I was glancing at the iTunes chart this morning, and suddenly noticed how many songs I would classify under a different genre to the one stated - something like 9-10 in just the top 30!

Would it be the record companies who tell iTunes how they want their songs classified, or is that something that iTunes decide themselves?

Anyway, I thought it might be interesting to ask what % of their songs *you* would classify differently? Perhaps we should restrict it to, say, the top 50, otherwise the checking could become tedious.

Yes, I realise the proportion will vary over time - but I was thinking of just a spot check.

Quickly scanning through, the ones in the top 50 I would change are:

1. Somebody That I Used to Know - pop

2. Starships - pop

4. Wild Ones - dance

13. Drunk - pop

15. International Love - dance

18. Ass Back Home - hip hop

20. Alone Again - pop (How is this down as dance wtf?)

21. Twilight - RnB

22. We Found Love - dance

23. Breathing - dance

25. Drunk - pop

27. Paradise - pop

30. Lego House - pop

31. Bright Lights - hip hop

37. Born to Die - pop

40. Take Care - dance

45. Party Rock Anthem - dance (How is this still top 50? :drama:)

Some songs are difficult to classify though, which is fair enough, but a lot of those are just full on WRONG.

So 34% for me.

Let's Dance For Sport Relief.

I've not had a look yet, but Alone Again as Dance is the most annoying tag ever. :P Having said that, I didn't change it on my iPod...
Alone Again is probably down as dance because she's signed to All Around The World (which deals almost exclusively in dance music). Still baffling but it makes an iota more sense I guess :P
Eric, Take Care is dance?

Yeah, it's got the drum pattern that you find in dance music for most of the song.

But okay, you can say pop if you want. That song is really difficult to classify imo, so I'd just say pop.

How about listing what the classifications are in this thread to make it easier to come up with an answer? I'm not going to go to itunes just for this - I've never really noticed the Genre classifications on there either!

These are the all ones covering the current chart - there are others that occur as & when a song of that genre enters :
