I think people are massively overplaying the Giftcard effect, there's no doubt it exists but it's not *that* big.

Last year there was only 5 re-entries into the top 40:

35 42 18 The Saturdays feat. Flo Rida Higher

36 56 44 Tinie Tempah Pass Out

38 45 12 Duck Sauce Barbra Streisand

39 44 18 Olly Murs Please Don't Let Me Go

40 48 13 B.o.B feat. Rivers Cuomo Magic

replacing the 5 seasonal songs which were in the chart, apart from Tinie all ones which were only just outside the top 40 anyway and all of them only got in at the lower end! It was mainly all just natural climbs. It'll obviously be a bit more this year because of the larger amount of seasonal songs in the top 40, but talk of Maroon 5 top 5, LMFAO top 10 and 3 Adele tracks in the top 40 seems a bit far fetched to me. The biggest climbs within the top 40 were for 'Dynamite' and 'Love The Way You Lie', up 10 places from 39 & 37, both of them overtaking the 5 Xmas songs.

The giftcard effect should be looked at in terms of the boost in overall sales - which obviously cannot be seen from chart positions alone.

I'll bump up my analysis thread again.

I'm happy you don't consider me as part of 'the older generation' ;) - but I was thinking more of sales from those who weren't already Bowie fans...

He was making a generalization. People from all walks of life download, but obviously some more than others.

Tyler The Creator is a c**t

You don't like him?! :( A lot of people hate him because he's ugly and has a weird voice, but those things aren't really his fault.

Exactly, thanks. I don't know if the clip will have made new fans tbh. It was a good one, but if you hadn't heard of or you didn't like Bowie by now I can't understand how that would make you. (For the record I love him )

As for Tyler, it's not that, it's the homophobia. Have you seen how much he uses the terms f***** and gay (as in stupid) on Twitter? Then again I had to change the words to Fairytale Of New York to "braggart" at karaoke the other night so idk, maybe I'm too sensetive

Good job it wasn't a rap song...

Yeah, he uses those words a lot. Although I don't think he uses them to refer to gay people, I think they're just like generic insult words to him. And it seems like every couple of weeks someone in the media calls him homophobic, so I think it maybe just motivates him to use those words even more, since it's making him more famous.

But if he wasn't a c**t, it would motivate him to think about his actions, think that he might be upsetting people and maybe think about stopping it...
Nope, we're not at 50 pages.

I'm really glad Lloyd is hanging around. :D

It's become one of my favourite songs in the top 40 at the moment. Such an infectious track!

Yeah love it too. THAT'S how you do R&B/hip hop.

The gift card efffect is to do with sales - the no40 sinlge sells around 8k copies on a average week, on the gift card week - the no75 sells that much. The whole top 40 sell well over 10k!!

I think the effect is likely to be bigger than normal this year anyway because there's a chart week that covers the 25th to the 31st, which should be the peak for gift card activity. Last year they were only that high the previous week because a day of gift cards (and theoretically the peak day, assuming most people use their gift cards immediately) had sneaked into the Saturday of the previous week. Plus as you say there are far more seasonal entries that will drop straight out of the top 40.

Maybe M5 top 5, LMFAO top 10 and 3x Adele top 40 may be a bit overestimating but I can certainly see M5 back in the top 10, LMFAO top 20 and at least SLY and SFTTR back in the top 40.

Not really. Viewers probably weren't that high, and the older generation aren't really into downloading.

2.6 M, highest rated show on BBC2 last night and higher than the Westlife show last week on ITV1.

 47 Jessie J - Domino

Domino is doing great, I've been hearing it a lot on Capital FM recently!

 131 The Saturdays - All Fired Up

It's good to see them climbing back up the chart now it's 59p!

Oh fair enough, I'm planning to watch it but was out at a gig (The Feeling ) and Sky+ed it.

Yeah love it too. THAT'S how you do R&B/hip hop.

Very true. That T-Pain shit shouldn't be defined as R&B/Hip Hop.
