Posted December 19, 201113 yr Christmas Number 1 winner to receive new award Source: MW 09:48 | Monday December 19, 2011 The winners of this year’s Official Christmas Number 1 will become the first recipients of a new award from The Official Charts Company. The Official Singles Chart Number 1 Award will mark the 60th anniversary of the UK’s Official Singles Chart in 2012 and is backed by BBC Radio 1, Olly Murs, The Wanted, Professor Green and Emeli Sande. It will be presented to recognise every new Official Number 1 single from Sunday 25th December onwards and will be handed over by the OCC in partnership with BBC Radio 1’s Official Chart Show. “It means everything for an artist to get a Number 1 single,” said Olly Murs, who has scored three Official Number 1 singles and one Number 1 album to date. “When you release a record, to have people love it and buy into it, and see it at the top of the tree is the best feeling in the world. And now for there to be an award for it - even better!” “For all artists, reaching Number 1 in the Official Singles Chart continues to be the pinnacle of success in the UK. But, until now, they have never had a tangible reminder of this achievement,” said OCC managing director Martin Talbot. “That is what the Official Singles Chart Number 1 Award is all about. We are delighted to be working with Radio 1 to make sure that every week’s Official Number 1 announcement from now on is extra special.” ''Being Number 1 on The UK’s Official Singles Chart is still one of the ultimate goals for any self-respecting pop star and the chart remains hugely popular with Radio 1's young audience,” added BBC Radio 1’s Head of Music George Ergatoudis. “With the launch of the Official Singles Chart Number 1 Award, artists will finally have something physical to recognise their achievement and Reggie Yates and Greg James are looking forward to handing them over.''
December 19, 201113 yr ...and Greg James? Why would he hand them over if he only does the midweek chart? Is he being lined up to take over from Reggie?

You know what this means, though - every record company is going to hold back new material as long as possible, to maximise the chances of #1 (even more than they do now, I mean)...
December 19, 201113 yr Totally shit idea. It somehow implies that the singles chart is the barometer of what is popular when it's really only a measure of marketing budgets, tv/radio exposure and teenage hormones. I also dont like the idea of an award for something based on sales (just like the Brit Awards, mostly) - hasn't it already been awarded enough? Edited December 19, 201113 yr by tonyttt31
I agree with some of this actually. I'd argue that Military Wives' Choir's song isn't as 'popular' as say Olly Murs or Coldplay, just because it's going to outsell them in one week. Because it's the connatations of the charity that's getting it there, not the music. Obviously some people do like the song and that's great, but I'd argue a huge proportion don't and just want to either derail X-Factor or give money to the charity (which of course is good but you can just donate and not buy a song you don't even want). Also if you look at number 1s like Nero, X-Factor Finalists and others, they haven't sold anywhere near as much as (for example) Rolling In The Deep which only made number 2. Why should they get an award for being frontloaded to the max? Also, last year, when Eminem topped the year end chart 2010 with Love The Way You Lie, it only peaked at 2 in the chart. And yet he wouldn't get this pointless 'award' even though the song was more popular than all the other songs that got it that year.
December 19, 201113 yr I agree with most people that this idea isn't good, expect JLS' single 1 from their fourth album to go 1-3-14-30-OUT and Nero's next single to go 1-17-40-OUT. I don't like the fact that songs will be so front loaded if the record company want that award desperately :drama:
December 19, 201113 yr Author I could also argue the point on behalf of Maroon 5 when they were stuck at #2 for 7 weeks, the track is far more superior than Dappy, JLS, One Direction, etc etc. I can't see the point in it. Also this smells of the number 1 track changing week on week just to get the blinking award, eejits.

This is about the third thread you've said this on, without as much as a shred of evidence. Other people like different music to you - get over it.
December 19, 201113 yr Oh yeah, Maroon 5 is another good example. That looks like it'll sell 1 million by year end, and if the award existed now they'd have missed out despite this.

Perhaps you should get over the fact people DON'T like it. Anyway, I said 'I'd argue' because you can't prove it. It's just my theory, which last time I checked it was fine to express. In fact I think the award should be given to the best selling single that never got to number 1 each year. Edited December 19, 201113 yr by tonyttt31
December 19, 201113 yr ...and is backed by BBC Radio 1, Olly Murs, The Wanted, Professor Green and Emeli Sande... People who had fairly forgettable number ones and would quite like an award?
December 19, 201113 yr ...and is backed by BBC Radio 1, Olly Murs, The Wanted, Professor Green and Emeli Sande... People who had fairly forgettable number ones and would quite like an award? TO BE FAIR, Read All About It, Heart Skips a Beat and Glad You Came are all in the year-end top 40... And I think they're good songs too. I think this will just convince artists to hold back the songs to get the #1 though. They should give out awards to songs/artists when they sell 500,000 imo.
December 19, 201113 yr Completely insane idea. It's far better to reward for total sales than peak chart position. I agree with what someone else said, that we could possibly end up with 52 number 1's a year now.

There were a whole 40 memorable hits this year?
December 19, 201113 yr so EVERY number 1 gets an award from now on? it seems pretty ridiculous, the sales should be rewarding enough, if they're gonna give out awards, I agree that it should be to the big sales hits, rather than every single number 1
December 19, 201113 yr It's ridiculous to call HSAB and GYC 'forgettable', they may not quite be among the biggest hits of the year but they've still both been very sizeable hits (and both have received a lot of airplay). RAAI maybe, it sold loads in its first 2 weeks but hasn't done so well since then and is already out of the top 40. This #1 award thing is a bit ridiculous, surely it's already pretty much an 'award' to get there in the first place? Once you get there it's permanently engraved in the history of the charts. And it is just going to encourage held-back releases even more and lead to more non-#1s than ever before. 'We Found Love' could end up being the last long-running #1 ever :( (Nah, I doubt that, but long-running #1s have only recently started to return to the chart and now they're just going to go away again...) December 19, 201113 yr Yes - Maroon 5 have sold more than all but one of the year's #1's... Rolling In The Deep has also outsold all but 6 of them. And The A Team has outsold all but 7 of them and that didn't even go top 2!
