I genuinely hope people don't nominate Veronica Maggio, Chart Music, etc. for the best INDIE entry. Because, at this rate, Charice would also be eligible for that award.

Chart Music? It's electro-pop and I never claimed otherwise!

The only 2011 entries of mine that could be considered indie are Sadness Is A Blessing and Vaporous although they're moreso Wall of Sound style pop and trip-hop. Indie's such an umbrella term though which could mean a lot of different things depending on your own interpretation of the genre. The Weeknd, Marina & The Diamonds and Ed Sheeran sit alongside each other in the indie forum here but they're R&B, pop and singer/songwriter respectively, granted with a different aesthetic to their contemporaries in said genres but at which point do they cross the line to become 'indie'?

I know you didn't, just thought some people could think that :o
Which of your 2011 entries do you consider to be 'indie' out of interest Pavel? :o

Orka & Eivør, The Irrepressibles, Win Win and Gold Panda.

I can definitely see Chart Music being nominated for Best Indie Entry, but I really wouldn't class it as indie myself.

Do you think any will stand a chance to win the Best Indie Entry? What are you expecting to be shortlisted for/win the category overall? :o

I'm expecting it to be the usual suspects - Video Games, Riverside, Somebody That I Used To Know etc...are these songs indie? Because they could also be seen as two piano ballads and an acoustic pop song. It was very hard to know what to nominate for this category for the blurred lines of the genre :drama:

Looking back at my nominations, I can safely say that all my nominations for 'Best Indie Entry' would definitely be placed in that catergory! The catergory I found hardest to nominate in was 'Best Scandi Entry' as I really had no idea who was and wasn't from Scandanavia

I have no idea  I suspect SX and Bon Iver will get enough nominations. There was hardly any indie songs sent in 2011. :(

I'd personally say that Video Games and Riverside are more indie than Somebody That I Used to Know, but they are still more piano pop ballads with an indie touch.

Another that was down to interpretation. Should I nominate the best 'Scandipop' style entry, or should I nominate any entry hailing from Finland, Iceland, Sweden, Norway or Denmark? I found a good balance in the end I think by doing a bit of both.

Where does the line appear that something becomes 'more indie'? It's something I've always wondered with the genre because most of the stuff in the indie forum just sounds like a variation of pop to me (pop that isn't generic/cheesy that is!). If Riverside was indie, could the same be said for Someone Like You? :o

I think I based mine on entries that actually came from Scandanavia that could be classed as pop. I found it really hard to distinguish those who did and didn't fit that classification.

I guess lyrics play big role. Someone Like You is a plain pop ballad with next to no catchy qualities while Riverside is much more sophisticated and therefore harder to get into.

No catchy qualities? It was a worldwide #1 and the biggest seller of 2011 in the UK :o And the lyrics were critically acclaimed weren't they?

Is Birdy indie? Or does she become excluded from the indie genre because her entire output is covers and/or because she's only 14 years old? They're piano ballad covers of lyrically sophisticated songs after all! I can't remember which forum her topic is in on BJ (if she even has one!).

ALL THOSE QUESTION MARKS! I'm not an indie specialist, if there is one at all, you know

Birdy can f***ing die (figuratively), to be honest. I am not sure that exclusively making covers of other people's work for money is what true 'indie' artists are all about. For me, you're indie if you don't aim for chart number ones and mega success. I like to think such people still exist. Naïve, I know :(

You're as close as we have in the BJSC forum, I need answers! :P

What are Ed Sheeran and Lana Del Rey doing in the indie forum then? :o And over half of the artists in there come to think of it!

Ed Sheeran and Lana Del Rey appeared there before they were even released in the UK. Ed Sheeran I wouldn't classify as 'indie' personally. He's shit too. And Lana Del Rey just had been hyped up to no end. After so much exposure on the internet anyone could get signed.

Indie means indpendent after all so I guess indie refers to those who so far don't have the backing of a major label (as Ed/Lana indeed didn't when their first topics appeared on Buzzjack). But you can see why it's difficult for people to class what qualifies as an indie entry. Is indie a 'sound' or is it a term to refer to any unsigned acts that don't fall within pop/dance/R&B?

Either way, I can see major label stars like Gotye/Kimbra and Veronica Maggio being amongst the most likely of getting the nod in this category!
