Glad You Came is pretty forgettable imo. People will just remember Stereo Love in the future.

They should do it to songs which reach certain sales figures (like the Silver, Gold certifications). But they should only do it with songs released within the past 12 months or something, or else they'll be randomly giving awards to songs from the 1970's or whatever which are trickle-selling, which would be a bit weird.

I barely remember Stereo Love now. (And I still don't get the comparison between SL and GYC).

Well, do you remember On the Floor by Jennifer Lopez?

I'm going on a tangent now, but this is all such a shame, from the perspective of the europop artists. All the kids brought up in America will think it's "black music", since the RnB artists and rappers have basically claimed that sound now. Similar with dubstep.

Yes, I do remember On The Floor. I don't get the comparison between that and SL either. I really think Stereo Love sounds nothing like either of them beyond all 3 being dance songs.

Seriously? :o Stereo Love and On the Floor in particular, sound so similar in multiple sections.

On the Floor also sounds like Show Me Love/Don't Wanna Go Home.

Type in Stereo Love On the Floor into Youtube or something, and you get HUNDREDS of videos. They're almost the same.

This is hilarious!!!

So what happens if in 2012 every UK #1 has masive first week sales and tails off sharply selling barely 300k in total, yet there's a whole list of "near misses" that peak at #2/#3/'4 selling closer to 900k. Will any of them win awards for being GENUINE hits?

This is as bad as the Record Of The Year award when it was televised on ITV. -_- It's also a complete and utter waste of money having these "awards" created for the class of 2012 who might not even have a pop career in 2013.

There's a clear comparison of Stereo Love, Glad You Came and On the Floor - there's an accordion type sound prominently used in all three.

I think it's a BIT MUCH to say On The Floor is 'almost the same' as Stereo Love, but there are clear similarities between them and Glad You Came.
I don't really see that this makes much difference. I can't imagine getting a little trophy thing is going to matter much to artists, if they were THAT bothered then they'll already be holding back their single to maximise their first week sales to get #1 anyway.
I dontn think its a bad idea if it gets everyone interested in the no1 again although like some have said above it will lead to more holding back, but i still think only the uk artists will hold back - the bigger and non-uk artists will release as OA/OS releases!
I don't get this "it is rubbish, awards should be made on the basis of overall sales" (paraphrasing!) talk, those sort of awards already exist - gold/silver discs.
  • 2 weeks later...

They should have a physical Million-Seller Award rather than an official Number One Award. I really hope we don't get a huge run of one-week-wonders. :(

I don't think this is a great idea but I doubt it'll have *that much* effect on the charts.

A possible advantage to us may be that artists will also want their post-album release singles getting to the top spot so maybe they'll be reduced to 59p in future. I can see that happening with JLS' third singles (and possibly 2nd singles) in particular.

I don't think certifications keep up with the achievements do they? I know The Fame is like 7x Platinum but only certificated 4x according to the BPI

First is a pop song, the second is a dance song. I like both and will remember both for different reasons.

That's due to the record company either not requesting certification or not supplying the audited figures to the BPI.
