What effect do you think having a rapper as a featured artist on a dance/R&B/MOR/etc. song has - beneficial or not?

I raise this question mainly because of Alyssa Reid's new song.

I haven't voted (yet), as you can surely guess what my answers will be...

I voted 'slight improvement' and 'slightly more likely'. I like a rap on a song - however with Alyssa Reid's new song the rap verses takes away Alyssa's lovely voice, so I'm tempted to go on the Australian store and buy the alternate mix from there. Jump Smokers is a very average rapper imo, don't like him that much tbh.

There are some good songs with raps dropped in them, such as Tinie Tempah on Earthquake and Andre 3000 on Dedication To My Ex :D I probably wouldn't have bought Nicole Scherzinger's Right There if it wasn't for 50 Cent, but I grew to love Nicole's verses as well as the rap. Same thing with Rihanna's Whats My Name, Drake made me notice the song and love it a lot

I haven't heard one song that has been improved by adding a rap part.

The same also rings true for rap songs that have a singer as featured - e.g. Love The Way You Lie.

Rap songs and sung songs - each have their own merit but keep them apart please.

I just realised I won't be able to see the poll results if I don't vote (who thought up *that* rule), so I'd better do so...
Actually there isn't much of a rap on Alyssa's single I can live with it, but I love the original by Heart its a classic.

Even a little is too much for me. :drama:

I couldn't remember who the original was by - thanks for the memory jog. :)

It depends!

Some songs like E.T it completely ruins, on Alone Again, it helps fill the song out a bit more, sometimes, like on JLS - Eyes Wide Shut and Alexandra Burke - All Night Long, its inoffensive but pointless, on some songs like Olly Murs ft. Rizzle Kicks - Heart Skips A Beat and Trey Songz ft. Nicki Minaj - Bottoms Up, I don't think I could listen to the song WITHOUT the rap there, the rest of those songs aren't bad, but the rap greatly improves them.

So I'm going to answer no difference, as it really depends on the rap, so I'm taking an average...

It's really impossible to generalise, as it completely depends on the song in question.

Indeed. Just taking one rapper from two songs last year. For me, Tinie Tempah's rap in 'Earthquake' stops it from being a great single, however his rap in 'Eyes Wide Shut' helps it become by far JLS' best song.

It depends.

The Nicki Minaj and Ke$ha version of 'Til The World Ends (even though the latter isn't a rapper) as well as the P Reign version of Alyssa Reid's Alone Again (as opposed to the 'Part 2' of just her singing) are better than the solo versions imo. However, Katy Perry is an example of how not to do it. The Kanye version of E.T., Missy Elliot's bit of Last Friday Night and B.o.B.'s addition to The One That Got Away are all awful.

I also don't mind if it's an 'inoffensive' addition like Pitbull in On The Floor or Nicki Minaj in Fireball, or the examples Eyes gave. I also agree with him on Bottoms Up, Nicki's part totally makes the song and I wouldn't listen without it.

as others have said, it depends

most of the time I get used to the added rap verse and sometimes it can offer a nice touch or some quotable lyrics ('Back it up like tonka truck' for example  ), sometimes its just 'there' and I have little opinion of it (B.o.B's part in Price Tag comes to mind) and others it just feels needless, Cher Lloyd comes to mind in both 'With Ur Love' and 'Want U Back', also I've never been keen on Wiz Khalifa's part in Bright Lights Bigger City, especially when its over those violins :(

all in all, it doesn't really affect me buying it though as I can put up with it as it only lasts about 30 seconds :P

The fact that there's no "it varies" option shows how INCREDIBLY generalising you are about anything vaguely hip hop-related. It's like asking: "Guitars on any song, ever. LOVE or HATE?".
Had to go with 'No Difference' for both options. It totally varies from song to song, there's no definitive answer.
Really depends, I agree. When it's on an R&B song (by someone like Ashanti, or Beyoncé) it can really do the song good. On pop songs I don't usually like it tbh.

I did *try* to be objective in my options, but admittedly I never considered an 'it varies' choice.
