In late 1989, Madonna and Shep Pettibone was working on a b-side for her Keep It Together single that song happened to be Vogue. The song was inspired by "voguing" that was the current underground thing on the gay scene. Warner heard Vogue and wanted to release it as a single so in April 1990 it was released becoming Madonna biggest selling single of all time (it hit #1 in 30 countries) until 2006 when Hung Up took over. Vogue remains second with 6m sales worldwide. Vogue was Madonna's first single in America to sell 2 million copies. It's Madonna biggest selling physical single there. In the UK it's sold over 505,000 copies making it her 11th best seller. Vogue was the b-side for Keep It Together in Australia topping the chart for 5 weeks. Due to Vogue's great chart success it was added on to the I'm Breathless album which helped boost sales.

Video

The black-and-white video, set in Art Deco-themed 1920s and 30s surroundings, starts off showing different sculptures, works of art, as well as Madonna's dancers posing. Along with this are images of a maid and a butler cleaning up inside what seems to be a grand house. When the dance section of the song starts, Madonna turns around, and, similarly to the lyrics, strikes a pose. The video progresses, and images of men with fedoras, Madonna wearing the controversial sheer lace dress and other outfits, follow. As the chorus begins, Madonna and her dancers start to perform a vogue dance routine. After this, other scenes of Madonna in different outfits and imitations of golden-era Hollywood stars progresses, after which there is a scene with Madonna's dancers voguing. Finally, after this scene, Madonna can be seen wearing her iconic "cone bra", after which she also performs a dance routine with a fellow dancer. As the rap section begins, different clips of Madonna posing in the style of famous photographs or portraits of Hollywood stars, begins, ultimately followed by a choreographed scene with her dancers. There was also a 12" remix video that was used to promote the song. There was some controversy surrounding the video due to a scene in which Madonna's breasts and, if the viewer looks closely, her nipples could be seen through her sheer lace blouse, MTV wanted to remove this scene, but Madonna refused.

Vogue music video received a total of nine MTV Video Music Awards nominations that had never been done before.

Live Performances

The song was performed for the very first time on the Blonde Ambition Tour in 1990 just like the video. In September 1990 for the Mtv video music awards it was a 18th-century French inspired theme, with Madonna bearing great resemblance to Marie Antoinette. In 1993 for the Girlie Show tour the song was treated to a middle eastern vibe. In 1998 Madonna said she could never see herself singing Vogue ever again so luckily for us in 2004 she opened her Re - Invention Tour up with it. The song was performed on the 2008/9 Sticky & Sweet tour as a mash up with 4 Minutes and Timbaland's Give It To Me song. Last sunday Madonna performed Vogue for the first time in nearly three years at the superbowl. half time show rocking the cleopatra look.

Vogue has topped many greatest lists including Buzzjack's favourite #1 single from 1990-2006, it also won the ultimate celebration track on this very forum and been covered by Rihanna, Kylie, Britney to name a few but how do you rate it ? What's your favourite Vogue look? Discuss all..

I can only say:

J'adore <3

Can't look the video the same though since Sue Sylvester re-enacted it in Glee

Her most iconic song and most iconic video!!

A true classic that will last for eternity!

For ages I could take or leave it. Somehow this year it's crept up on me and I cannot for the life of me get the middle 8 spoken part (Greta Garbo and Monroe...) out of my head lately. I've got a new appreciation for all of her 89-92 material which for years I completely dismissed as boring.

Probably the greatest ever Madonna song brilliant on some many levels.

I really loved her look on the Re - Invention Tour with the sexy corset and the superbowl performance was just as brilliant.

I love the 12" remix.

That exactly I thought at first! But then all of a sudden I loved it :D

I think Erotica and Ray Of Light were her absolute artistic peaks. I don't really think the Like A Prayer album is particularly special like others seem to.

"Vogue" was basically the song that converted me from Kylie to Madonna. It was literally a revolution at the time there was little like it at the time and it really shone as ahead of its time and brilliant pop!

The Erotica album is a great album artistic - there's no shame about that, people just didn't try it.

I guess most were put off by the lead single, "Erotica". They may have thought the rest of the album would be as sex mad as that song! :P

They are some great songs on it like Where Life Begins lol.

Anyway people were probably most put off by the sex book as that was released at the same time, then in january 93 body of evidence was released.

Where Life Begins is one of her best album tracks. Stunning! The lyrics are bloody clever as well.

Now what could be better than a home-cooked meal?

How you wanna eat it depends on how you feel...

You can eat all you want and you don't get fat

Nowhere else can you go for a meal like that!

I love how the lyrics are so filthy and the music so sumptuous, the whole thing just oozes sex.

I don't think the lyrical content of Erotica is anything LIKE as sexual as people expected at the time. Yes, it's very sexual, but its done in such a cold and calculated way, it all feels very clinical. I love it though, before anyone (Jark) tries to claim otherwise. I just think that for an album preporting to be SEXY, it's one of the least sexy things ever.

On the subject of Vogue, UTTERLY AMAZING. The original album mix is my favourite with the double layering of her voice on only certain words of the middle 8 ('on the cover of a magazine' being one) as opposed to the whole thing like in other versions. It truly is her PEAK though, commercially anyway. I think Ray Of Light just pips the 89/90 period creatively, but there's no doubting that for those 2 years she was utterly IMPERIOUS.
