Whitney death sparks wave of tribute buying

Source: MW

Whitney Houston’s I Will Always Love You is set to lead a string of her hits back into the UK singles chart this weekend in the biggest wave of tribute buying since Amy Winehouse’s passing last summer.

Following the announcement of the US singer’s sudden death on Sunday, sales of her back catalogue have rocketed around the world, including in the UK where the Official Charts Company is reporting 27 of her tracks are currently among the week’s top 200 sellers.

The Bodyguard cut I Will Always Love You, which is her all-time top seller in the UK having spent 10 weeks at number one, is presently showing up in 10th position, while the 1987 chart-topper I Wanna Dance With Somebody is 13th and One Moment In Time 25th. Four other track by her are in the Top 40, including her 1985 breakthrough hit Saving All My Love For You.

Houston will also figure in the Official artist albums chart as well this weekend, led by The Greatest Hits, which is the week to date’s sixth top seller.

The interest in her recordings is being compared to what happened when Michael Jackson died in 2009 and Amy Winehouse’s death last July.

Official Charts Company managing director Martin Talbot said: “The tragic death of Whitney Houston came as a shock to her friends, colleagues and music fans across the world. Again, the British public is demonstrating its love of Whitney, just as it did for Amy Winehouse last year and Michael Jackson in 2009 – and the Official Charts will reflect that this weekend and, no doubt, in the coming weeks.”

In the US Houston is having an event bigger sales impact with I Will Always Love You currently iTunes’ biggest seller, Greatest Love Of All 10th and I Wanna Dance With Somebody 11th.

Singles - New Releases/Downloads: Looks like its all over for Gotye after just a week at #1, facing stiff competition from DJ Fresh feat. Rita Ora and Emeli Sande, and a physical boost for One Direction's new single "One Thing". Also expect Adele to head back inside the top 40 with "Someone Like You" and "Rolling In The Deep" following her 6 Grammy wins in the US. Sadly over the weekend Whitney Houston passed away, expect "I Will Always Love You" and "I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)" back inside the 40, and many more of her back single catalogue within the top 100 chart at the end of the week.

Albums: Lana Del Rey's time at #1 has come to a halt, her closest competition this week comes from Emeli Sande with her new album release "Our Version Of Events" other album releases this week come from Field Music, Gotye, Skrillex, Steps and The Brit Awards 2012 album. Noel Gallagher's tour has began his album will probably re-generate sales on the back of the tour expect the album to climb back up the chart. Also another contender for #1 from Whitney Houston with Ultimate Collection or Greatest Hits due to her untimely departure with other albums from her back catalogue charting between top 40 and top 100.

Midweek Charts: Sande living up to Brit Awards promise

Source: MW

15:50 | Wednesday February 15, 2012

By Paul Williams

Emeli Sande will pick up her Brits Critics’ Choice award next week as a chart-topping artist as her debut album Our Version Of Events heads to number one in the UK.

The newly-issued Virgin album is currently outselling its two nearest challengers combined having clocked up around 66,000 copies by the end of Tuesday, according to the Official Charts Company. At the same time her cut Next To Me is likely to debut at two on the singles chart behind another new entry, Ministry of Sound act DJ Fresh’s Hot Right Now featuring Rita Ora.

Sande’s albums success will end the chart-topping run of Polydor act Lana Del Rey after two weeks. Born To Die is the second top seller of the week so far, although it is only about 3,000 sales ahead of XL’s Adele album 21, which has had a 341% lift in sales following her six Grammy wins. It moves 5-3 in the midweeks, while its predecessor 19 climbs 23-11 with a 218% sales boost.

Island act Gotye follows his number one single Somebody That I Used To Know with album Making Mirrors currently showing up as a new entry at four as Asylum/Atlantic act Ed Sheeran competes the top five with + dropping 4-5.

Having debuted at number two last Sunday, Mercury act Maverick Sabre’s introductory set Lonely Are The Brave is now down to sixth position in the new chart week, while RCA act Rebecca Ferguson’s Heaven moves 16-8 with sales improving 224%, Island/Lava’s Jessie J album Who You Are drops 7-9 and Hearmusic/Mercury’s Paul McCartney album Kisses On The Bottom falls 3-10.

A wave of tribute buying following Whitney Houston’s sudden death continues to impact the midweeks, led on the albums listings by the Sony-issued The Greatest Hits re-entering in seventh place. The Essential Whitney Houston returns in 70th position. However, the singer’s back catalogue is making its biggest mark on the singles market with I Will Always Love You in 10th place leading 13 of her hits back into the Top 75 as it presently stands. Those returning also include I Wanna Dance With Somebody in 14th place, One Moment In Time at 29 and My Love Is Your Love at 30.

With a lead up until the end of Tuesday of more than 16,000 units, DJ Fresh should secure a second number one single this Sunday following 2011’s Louder. As Sande appears set to arrive in second place, Gotye featuring Kimbra’s Somebody That I Used To Know drops down to number three, having debuted at one last Sunday. Its slip in the rankings is despite its sales rising 30% on the week.

Outside the top two, there are no other brand new entries showing up among the Top 40 positions. However, Syco act One Direction should leap into the Top 10 this Sunday with One Thing. Having been in 26th place last Sunday, it is the eighth top seller this week so far with sales rising 214%.

Midweek Charts: Sande nearing 100,000 sales

Source: MW

11:55 | Friday February 17, 2012

By Paul Williams

Emeli Sande looks increasingly like emulating Lana Del Rey by becoming the second artist in the UK this year to open with more than 100,000 sales of a debut album.

Sande’s newly-issued Virgin release Our Version Of Events had sold around 85,000 copies up to the end of business on Thursday, according to the Official Charts Company, as it heads to number one this coming Sunday.

Just a fortnight ago Del Rey’s own debut Born To Die entered at number one with 116,745 sales, making it the first album this year to sell more than 100,000 copies in a week. Having remained at number one last Sunday, it is the second biggest seller ithis week so far, although Adele’s Grammy-winning XL album 21 is not far behind in third place. Island act Gotye’s Making Mirrors is currently a new entry at four, while the Sony-issued The Greatest Hits by Whitney Houston is back at number seven in the wake of her death last weekend.

A number of Houston’s tracks are also showing up on the midweek singles chart, although none is likely to be in the Top 10 come Sunday. The Bodyguard ballad I Will Always Love You is presently the highest placed, at number 12.

Ministry of Sound act DJ Fresh was around 7,000 sales short of breaking the 100,000 mark by the end of Thursday with Hot Right Now, which should debut at number one this Sunday. It features Rita Ora. The week’s second-biggest single is also attracting high sales with Virgin act Emeli Sande’s Next To Me having sold 73,000 copies up to close of play on Thursday. After climbing to one last Sunday, Island’s Gotye featuring Kimbra single Somebody That I Used To Know is at present the third best seller of the week, while the Positiva/Virgin-issued Titanium by David Guetta featuring Sia drops 2-4 and Atlantic act Flo Rida’s Wild Ones also featuring the same act climbs 6-5.

27 Whitney Houston tracks on course to re-enter Official Singles Chart

The untimely passing of Whitney Houston makes its first impact on the Official Charts today as 27 singles and three albums of the late icon re-enter the Official Singles Chart and Official Albums Chart Top 200s.

Following the tragic death of Whitney on Saturday evening, aged 48, fans of the pop legend have been paying tribute to her by purchasing a vast array of her hit singles and albums. Early figures, counting sales from Sunday through to midnight on Monday (February 13), show that no less than 27 Whitney singles are on course to re-enter the Official Singles Chart Top 200 this weekend, of which, seven are heading for the Top 40.

Whitney’s smash hit cover of Dolly Parton’s I Will Always Love You - which spent 10 weeks at Number 1 upon its release 20 years ago this year, and went on to become the biggest selling single of 1992 - leads the way in today’s reports, entering at Number 10. 1987’s I Wanna Dance With Somebody is next in line at Number 13, with One Moment In Time (25), My Love Is Your Love (28), I Have Nothing (30), Saving All My Love For You (37), and How Will I Know (38) completing the Top 40.

Whitney’s The Greatest Hits (6), leads the way in terms of the singer’s re-entries on the Official Albums Chart, according to today’s initial sales flash. The Essential Whitney Houston (59) and 1998’s My Love Is Your Love (107) follow in the Official Albums Chart Top 200.

The Official Charts Company managing director, Martin Talbot, comments, “The tragic death of Whitney Houston came as a shock to her friends, colleagues and music fans across the world. Again, the British public is demonstrating its love of Whitney, just as it did for Amy Winehouse last year and Michael Jackson in 2009 – and the Official Charts will reflect that this weekend and, no doubt, in the coming weeks.”

Tomorrow’s Official Chart Update (4pm) will provide a glimpse at the midweek situation, with the final tally to be confirmed on Sunday at 7pm.

I might have to give the update a miss this week. I was already unlikely to listen to the chart show as I'll be watching Liverpool v Brighton. Quite a relief really

It might also mean we get tons of sales figures next week... :)

I Look To You could get a new peak? It peaked at #115 and is 85 on that list!

10 I WILL ALWAYS LOVE YOU

I pray to God this officially re-enters the top 10 on Sunday. If it won't now, I don't think it ever will. :(

It won't. :(

All the tracks will drop off massively on iTunes over the course of the week and drop down the official chart (but not by the same margin) as a consequence.

I'll think Whitney's singles are just going to fade away as the week progresses especially the ones towards the end of the top 40, at a push I can see at least 2 or 3 still in the top 40 by Sunday.

And apparently the Ultimate Collection is only eligible to chart in the Budget Albums chart, been her Greatest Hits is her highest album at #6, it means Emeli Sande is probably #1 which is just a guess with probably Lana, Adele, Gotye and Maverick Sabre or Ed Sheeran top 5, but in which order is anybody's guess.

It's amazing One Moment In TIme is back in the top 40 and two of her best are top 20  Shame this couldn't be under hapier consequences :(

Of course they'll all fall by the end of the week but it's still incredible.

Are you mildly obsessed with him? :D :o

I'd say I am unhealthily per-occupied by his posts. I look forward to them each day. I dont like the thoughts that one day I will have to live without them. Sometimes it's all that gets me out of bed in the morning. I need help. :(

Emeli Sande has two versions of "next to me" in top10 on itunes. Hope it gets to no1 on sunday. I prefer it to the DJ Fresh song.
Madonna only at 44 on itunes. I suspect it could drop out of the top40 by sunday.

Congratulations Whitney!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Amazing Amazing Amazing!!!
