13 'Grew up at Midnight'

I've loved both of their albums and this one has been getting some pretty strong reviews. To me, they've always been a band that has the potential to be big but they've never quite reached it. Maybe they will this time around?

Loving their new logo!

On my first listen now, eeee.

This album is glorious! I knew I'd like it but not this much!

'Grew Up at Midnight' is especially wonderful - it's like 'Spanish Sahara' mixed with Bon Iver and other amazing things. So damn good.

I've never really paid attention to this lot before, but I checked out 'Pelican' and approved so gave the album a go this morning - it is very good! I got into more in the second half, but that might just've been me getting acclimatized to the sound of it. 'Grew Up at Midnight' was indeed wonderful - also loved 'Forever I've Known', really keen emotion in the vocals and the rolling beat is fantastic.
Never even listened to these before but this is GOOD! Having a bit of a discovery evening today (anything to avoid the prospect of IMMINENT EXAMS)
They're definitely getting better as a band, liking this quite a bit. Although I'm not sure I'll ever like anything as much as 'About Your Dress'.

I've always had a soft spot for The Maccabees. I sort of think if they released their debut album 18 months earlier they would have been huge. That was never the case. Even though a lot of their material is pretty strong, and Toothpaste Kisses was used on an advert they never really took off. I heard the album sampler before Christmas and I just thought they tried to sound like Coldplay. That's not a bad thing. A couple of reviews I've read have also picked up on the same ideas. This album is make or break for them on the label they're currently on I think, unfortunately.

Definitely going to give the album a download and a listen at some point though, really do like The Maccabees.

I really like "Pelican", and I loved their collab. with Roots Manuva in 2010 "Empty Vessels" (which was based on "No Kind Words"). Not heard the album yet tho.

Unknow is such a brilliant song isn't it. What a great album.

This is by far my favourite song on the album. A thing of wonder.

They've announced they're breaking up :(

This is the most recent thread I could find about them! Was sure there would've been one for 'Marks to Prove It' but I couldn't find one. Can't say they've ever been an absolute favourite of mine but I've always had a soft spot for them. Sad they're breaking up – four great albums!

Aw this is kinda sad. I never really took interest in anything post-second album (and neither have really aged well) but it takes me back to a nice place nevertheless.
Was sad to hear this - quite unexpected tho I can't say I followed their social media or anything. Given to the Wild was a real underrated highlight of its year and they've always had a very tuneful, beguiling sound - hope they go on to bring this feeling to any future individual projects <3

I've got their first Top 40 hit “First Love” on CD single from almost TEN years ago!

Great band, particularly live - and I saw them as recently as last month headlining at Latitude. Sad they have called it a day as they have been getting steadily better with each album and have built up a collection of really good tracks. I loved Marks to Prove It which was a real grower. Ah, well - all good things must come to an end..
