Why do these airplay totals always differ slightly to the figures which Billboard posts?

 

That's coz Billboard doesn't count some stations, on Mediabase panel is e.g. 100 stations but on Soundscan panel 85 stations something like that.

not sure about that, only when billboard post some updates on weekly article.

On Billboard's website they have a lot of radio charts; and overall one, and then seperate ones for each genre. But they only post them weekly rather than daily, and they don't give you the airplay figures, just the rankings/positions.

It can't be too long until she catches Rihanna either but it's another long way to Carly and even further to Payphone. He's rising well on Pop right now, he's at 10.205 (+0.510) which is great and if you combine that with all the other formats he's top 50 on (Alternative, HAC + Triple A), he's on 21.355 (+0.868) today which is actually shockingly good! Might end up being a radio hit after all.

I would say Chasing The Sun has underperformed far more than One Thing. Glad You Came was far bigger than What Makes You Beautiful on radio so you'd expect the same to happen again. Plus radio has actually given Chasing The Sun decent support considering nobody wanted to buy the song until like, this week (it gained for quite a while and hasn't fallen significantly despite the iTunes stagnation). One Thing's radio floppage is rather annoying considering it's been doing really well on iTunes but overall I'd say it was the far bigger hit of the two second singles (or at least has been so far, one or both of them could still take off properly yet!).

I agree, same with Where Have You Been and Scream, all those songs are getting far more radio airplay than they deserve. It's like the music industry are desperate to turn them into hits, but they're just stalling at #10 on iTunes for weeks while they get those sky-high radio updates each day. One thing that all three of those songs share in common is that they cross over to rhythmic radio, so get extra radio airplay (the reason being because the vocalists are black).

 

And then you get songs like Some Nights which climb into the top 10 on iTunes when they're on like 20 million AI. I think it's a bit unfair tbh. I think pop radio will eventually cave in and adjust to the new musical trends in the charts, it'll just take some time. I can see signs of it happening already, as if you look at that Kworb website, there's quite a few alternative songs crossing over to pop radio lower down its chart, and even a couple, such as Linkin Park's song, have been a hits on rock radio. And rock/pop crossover hits have been very rare during the past 5 years.
