Posted February 23, 201213 yr http://www.billboard.com/photos/stylus/1685259-one-direction-617-409.jpg Vocal group One Direction makes waves on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart this week as its "What Makes You Beautiful" debuts at No. 28. It's the highest bow for a U.K. act's debut U.S. single in nearly 14 years. "Beautiful" sold 132,000 downloads in its first week according to Nielsen SoundScan, starting at No. 12 on the Digital Songs chart. Formed on the 2010 edition of the U.K.'s "X Factor" TV program, the male quintet earns the highest new-Brit Hot 100 launch since the Verve's "Bittersweet Symphony" entered at No. 13 on the chart dated March 28, 1998. (While that wasn't necessarily the Verve's very first single, it was their first Hot 100 entry.) To be more exacting, the last U.K. act (solo or otherwise) to start higher than One Direction with their true first U.S. single was singer Jimmy Ray with "Are You Jimmy Ray?" on Feb. 21, 1998 (No. 26). Finally, the last U.K. group to see its first U.S. single start higher was the Spice Girls, when "Wannabe" landed at No. 11 on Jan. 25, 1997. "Wannabe" vaulted to No. 1 four weeks later, spending four straight weeks at the top of the tally. The success of "Beautiful" may only be just beginning. It makes its retail launch even before One Direction's record label -- Columbia -- officially begins going for airplay at pop radio next week. One Direction comprises Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson. All of the group hails from U.K., save for Horan, who is from Ireland. The five young gents (ages 18-20) have nabbed three top three U.K. singles and reached No. 2 with its debut album "Up All Night" in November 2011. "Night" will be released in the U.S. on March 13 via SYCO/Columbia. Last night (Feb. 21), the act won its first Brit Award (essentially the U.K. equivalent of the U.S.' Grammy) for best British single for "What Makes You Beautiful." (The category is one of three Brit Awards determined by a public vote.) Next up for the group will be a U.S. tour with Big Time Rush beginning Feb. 24 in Chicago, with dates lined up through March 9 at Radio City Music Hall in New York City. They'll also play NBC's "Today" show on March 12 -- the day before "Up All Night" is released. One Direction follows in the recent success of fellow U.K. quintet the Wanted, who jump 25-23 on the Hot 100 this week with "Glad You Came." So far, the single has moved 418,000 downloads. The song also rises 16-13 on the Pop Songs airplay tally this week. http://www.billboard.com/news/one-directio...006257752.story A bit confused about the 418,000 downloads information for The Wanted, when Hot Digital Tracks states 380,201? [6 25 16 18 WANTED*THE GLAD YOU CAME 94193 9 86742 380201] Great achievement for One Direction!
February 23, 201213 yr Congrats to 1D, and I suspect The Wanted will easily make Top 20 on next week's chart as the song is safely in the iTunes top 10 and airplay's rising too. Any more promo lined up for TW?
February 23, 201213 yr A bit confused about the 418,000 downloads information for The Wanted, when Hot Digital Tracks states 380,201? [6 25 16 18 WANTED*THE GLAD YOU CAME 94193 9 86742 380201] . Digital Tracks - sales of the version that happens to be selling the most that weekDigital Songs - all versions of a song combined (album, single, compilation, live, remixes, edits, etc) There's a Wanted remix EP on iTunes (9 remixes). March 13, 201213 yr Up All Night got released today and they are #1 in the US, Canada and Mexico on the iTunes Album chart already! Edited March 13, 201213 yr by megahanna
March 13, 201213 yr Can't wait for 1D to take over the world! Seriously though, I always knew they'd be big in America, I can really see them being massive there.
March 14, 201213 yr One Direction! :o I'd never expected to read something like that: 'Katy Perry congratulates One Direction on US iTunes chart success' :yahoo:

March 14, 201213 yr I can't believe something as vile as one direction can be popular in the US. Sad day for the music world.
March 14, 201213 yr One Direction could be on the way to making history on the Billboard 200 albums chart next week. Industry sources suggest the vocal quintet's "Up All Night" may sell between 160,000 and 180,000 copies by the end of the tracking week on March 18. That sum could be enough to snag a No. 1 bow -- and it would mark the first U.K. group in history to debut at No. 1 with its first album. Adele's "21" set may also sell around 150,000 to 160,000 -- so that album could block One Direction from No. 1 and make a return to the top (for a 24th week!). While many U.K. groups have hit No. 1 ( Coldplay, the Beatles, Spice Girls, Depeche Mode and so on), none have -- so far -- opened atop the list with their first release. The new Billboard 200 chart's top 10 will be revealed on the morning of Wednesday, March 21. http://www.billboard.com/news/one-directio...006462152.story Edited March 14, 201213 yr by Jáhq
March 14, 201213 yr I'm seriously surprised @ Adele selling so much even now! But 1 thing is for sure, the top 2 will be Brits next week! I have a feeling 1D will pull it off though, the hype seems to be only growing more and more.
March 15, 201213 yr Author That would really be incredible for One Direction. They've certainly chosen an ideal week too - it doesn't seem like the #1 has required a sales figure that low in a while? (Not that I'm trying to take away from their possible achievement, I'm just curious if this is the case - I don't really follow US album sales very closely!)
March 15, 201213 yr TBH, it's not uncommon these days to get a #1 album in the US with 150K sales anyway.
March 17, 201213 yr Maybe it's a stupid question, but how they will count One Direction's album, separate(,,normal'' version and Deluxe) or as one??
March 17, 201213 yr Yeah, I'd say this was a bad week for One Direction to choose. Adele's sales are very high still because of the Grammys.
March 17, 201213 yr The U.K. pop group One Direction is aiming for a No. 1 debut on the Billboard 200 album chart next week with its first album, "Up All Night." However, Adele's "21" may block the quintet from the top with a return to No. 1. Presently, industry sources suggest "Up All Night" may sell around 160,000 to 170,000 copies by the end of the tracking week on Sunday, March 18. However, Adele's "21" could sell right around the same amount. How the albums perform over the weekend will play a large part in their placing on the chart next week. Even if One Direction settles for a No. 2 bow, it will make history as the highest debut from U.K. group's first album. http://www.billboard.com/news/one-directio...006494752.story Going to be very close between 1D & ADELE by the looks of it :o
March 17, 201213 yr Maybe it's a stupid question, but how they will count One Direction's album, separate(,,normal'' version and Deluxe) or as one?? I've heard that the deluxe and the normal version will be combined. Edited March 17, 201213 yr by megahanna
March 17, 201213 yr Yeah, I'd say this was a bad week for One Direction to choose. Adele's sales are very high still because of the Grammys. Well on Walmart they're #1 on the best seller's list and Adele is number #7. Also One Direction have a signing today so that should help sell a few thousand copies which should assist the physical sales (which cannot be tracked). I think it's quite likely that they get that #1 and sales tracking ends tomorrow.
