February 16, 201214 yr Author I appreciate that, and respect countries being true to themselves with their entries, however these are my personal top 40 least favourite songs of the past decade, so I'm not expecting everybody to agree with me! This is based PURELY on my own dislike for these songs, objectively I can see why many of them were chosen and did well, but it doesn't alter my own opinions of them musically.
February 16, 201214 yr Raphael's song last year really was atrocious - and ended up knocking the best song in the competition down to 3rd, which made the hatred stronger! Looking back, 'Even If' is actually a better song than I remembered it being. :o
February 16, 201214 yr Oh dear, Raphael Gulazzi. That performance was disastrous from where I was standing, loads of horrible little screechy noises combined with a boring song, how the hell it came 2nd, easily the worst thing in that final, let alone the top 5, which was rather good, Italy aside (Yes, I'm aware I'm the only one who really likes Running Scared and Angel but...). From what little I heard of Macedonia 2011, it was abysmal also.

But it is another to dislike the performance, staging and vocal abilities. Especially because his performance was good (mi opinión). February 16, 201214 yr Well, yes. I'm not sure what the purpose of the strained voice in the climax is, but it doesn't make the performance enjoyable. It was a bad performance. But... for the song, it was a good performance. He's talented, I can see that, but it's not to my taste.

I strongly disliked watching his facial expressions and movements for example, twinned with the things that Eyes mentioned it all came across as very self indulgent and self important to me (and reading live Twitter comments like 'finally, some real music' as if it was above the contest, rubbed me even more up the wrong way). So no, I didn't like the performance, regardless of his vocal abilities or the staging. Performance and song are not the same. Take Charlotte Perrelli's performance of Hero, fantastic song accompanied by one of the all time worst examples of staging seen at Eurovision. And then Marie N's I Wanna - I really dislike the song, but didn't include it in my top 40 because I can't deny that it was one incredibly effective performance... You can appreciate a good performance even if you hate the song, and vice versa. Similarly, you can hate or love both if you really want. Opinions are subjective after all.

It's just coincidental I liked / disliked Raphael's / Saade's performance and song :heehee: Although I don't exactly hate Popular, it's just dull, especially compared to the incredible Manboy :wub:
February 16, 201214 yr Author Manboy is so limp next to Popular for me, the production is far cheaper sounding and the melody isn't anything special. The lyrics are equally awful in both tracks.
February 16, 201214 yr Author 15. Marcin Mrozinski - Legenda (Poland 2010 - 13th in the semi final) 14. Peter Nalitch & Friends - Lost & Forgotten (Russia 2010 - 11th in the final) 13. Petr Elfimov - Eyes That Never Lie (Belarus 2009 - 13th in the semi final) 12. Steven Faddy - Ajde Kroci (Montenegro 2007 - 22nd in the semi final) 11. Ansambel Zlindra & Kalamari - Narodnozabavni Rock (Slovenia 2010 - 16th in the semi final) ol0inDnI1rk 70W_3NI6sxk These pretty much all fall into the 'most misguided entry' category in my eyes, thankfully four of them failed to progress to the final. Poland's dire Legenda was a 2010 flop, Belarus served up another theatrical rock type song in 2009, sadly it was horrendous. Slovenia's 2010 brand of rock was something altogether different, a rocky backing track with a bizarre mash-up of folk from a variety of male/female singers, it all just sounded to me like a disjointed tuneless mess. Splitting up in 2007 for the first time, one half of Serbia-Montenegro did very well indeed, the former hitting the ground running winning with ballad Molitva. Montenegro sadly decided to offer up their first of many Balkan 80s pastiche dad rock songs. Not my sort of thing I'm afraid and I do wish that they'd stop. I have no idea if dated hair rock is the most popular genre in Montenegro, or like the UK are they sending songs to Eurovision that don't seem to represent their wider musical tastes at all? And of course, it was always going to feature - Russia 2010. First time I heard this I genuinely believed it to be a bet to see if they genuinely could get any old crap through to the final. Was it genuine? Was it a parody? I still don't know. The singer has one of the worst voices/accents I've ever heard, the whooping after the first line of the chorus are beyond cringeworthy, and it was surely just an exercise in how to achieve nul points at Eurovision, a HUGE misstep from one of the strongest and most reliable countries of the 00s. It somehow got to 11th and the mind still boggles...it's only as 'low' as 14th in this countdown because it possesses more of a melody than the majority of the songs in this top 20. That's all it has going for it.
