February 9, 201213 yr But if the odds and papers are to be believed, we'll be going from someone who can't speak English to someone who can't write English. Or fax English. Or e-mail English. Or text English. Which surely makes him the perfect candidate for the current group of players?

February 9, 201213 yr I really don't like this 'English' manager push. The best person for the job should get it regardless of where they are from. It's the only way we stand a chance of doing anything on the world stage. That having been said, Redknapp has done a pretty good job with Spurs.

It's the only way we stand a chance of doing anything on the world stage. That having been said, Redknapp has done a pretty good job with Spurs. My issue with Redknapp being appointed the manager, is that it is very forced. The media are calling for it, and seemingly are a lot of the fans. The same happened with McLaren last time "we WANT an Englishman!" this time its "we WANT Harry Redknapp". Harry is a good manager, but not a great one. He's a media darling. Does a lot of column work. Look at when Spurs lose in the press - its never his fault. Its always the players fault. Look at a club like Man City, Liverpool or Arsenal when they lose. Yet when they win he's a bloody genius. I mean he took Spurs to the quater-finals of the Champions League, the quarter-finals!!! that's like winning the European Cup!!! He's a populist appointment, nothing more. It will end in tears, it always does. In Brazil 2014 we'll be looking for another manager again, probably a foreign appointment after the disasterous spell of Harry.
February 9, 201213 yr I've noticed how vicious the media are when teams lose. Even if they just got outplayed by a superior team. He'll be the media darling until the team crashes and burns then the media will rip him a new one.
February 9, 201213 yr Yeah I really don't think players should be commenting, although it's obviously going to be Harry. More pressure than ever to get a manager who's English, by far the best English manager around and he's said it would be an honour to manage his country. He'll stay at Spurs until the end of the season, lead them to automatic CL qualification and possibly an FA Cup final, probably as far as he'll be able take them. I saw Barry Fry's hilarious rant on SSN last night... eOTnD-kamPI And he does make some very good points, he couldn't have phrased them any worse (he's Barry Fry after all!) but for the last 10 years we've had a succession of managers who've inspired zero confidence in the national team, the interest in England as a team is pretty much at an all time low, the public aren't interested and neither are the players, whether that be a foreigner or not I don't really care, although it's likely to have to be an English manager. Oh my god. Fry out of Posh. PLEASE.

Any English manager - or any foreign manager who has worked in England - will know exactly what the press are like. Some managers are likely to rule themselves out simply because they don't want to take that from the press - at least if they have a young family.
February 10, 201213 yr Why don't Coral have Tony Pulis on their list of odds? Quiet, English and a good manager - could be just what they need. The bigger the name, the more the press want from them. I'd be absolutely gutted to have Martin O'Neill walk away from Sunderland so soon after having joined them.

As seen by The Sun's front page today, the headline that 18 years ago Stuart Pearce said something racist to Paul Ince on a football pitch, not brought up at the time, or when he was still playing, or when he was Man City manager, or England U21 manager, or named as manager at the Olympics, but on the day where it's announced he'll be England manager for ONE game!

Nobody would have an interest in England if that happened. Good manager, but his tactics wouldn't suit the international scene. And O'Neill won't walk away from Sunderland, he's doing a brilliant job there and will want to stay. But do you not think its relevent? To me I didn't see it as a big at Stewart Pearce, but more of a dig at the FA. The Luis Suarez and John Terry cases have been national news for the past 4 months. The FA have been very vocal in their support against the issue, and so has Gordon imaknob Taylor. The issue was rushed under the carpet, more to be with the fact that they were England teammates more than anything. It just reeks of hypocrisy. Why is anything that was said 18 years ago seen as more acceptable than in 2012?
February 10, 201213 yr next england manager is probably going to be harry redknapp, or ian holloway lol. Neil warnock could also be a candidate as hes had a bit of experience

Why is anything that was said 18 years ago seen as more acceptable than in 2012? I'm not saying it should or shouldn't be an issue or whether it's acceptable or not, my point was that for years and years this hasn't been relevant, yet as soon as he's appointed as manager for one game it crops up again within 24 hours, why would anyone in their right mind take a job where the media intrusion is so high? You even have the Daily Mail of all papers trying to make a story over his brother being a member of the BNP, something which Stuart has repeatedly distanced himself from. You can just imagine now if he got the job permanently, the tabloid press would be doing everything they could to get a photo of them together, probably smiling or having a laugh with some guff headline article about him agreeing with everything the BNP stands for. If he were still Under 21/Olympic boss or he'd been appointed the manager of Newcastle of Wolves, the story would never have come to light again, but as soon as anyone is England manager that's it, the tide is turned and the hounding begins from the word go.
February 10, 201213 yr You say that but Capello is a proven 'World Class' manager and his tactics at the World Cup were no better, is it fair to judge someone on one tournament or a whole reign? He's had one campaign that ended badly, and two he did very well in.... But it's not just one bad tournament with Pearce I watch the Under 21 games quite closely and again he's using the same tactics in qualification for the next tournament, but luckily for him he has players like Oxlaide Chamberlain who can produce a bit of magic and paper over the cracks I don't think someone who complains that players like Jones, Walker etc.. are being "taken away from him" should be involved with developing players. For me he comes across as a manager more interested in adding to his CV than helping players make a step up to the senior squad

But that's the pressure of the England job. I don't agree that it is right, or that the ethics behind it are ok, but the media would have you believe it is the biggest job in the world football. The harsh reality is it is far from it. The media have played a downfall in the England football team for the past 16 years. Sure there have been bad moves from the managers, but every manager makes bad decisions now and again, it's only when the media get involved that events stay in people's minds. I feel a little bit for Stewart Pearce, but the FA's stance on it is pretty sub-standard, and slightly hypocritical considering how vocal they have been on the issue of alleged racism. It all comes down to freedom of the press.

For me he comes across as a manager more interested in adding to his CV than helping players make a step up to the senior squad I don't follow Under 21 football that closely admittedly, but one thing I notice is that one tournament the countries that qualify will be radically different from the previous, and a lot of big countries don't make it. I'm sorry but three qualifications including one semi-final and final is a great record for any country at that level. Also, nothing wrong with Pearce there, The FA seem hell bent on comparing everything to Spain, they took their best players regardless of experience, at least Martinez and Mata were in the world cup squad the year before but still went because there's no better international experience than playing in a tournament. Switzerland went to the final with players that had already established themselves in their first team, there wasn't really any good reason why we shouldn't have been either.

It's come out as if The FA and Stuart Pearce never had anything to do with each other until now.
February 10, 201213 yr next england manager is probably going to be harry redknapp, or ian holloway lol. It would be a completely retrograde step, we're far from a greater team but we're still firmly established in the world top 10 and should be looking at managers accordingly.

It's come out as if The FA and Stuart Pearce never had anything to do with each other until now. The Sun's motive is to sell papers. No doubt the journalist who wrote the story hasn't made the connenction. I am still very bitter about the whole situation, and no longer trust the FA or some of the higher ranking officals in the game. For example did you see the story of Pippa Power this week? The guy who is the Chief Executive of a Racism body and has been calling all Liverpool fans racist. Yet when an Asian fan brings up the fact that no Liverpool fan has been charged, yet a Manchester United fan has been banned for racist chanting just last week he gets called a coconut. Very hypocritical. Sure the FA can't do anything about the Pearce situation now, they're in too deep. But it is a very relevant issue at the moment, and one that has been swept under the carpet very well until now.
February 10, 201213 yr Pulis is Welsh! Oops...well, just goes to show how quiet he is (and suitably non-English!) Are there any decent English managers bar Redknapp then?
