Japan is certainly up there - I read that a song in Japan sold something ridiculous like a million copies in a week?

That happens really really often I think. They hold stuff back a lot I think and so they get stuff selling upwards of 500k like all the time. I think the record is around 2 million.

Surprising given their population is 25% bigger than ours - I'd expect a #1 to be selling 100k most weeks really. It interests me how population relates to sales in different countries - for instance, the US' population is about 5x that of the UK but the sales threshold for a platinum album is only 3.3x ours. Album sales full stop are horrendously down on those in the UK, probably because a far lower percentage of their population buys "contemporary" or "popular" music.

I know the population is higher in Germany, but traditionally the UK is the most "music friendly" country, what I mean here, in the UK are the most music bought compared to their population.

With the certifications you can also get an impression what could be the difference:

Singles in the UK:

Silver: 200,000

Gold: 400,000

Platinum: 600,000

Singles in the Germany:

Silver: -

Gold: 150,000

Platinum: 300,000

Albums in the UK:

Silver: 60,000

Gold: 100,000

Platinum: 300,000

Albums in Germany:

Silver: -

Gold: 100,000

Platinum: 200,000

All based on shipments.

Albums might be close in the two countries though the UK album sales are falling quickly

This must have been the report that Bré read, although I can't really believe it because 2-3 years ago Germany was way behind the UK in terms of music sales. I can think of the albums make the difference:

BTW Adele's 21 went 5 times platinum in Germany, that means 1mio based on shipments, but I beleive the sales of her album reached a million too.

Here's in an intersting article about the German music sales of 2011: http://www.billboard.biz/bbbiz/charts-arti...005909952.story

When I went to the US, one thing that struck me was that there was music playing literally EVERYWHERE I went, and often it was pretty loud aswell. So perhaps if you live there, you feel less need for music, since it seemed the only place I could go and not hear music playing was at home. In the UK you hear music in the odd clothes shop or whatever, but we don't go so far as to have it playing on public transport or in open outdoor spaces or anywhere else usually. So maybe people feel more need to buy music of their own here.

Maybe that's part of the reason. I don't know really.

Also I missed the discussion about UK acts going to the US. :( I have faith in Cher anyway.

They played One Direction's 'What Makes You Beautiful' on E! News yesterday in the US. That's a good sign for them. I wish we were sending the better stuff overseas though.

They UK is lucky we can sustain our own entertainment business that is part of the global market. Few countries can do that significantly, fewer that aren't anglophone

I read that Example got signed to a US record label a while ago aswell. His songs would do well there I think.

I think if anything that would encourage more sales, you don't really see music fatigue as such. The 'weekend effect' occurs because people have been bombarded with music at high volumes for hours on end at night and the next day they actually want to hear it more.

I think with the US it's mainly because it's such a hugely divided and (compared to here at least) sparsely populated country. The urban population is lower than over here, and vast swathes of the West in particular won't ever own a song that has reached the iTunes top 10 because they have their own completely independent music scene. Over here that underexposed group makes up a far smaller proportion of the population.

They're on an episode of iCarly too and their album was doing well on pre-orders last I saw so I expect them to get a really big push. It will be interesting to see. And yes I wish better stuff was doing well too but we've still got Adele, Florence and (sort of) Ellie too. No idea where Jessie J fits in here. But if the X Factor acts break in that should make it easier for our less commercial acts to do well. Ed Sheeran seems to be making waves (unfortunately...) but Calvin Harris seems to be launching himself too and I'm excited to see how 'Feel So Close' does.

I don't see why people like turn me on, its easily the worst thing david guetta has done :/

What, considering this is the same album that spawned the horrors 'Where The Girls At' and 'Little Bad Girl'? :/

Yeah, that's probably true. The place I was in was basically like a desert, with a few towns/cities dotted around here and there. It was so weird.

It's really tough to choose which of those is the worst.

yeah I do think its worse than those, but they are pretty terrible too!

Little Bad Girl is his worst single, but there are two proper vile intolerable tracks on the album - Nothing Really Matters and Crank It Up. LBG is just awful as well.

I love WDGA though. Titanium and Turn Me On are easily the two best he's ever done, love them pretty much equally

I really like "Where Them Girls At" as well, IMO it's streets ahead of the intolerable "Little Bad Girl". For me:

Titanium > Where Them Girls At >>>>>> Turn Me On >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Without You >>>> Little Bad Girl

Oh I TOTALLY forgot Without You. Awful as well.

Is there any difference whatsoever between Turn Me On and every other David single this era besides Titanium? It is so tiresome to see "OH THIS IS AWFUL" for everything and then "OH LOOK, IT'S A WOMAN! THIS IS AMAZING!!!!". Titanium is at least different from the rest. Emotionally resonant and with powerful vocals. TMO is just as generic and vapid with vocals as autotuned as you can get. The only thing that seperates it from the rest is that the person singing it is Nicki, a woman.

In fact Without You probably beats Turn Me On lyrically as well.

For me it goes:

Titanium >>>> Turn Me On >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Without You >>>>>>>> Where Them Girls At >>>> Little Bad Girl

The start of this era was so poor :( luckily we are now getting great single choices like Titanium and Turn Me On

My EXACT thoughts.

Unrelated, but 'When I Was A Youngster' is back up to #49 :o Really shocked at how well this has held up since the gift card week (well, I was shocked at it climbing so much from the gift card effect to start with :P)
