January 21, 201213 yr I'd hardly say it's indie/alternative - at least not in the sense that it's obscure in any way. I'd say it's one of very few songs from its year that's still fondly remembered for being a genuinely good song. I can't say I'm excited to hear Marcus's version, but I'm not going to judge it before I've heard it.
January 22, 201213 yr Since when does indie/alternative = obscure??? And how on earth are White Stripes not indie/alternative??? Ye Gods!
January 22, 201213 yr that cover is very good actually :o I love the original too, although that sounds SO suited to Marcus that its basically just gonna sound the same as that version? which seems a bit pointless, but I'll wait to hear it first
January 22, 201213 yr And that version of SNA completely sucks. Still not as bad as Fell In Love With A Boy. But I've got a feeling Marcus' will be. I love it and Joss' cover of FILWAB is one of my all time favourite songs, its just so smooth and soulful.
January 22, 201213 yr Does anyone know who he is signed to? It all seems rather quick. Although, I guess it is better to take advantage of his raised profile.
January 23, 201213 yr its just so smooth and soulful. And that is exactly what's wrong with it. Any rough edges sandblasted into oblivion. Brilliant song though.
January 23, 201213 yr I am so disappointed. I always knew it would go one of two ways for Marcus - develop his own sound and craft out a niche for himself ala Olly Murs, or the predictable, easy covers route. I hoped working with Gary Barlow would push him towards the former but covering a modern classic is an AWFUL way to start your career, whether his album is full of original hits (I doubt it) or not.
January 24, 201213 yr So true, I mean look at run for your life... I don't even think Gary Barlow is that good a song writer. Matt Cardle pushed for that single, Gary had it lying around and offered it to Matt who connected with it. Agree with everything said above, Gary Barlow is a fantastic songwriter. He has sold millions of records and has written some fantastic songs and wrote fantastic albums. I am so disappointed. I heard that Gary Barlow hasn't written on the album but is working in a more executive producer way where he probably calls a few people up to put Marcus in the right direction depending on where he wants his solo work to go and then sits back till he gets a copy of the album on his desk. Personally I can see Barlow's involvement being just him listening to the album and tightening up areas of the lyrics and production. Im not happy with the single choice, but saying that it definately fits Marcus' niche. Mother's Day will always generate sales so the release date is pretty well considered. Hope his second single is an original as I cant see this one getting the airplay Edited January 24, 201213 yr by jay727
January 24, 201213 yr http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/music/s103/the...-recession.html If I've read correctly, it seems like Marcus has actually written a lot of the album (with Barlow). He says it "may seem quick to some people" but he's been in lockdown in the studio since January 1st.
January 24, 201213 yr Apparently there are only three covers on the album - 'Seven Nation Army', 'Higher and Higher' and 'Tightrope'. Someone has said this on DS. I don't know how reliable it is though.
January 24, 201213 yr Tightrope? Would that be a Janelle Monae cover? :o I like Marcus but I'm not having him ruin that... Higher and Higher is a nice touch though. At least it's not a full on cover album anyway!
January 24, 201213 yr Tightrope? Would that be a Janelle Monae cover? :o I like Marcus but I'm not having him ruin that... Higher and Higher is a nice touch though. At least it's not a full on cover album anyway! I would laugh if it is a cover of the Stephanie McIntosh song
January 24, 201213 yr I would laugh if it is a cover of the Stephanie McIntosh song That would be an even worse fit
January 24, 201213 yr But if he is leading with a cover then is it cause he has no faith in an original being good enough?
January 24, 201213 yr Author But if he is leading with a cover then is it cause he has no faith in an original being good enough? It's SyCo leading the project isn't it. They probably think it's a good move. Releasing in Mother's Day will mean the album will probably go platinum, happy days for SyCo.
January 24, 201213 yr Tightrope? Would that be a Janelle Monae cover? :o I like Marcus but I'm not having him ruin that... Higher and Higher is a nice touch though. At least it's not a full on cover album anyway! Yeah it is a Janelle Monae cover. And Rooney, I think he's signed to RCA. Not 100% sure though.
January 27, 201213 yr OMG, it's actually a PARODY how much of a copy Marcus's version is of the version RFC posted further up!
January 27, 201213 yr OK... I was a Marcus supporter on the XF last year. Just listened to the single for the first time... And I have to say i'm really a massive fan tbh. The retro thing is ok - but for me his better performances on the show weren't in this niche. The organ noise in the song is very offputting and the whole thing seems a bit rushed tbh. I cant see this doing well... such a shame that he couldn't develop his own kinda niche/ style and not go down a cover for the 1st single (even if it is different from the original).
