What is the Single Ladies video if not 'basic'?

Basic as in Bey's usual "no effort" videos. Single Ladies, while simple, had thought put into it to come up with a concept that's actually different. It could have just as easily been Bey chucking her man out of her house or whatever. That would have been your usual basic Beyoncé video but Single Ladies stood out and that's why it went viral. Single Ladies was so basic it was good, rather than just basic enough to be terminally dull.

Na, that fits into the "NuBoring" thing that is the only alternative to synthy club stuff right now. I love how extreme the public's taste is right now. It's either MASSIVE CLUB STOMPERS or female piano ballads/random male indie stuff.

It's hardly "nu boring" in the same vein as Birdy or even Ed Sheeran. Tbh in style it's closer to "Paradise". Actually, it's just occurred to me that "Good Feeling" is the only #1 we've had this year that adheres to either of those :o "Domino" is the next closest I guess but that's pure pop.

I'll allow that Run The World (Girls) is very different compared to other hits of 2011, but 'creative' is not a word I'd use to describe Beyoncé shouting tiring random female empowerment lyrics over Pon De Floor  Each to their own I guess.

(I also don't see much similarity between 'Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It)' and 'Run The World (Girls)' besides that they're both awful).

I realise this post makes me come off like the massive hater of Beyoncé I was right when I first joined the site, but these two songs are just inexcusable :P Maybe I should throw in a 'Countdown '

Probably just me but I've always thought 'Good Feeling', although definitely being under the 'club banger' umbrella, has something a little bit more interesting to it compared to all the big club bangers of 2011 anyway. Maybe it's just the Etta James chorus.

I'm clearly one of the few that thinks that the charts are quite good at the moment! :o

She makes EITHER complete dross or sheer brillance IMO, when she's good she's amazing but when she's bad it's just AWFUL :(

I'd say the concept of producing something rather alternative and not at all formulaic for a mainstream album is what's creative about RTW. Using a sample obviously isn't creative but choosing that particular sample was (many artists have recently chosen typical 80s dance songs to sample).

On the subject of Beyoncé, is it just me or do 90% of her songs fit into one of the categories 'men are awful / women are better than men' or 'Jay-Z is amazing'?

For example, from the singles from '4':

Run The World (Girls) = women are more powerful than men

Best Thing I Never Had = she's glad that she left someone, because she hates him (for whatever reason)

Countdown = Jay-Z is amazing

Love On Top = ...Jay-Z is amazing

No you're right. I hope she calls her greatest hits something like 'Feminazi: The Singles Collection' or whatever.

What I love about Beyonce is that her albums just get better and better in terms of quality. Dangerously in Love was a 6.5/10 for me while B Day just edged it with a 7/10. Then Slayonce i.e. Sasha Fierce aka Honey Bey (:kink:) was unleashed and I Am...Sasha Fierce was a solid 8.5/10. 4 shocked the hell out of me with it's consistency (and no Bre, not in a bad way :P) and was a definite 9/10. Only 'Party' and 'I Was Here' lets the album down for me.

Best comment I've read on here in a long while.

It sort of works with the earlier stuff too.

Crazy In Love - JayZ is amazing

Baby Boy - Jay Z is amazing (or Sean Paul :P)

Naughty Girl - doesn't work

Me, Myself & I - self empowerment

Deja Vu - JayZ is amazing

Irreplaceable - Men are scum

Listen - self empowerment

Green Light - JayZ is amazing

Beautiful Liar - men and Shakira are scum

If I Were A Boy - men are scum

Single Ladies - feministic

Halo - JayZ love

Sweet Dreams - JayZ love

Broken-Hearted Girl - don't work

But then if you compare the themes of Kelly Clarkson with Beyonce, Beyonce will look diverse in comparison.

Yeah, this sums up my thoughts on the song (and probably where some of the confusion between both sides is coming from). The creation process of the song wasn't very creative, and maybe in comparison to Beyonce's discography as a whole it wasn't, but the final product, especially in the context of last year's music, definitely was imo (maybe "unique" would've been a less confusing word for me to use in the first place ).

Interestingly, Diddy also sampled Pon De Floor in Ass on the Floor, his follow-up to Coming Home, so it was out when Run the World was in the charts. It obviously flopped majorly (although I do remember it getting top 300 on iTunes), but it's probably a more "creative" use of Pon de Floor's beat, in terms of the way they sampled the song anyway, in that they took "layers" out of Pon de Floor out and added their own sounds in it:

I kind of agree with Beyonce there. I think women are amazing. Us males are pretty boring tbh. And Jay-Z IS amazing (although I probably think this for different reason to Beyonce).

that's the primary reason of why I find her incredibly boring and overrated. even if she does write her own songs, they're about the same things each time which contradict one another. either go get a man because they're amazing, or don't because THEY WILL HURT YOU.

The '4' era has produced both my favourite Beyoncé single (Countdown) and my least favourite Beyoncé single (Run The World (Girls)). Best Thing I Never Had is average leaning towards positive, Love On Top is average leaning towards negative (I did hate it initially but it's grown a little). So a pretty mixed bag there in terms of quality :P

Surprised to see you naming 'I Was Here' as a letdown, wasn't that like the fan favourite when the album came out? :o

I Was Here still seems to be a fan favourite from what I'm aware. It's quite like Halo I think.

1+1 is my least favourite from the album, but I love pretty much everything else on there.

Well I don't own a Beyonce album so i'm not in a position to argue, but for me her best songs are

Sweet Dreams

If I were A Boy

Beautiful Liar (literally only for the AMAZINGNESS of that Freemasons remix)

Halo

Irreplaceable

Love On Top

and the poor ones/ I can't make out any tune whatsoever

Countdown

Ego (seriously WTF?)

Single Ladies (repetitive and V Grating- perhaps had something to do with the fact it was around FOREVER)

EDIT: and Run The World

Yeah because it is "so personal" blah blah. :P

My highlight from 4 is by far the military 'End of Time'. WARNING: If you detest RTW you might not like this but this is one of the BEST things Bey has done.

End of Time is also a highlight for me! My other two are Party and 1+1 which I know is unpopular but whatever. 4 is a really great album.

Am I the ONLY one that prefers the original of Beautiful Liar to the remix? I swear everybody seems to prefer it. It was the remix they used to play most of the time on the radio aswell. :drama: I just felt it took so much out of the song tbh.

What is it about Ego you didn't like? I love it, but a lot of people I think didn't like it because of all the innuendo in it.

I'd imagine you wouldn't have liked Video Phone or Diva from 2009 either (although they didn't get very popular, so maybe you didn't hear them).

I love End of Time and Party (I prefer the Andre 3000 version to the J Cole version though) aswell. I think End of Time could've done well as the lead single. It's kind of similar to Run the World a bit, but much less polarizing.

Well not to sound TOO much like Vidcapper I've never been a big R N B fan so her songs that veer towards that end never score highly. I'm one of those that think that the Freemasons turn most things they touch into dancefloor magic!

Anyway what do you know I don't even know what I'm hatin on! (must be the fact I'm tired) It's not "Ego" I dislike it's actually "Diva" I recall during 2009 that the songs she made videos for I either hated or loved

Diva is fantastic but I was never a big fan of Video Phone. It's nice but not as good as the former.

I love how off topic we've all gone.
