good natural progression in the sound all the same!

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/e/e8/SaturdaysOYR.png/220px-SaturdaysOYR.png

It's 'BRITAIN'S BIGGEST GIRLBAND' now, with their number 23 smash hit 3rd album! Yes, 3rd because no-one counts Headlines as an album... They may be still flopping and earning that title by default (though tbh they've already lost it since Little Mix are looking to probably looking to outsell The Sats' best selling single Ego in only 1/2 weeks of being on sale!), but blimey do they make great pop! This isn't quite their best album (Chasing Lights is in my top 10 of all time so will be hard to beat!) but it's arguably their most creative and varied. On tracks like All Fired Up, Notorious and Faster, the girls toy with a dancier sound than their previous work, while on tracks like For Myself they go all R&B on us. These are complimented by georgeous ballads in the form of My Heart Takes Over and Last Call, and this makes for a solid, varied pop album that shows they should be up there with Girls Aloud and Sugababes (2.0 and 3.0). Yep, I went there.

Another X-Factor runner-up, excpet her not winning wasn't quite as much as of a catastrophe because she was beaten by someone good (just not as good :smoke:). Anyway, it didn't hurt her given she sold almost 130k in one week! This album is a delightful old fashioned Motown sounding album - think Duffy's second album had it not turned out shockingly shit and you're there. Rebecca does upbeat soul-pop like Fairytale just as well as touching ballads like Teach Me How To Be Loved and acoustic R&B like Nothing's Real But Love. All this with an authentic old soul voice of an angel...

I definitely see what you are saying about WUL. But down there with EUH and BP!? No way! :( 2 of my absolute favourites ('End Up Here' being 3rd behind 'Want U Back' and 'Grow Up' - obvz ;P probably with 'Beautiful People' in 4th! Aha.) Such a strong album though. I thought I'd tire of it as I was worrying it was "too novelty-like" and thought it would irritate me quicker, but I'm not getting bored of it, at all!

03 Kelly Clarkson - Stronger

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/c/ca/Kelly_Clarkson_-_Stronger.jpg/220px-Kelly_Clarkson_-_Stronger.jpg

Starting off the top 3, it's my favourite singer of all time! It's been 2 years since her album All I Ever Wanted, so it was great to not have too long of a wait for this, and she definitely delivered yet again! It's all the better given it's a mixutre of My December and Breakaway in sound - and they're two of my top 5 albums ever. First single Mr Know It All is a brilliant, yet worringly generic, pop/R&B midtempo number, but the rest of the album sees Kelly back to her usual pop/rock diva status with What Doesn't Kill You (Stronger) and Dark Side. A particular standout is Hello, an uptempo track infused with soul yet still keeping Kelly's pop/rock roots.

This album was a LOOOOOOOOOOONG time coming, but clearly you can't rush perfection! Dirty Talk has been around an age and I was pretty much wishing for an album not long after I first heard it, sadly the UK release was a year too late so it missed top 20, and as a result the album hasn't even been released here :( Thankfully Australia appreciate her so she had somewhere to release an album! This is a must for any pure-pop fans who've missed it, it is honestly a real gem of a dance-pop album and isn't too generic either.

Well you all knew it was coming :P Of course this is number 1, what else could it have plausibly been? Gaga promised 'the album of the century' and honestly she was pretty damn close! I had anticipation like never before for this album, especially given I played lead single Born This Way 60odd times in a day, and the follow-up Judas even more! Two promo singles (fan favourite Edge Of Glory and uplifitng personal favourite Hair) trailed the album as well and built hype to new levels. When it was finally released, Born This Way proved Gaga's status as the world's most exciting popstar with a faultless collection of edgy and creative pop. Not a single dud over 14 tracks (on the standard edition), this is a musthave for anyone who likes pop (or even if you don't :P) - it is up there with the best albums I have ever heard...
