It's been done in the past, so we may as well separate the general discussion and the chat about the pilots for next year.

This CW take on The Hunger Games actually sounds quite good.

I read about that too, sounds interesting! Definitely a show I'll keep my eye out for.
I've mainly got my eyes out for the CBS 'Partners' pilot and the Mark Schwahn/JJ Abrams pilot. The casting for 'Partners' seems to be pretty good.

I'll do a summary of all of the pilots with a separate post for each channel. NBC first (I've put the names of British actors cast in the pilots in orange):

DRAMAS

Bad Girls ~ Bad Girls follows the ins and outs of a group of unlikely women in a federal prison: a scandalous female warden, her new protégé and a host of inmates – some mothers, some friends—who struggle with loyalties to people on the inside and the outside. Starring Amy Smart (Shameless). Produced by John Wells (Shameless).

Beautiful People ~ An imaginative and thematically rich ensemble “what if” drama set 10 minutes in the future where families of mechanical human beings exist to service the human population — that is, until some of the mechanicals begin to “awaken”. Starring Frances Conroy & James Murray.

Chicago Fire ~ Action-driven drama exploring the complex and heroic men and women of the Windy City’s Fire Department. Starring Monica Raymund & Taylor Kinney.

County ~ Centers on the lives of a group of young doctors, nurses, and administrators, in a frenetic underfunded and morally compromising L.A. County Hospital. Starring Aimee Garcia & Michael B. Jordan (Friday Night Lights).

Midnight Sun ~ This thriller follows the mysterious disappearance of a group living on a commune in Alaska. Based on an acclaimed Israeli format, a female FBI cult specialist starts an investigation that uncovers a larger conspiracy. Starring Michael Raymond-James (True Blood) & Titus Welliver (The Good Wife).

Mockingbird Lane ~ An imaginative reinvention of The Munsters as a visually spectacular one-hour drama. Pilot production pushed to summer so will be midseason if picked up.

Revolution ~ A high octane action drama from J. J. Abrams following a group of characters struggling to survive and reunite with loved ones in a world where all forms of energy have mysteriously ceased to exist. Directed by Jon Favreau.

I think they've got some dramas there with decent potential. Grey's is slowly declining in popularity (although still one of the best rating shows across the networks) so there could be room for a new medical drama although the last few attempts like Mercy and Trauma have been panned. To work they need to be soapy so if County is that it might stand a shot. I'm skeptical about a Bad Girls remake but John Wells did an amazing job of adapting Shameless. The storylines couldn't be as shocking as in the original though since it's on network TV. Beautiful People sounds too high-concept/ridiculous (and has an awful title), same with Revolution. Chicago Fire and Midnight Sun both sound like they have potential. Do No Harm is clearly inspired by Jekyll & Hyde but that's a great source story so if it was fun it could work. It sounds like Mockingbird Lane has multiple issues so I won't hold my breath. I'd say on paper Midnight Sun is the potential breakout hit there.

The comedies mostly sound awful... you would think they would learn from this season with their Chelsea Handler/Whitney Cummings disasters not to bother with comedians starring as themselves so I doubt if the Sarah Silverman one will be up to much, although apparently she's not actually playing herself (although some of the other cast members are bizarrely). The New Normal is getting lots of early buzz what with being Ryan Murphy's new project so I expect that will get picked up. Isabel sounds beyond ridiculous and too high concept for a comedy series although the cast is shit-hot. Animal Kingdom just sounds absurd. There's lots of hype around Downwardly Mobile for being Rosanne Barr's first comedy series in years but she's a bit of a joke in America now from what I can tell and what with being multi-camera I can imagine it'll feel very passé. Friday Night Dinner could be the big hit of that lot, especially with the cast they've got.

I'll post the other networks later.

Thanks for the effort Jark, really appreciated. 'Midnight Sun' sounds like the best drama and I'd really like to see them take on 'Bad Girls' too. 'Beautiful People' sounds quite interesting but also a bit odd and I doubt if it would last.

'The New Normal' sounded like the best comedy even before seeing Ryan Murphy's name attached to it. Means it could be good - at least for the first season. 'Next Caller Please' is an instant no from the title alone.

I'm not sure if any have the potential to turn NBCs fortunes around though. Hopefully that will come with time but with 'Smash' slipping in the ratings after all the promo & buzz it got..

Not sure which thread to put this in. Tony Hale!

I can't decide whether Veep looks funny or not. It looks like one of those smart-but-not-many-jokes kind of comedies which will rely on Julia's performance.

'How To Live With Your Parents for the Rest of Your Life'? Sometimes it's hard not to judge something based on title alone.

Really hope 'Devious Maids' gets picked up, already got two names attached to it that I love and it sounds perfect to fill the Sunday 9/8c slot (especially if GCB fails, which I'm thinking it will). '666 Park Ave' sounds decent too and I'd be interested in 'Penoza' just because of Melissa Rosenberg.

Comedies normally don't sound amazing from those short descriptions but I'm unsure on whether I want 'Only Fools and Horses' to get a pick-up or not. On one hand it could be interesting to see how the Americans do it but it's not like these British remakes do much usually and I can't say I'm a fan of the original.

I would say Devious Maids is as close to being a cert for a pick-up as it's possible for a pilot to be. Too much pedigree involved for them not to take it to series and they still need a DH replacement (like you Jahq I'm pretty sure GCB won't be it).

I think it's a really strong list of pilots although they all sound like potential moderate hits rather than breakouts. But then I would have said that about Once Upon A Time and I was sure Revenge would flop, so you never know. I think in particular 666 Park Ave, Devious Maids, Gilded Lilys, Nashville and Penoza have potential (on paper). Beauty and the Beast and Gotham might well be magical world overload. ]i]Americana[/i] sounds like it would be too niche/gay to succeed even on ABC. Last Resort sounds like it should be on Fox and a completely awful fit for ABC.

On the comedy side American Judy is the big one I think. The Smart One has good pedigree too and Counter Culture feels like it's obviously aiming for a Golden Girls kind of success. The rest don't grab me and the two remakes in particular sound hideous but we'll see.

Oh god. The world didn't need the original 'Only Fools & Horses' never mind a crappy American remake.
F Murray Abraham has joined the cast of Beauty and the Beast.

As has Ashley Tisdale. Even if her official website is saying it is CBS, what makes it worse is the article on her website links to an article saying it is on ABC.

Ashley has joined the untitled CBS comedy by Louis CK, she's got nothing to do with Beauty On The Beast!
