Well, obviously Whitney is in a much better place now.

She is definitely high up there.

In more ways than one.

One Direction at #08 :o I fully expect them to miss the top 10, I guess reducing the song to 59p has saved it!
Madonnas new single is nothing short of an utter disapointement and its performance reflects this i believe. With Madonna i am sure she has stronger material lined up as 2nd, 3rd etc singles, if not i will be hugely disapointed.
Emeli Sande really deserves that #1 album spot, beautiful voice & album!

Completely agree - The sun says she has sold 50,000 copies until close of business yesterday so she should be selling about 120k right?

Ah thats why the Single version is rising...

To be honest that has only had an effect in past 12 hours or so.

I'm guessing they got top 10 through the Pre-Orders + physicals. They're probably hoping the 59p will help them remain there :)

BTW, Adele is planning a 5 year break or not, so her next album won't be called 23

Adele: I'm taking five-year break from music... or maybe just five days

UPDATE: Following her triumphant awards sweep at the Grammy’s last weekend, Adele has declared that she is taking a time out from the music industry.

"I am f*cking off for four or five years. If I am constantly working, my relationships fail," admitted the singer-songwriter in an interview with US Vogue.

[update: Looks like Ms. Adkins may have been pulling legs. She wrote on her personal blog this morning: "I’ve a few days off now, and then it’s the Brit Awards here at home and then I’m straight into the studio. BOYYAHH! 5 years? More like 5 days!"]

Her recent album 21 has been a worldwide sales phenomenon and it, in addition to 2008 predecessor and 19, famously chronicle tales of heartbreak.

Adele went on to explain that after her planned time off she will hopefully return to music to create a more positive third album: “At least now I can have enough time to write a happy record. And be in love and be happy. And then I don't know what I'll do. Get married. Have some kids. Plant a nice vegetable patch.

DJ Fresh has a 17k lead - that's pretty much it for Emeli's chances of the singles #1 this week then, I didn't think he'd be THAT far ahead :D

Rolling In The Deep showing up at #40 today despite low Sunday sales :cheer: Looking good for a fourth return to the top 40 for it come Sunday then and hopefully Someone Like You can sneak in as well. (They are both falling again on iTunes but are currently 29 and 35 respectively and will no doubt be back on the rise come the weekend).

VERY happy to see this news :D

Isnt IWALY at #10? Not sure it will stay there by the end of the week but still. I'm quite surprised at 1D at #8. I actually think its the best of their 3 single despite Harry Styles being even more annoying this video than previous ones.

One Thing is the only good song One Direction have put out so far so I don't mind it going top 10 - the only thing I'm annoyed about is that it will outpeak Do You Feel What I Feel? by quite a bit after initially looking like it might not do so :P DYFWIF? is by far my favourite song by the current generation boybands. Ah well, at least it's outperformed both of The Wanted's post-album singles I guess.

The shock of One Direction's success is much more in the USA than in the UK right now though.

Midweek Charts: Sande living up to Brit Awards promise

Source: MW

By Paul Williams

Emeli Sande will pick up her Brits Critics’ Choice award next week as a chart-topping artist as her debut album Our Version Of Events heads to number one in the UK.

The newly-issued Virgin album is currently outselling its two nearest challengers combined having clocked up around 66,000 copies by the end of Tuesday, according to the Official Charts Company. At the same time her cut Next To Me is likely to debut at two on the singles chart behind another new entry, Ministry of Sound act DJ Fresh’s Hot Right Now featuring Rita Ora.

Sande’s albums success will end the chart-topping run of Polydor act Lana Del Rey after two weeks. Born To Die is the second top seller of the week so far, although it is only about 3,000 sales ahead of XL’s Adele album 21, which has had a 341% lift in sales following her six Grammy wins. It moves 5-3 in the midweeks, while its predecessor 19 climbs 23-11 with a 218% sales boost.

Island act Gotye follows his number one single Somebody That I Used To Know with album Making Mirrors currently showing up as a new entry at four as Asylum/Atlantic act Ed Sheeran competes the top five with + dropping 4-5.

Having debuted at number two last Sunday, Mercury act Maverick Sabre’s introductory set Lonely Are The Brave is now down to sixth position in the new chart week, while RCA act Rebecca Ferguson’s Heaven moves 16-8 with sales improving 224%, Island/Lava’s Jessie J album Who You Are drops 7-9 and Hearmusic/Mercury’s Paul McCartney album Kisses On The Bottom falls 3-10.

A wave of tribute buying following Whitney Houston’s sudden death continues to impact the midweeks, led on the albums listings by the Sony-issued The Greatest Hits re-entering in seventh place. The Essential Whitney Houston returns in 70th position. However, the singer’s back catalogue is making its biggest mark on the singles market with I Will Always Love You in 10th place leading 13 of her hits back into the Top 75 as it presently stands. Those returning also include I Wanna Dance With Somebody in 14th place, One Moment In Time at 29 and My Love Is Your Love at 30.

With a lead up until the end of Tuesday of more than 16,000 units, DJ Fresh should secure a second number one single this Sunday following 2011’s Louder. As Sande appears set to arrive in second place, Gotye featuring Kimbra’s Somebody That I Used To Know drops down to number three, having debuted at one last Sunday. Its slip in the rankings is despite its sales rising 30% on the week.

Outside the top two, there are no other brand new entries showing up among the Top 40 positions. However, Syco act One Direction should leap into the Top 10 this Sunday with One Thing. Having been in 26th place last Sunday, it is the eighth top seller this week so far with sales rising 214%.

I agree, One Thing is the only song they've done so far I've liked so I don't mind it going top 10. If that utter dirge Gotta Be You can do it...

I thought What Makes You Beautiful was ok too. That apart I don't understand their success really (I understand the teenage girls thing of course) They have no charisma and to me Zayn is the only one who has any star quality to speak off. The others are just awkward looking and look like they have been dragged in off the street at the last minute to perform on stage. If they are a success in the US I will be shocked. Especially if they go on tv over there and perform like they do here- just shocking.

Top 40 singles has only 2 new entries, all of whitney's tracks are re-entries, and in the albums there are only 3 new albums inside the 40. OUCH!!!

'21' more than quadrupling its sales on this point last week because of the Grammys - geesh :o I thought it'd have a bit of a boost but not THAT big. I certainly thought it'd be behind Gotye at this point at least. It could even be back at #2 by the end of the week, 3k isn't a big gap to close (although the Grammy effect will die off over the week so the gap could just as easily get bigger). Great to see '19' back to just outside the top 10 and sales more than tripling on the week as well, hopefully back in the top 10 next week from the BRITs effect :D

A 30% increase on the week for Somebody That I Used To Know is very promising, it only needs an increase of a bit over 20% for the whole week to top 100k. Looking almost certain to surpass the sales at #3 that Lou Monte had on Xmas week 2011 anyway, but it'd be unbelievable if all of the top 3 sold six figures this week, would probably be the first time that's happened since the late 90s?

Random thought about Hot Right Now - 'Louder' was undoubtedly the first dubstep #1 but has there ever been a drum n bass #1 before? DJ Fresh could introduce 2 different (albeit fairly similar) genres to the UK #1 for the first time within a year of each other

66,000 sales for the Emeli Sande album is magnificent and will without doubt have higher opening sales than Lana Del Ray, that i said i have to add that both are great additions to the current crop of female artists.

Pleased DJ Fresh is so far ahead. Don't like it but much better than the disappointing boring guff that Emeli released!

Looking at the albums chart you can tell it was Valentine's yesterday, although the effect isn't as much as I thought it would be.

I said in the itunes thread this morning that although the top 2 may clear 100k i thought Gotye would increase as well - so looks like ive been proved right :P . Would love the top 3 to hit 100k, would be great for the charts. The increase for STIUTK was from last weeks sales of 82k - what would that mean for their Sunday sales if it continued like that?

As for the albums - 21 must be on course for 45k, Lana will be around that too and great to see Emeli look set to break 100k - great news for her, wish she could get the double as i think she could rise to no1 next week as I think Fresh will be front loaded - but could be on for 120k this week!!

Is there any performnances at the Brits next week that could jumpo up the charts like SLY did last year? I think most of the performers are established 2011 artists who will sing old singles - apart from a coldplay/riri collaboration - would have thought the music industry would have learned from adele last year and maybe had Emeli performing Next to Me or something?

Maybe we might get some other new albums later in the week, as all the Valentine effect albums might just start falling down. Field Mice might just climb further if the Valentine effect wears off.

Jessie J, Adele, Ed Sheeran are performing, Adele could go #1 with her album, and Jessie might score another week at #1 with Domino next week.

Field Mice might just climb further if the Valentine effect wears off.

:D
