May 10, 201213 yr Huh? Take That have never done the Comic Relief single though? You've completely lost me here. Dawn French, Jennifer Saunders etc dressed as the Spice Girls?
May 10, 201213 yr Dawn French, Jennifer Saunders etc dressed as the Spice Girls? I think they are tribute band :heehee: Yeah, I know THAT, but the Spice Girls comic tribute act was called the Sugar Lumps...
May 11, 201213 yr Take That's song 'Happy Now' had a video made for Comic Relief in 2011, with 'Fake That' featuring in it (Fake That = Alan Carr, Catherine Tate, David Walliams, John Bishop & James Corden). http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2011/03/18/article-1367465-0B38E01E00000578-693_634x499.jpg

May 11, 201213 yr Well...........................not quite............. 21. VIVA FOREVER- Spice Girls (624,300) http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/8/80/Viva_Forever.jpg RELEASED: 1998 PEAK POSITION: 1 WKS ON CHART: 13 Pencilled in initially as a double A-Side with “Never Give Up On The Good Times” the single was in trouble before it was released as the release date was pushed back twice during/ and probably because Halliwell left the band. Though the video was always planned to be a stop motion one (fortunately) first week sales of 277k proved that the Spice brand was undiminished by Geri’s departure and the track became the 7th single by the band to cross the platinum threshold. DsP9_s2zx-o The only song they did that ever turned my head. Love the harmonies that Mel C did. Edited May 11, 201213 yr by tonyttt31

HOW DEEP IS YOUR LOVE- Take That (669,300) http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/6/6a/Take_that_how_deep_is_your_love_CD1.jpg RELEASED: 1996 PEAK POSITION: 1 WKS ON CHART: 14 Yes it was all over, time to have a collective weep as Take That bowed out on a high with this Bee Gees cover and a high symbolic video suggesting the death of the band at the hands of a stalker. An 8th chart topper (a record for the 90s held jointly) tales abounded, whether true or not, that the Samaritans had set up a helpline to cope with distressed teenagers after the announcement of the split. The single however became their second biggest seller and the first of three Bee Gees covers to make the top in the second half of the 90s. KTCHFBVX8ac

WHEN THE GOING GETS TOUGH- Boyzone (671,400) http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/6/69/BoyzoneGoingGets.jpg RELEASED: 1999 PEAK POSITION: 1 WKS ON CHART: 16 These lot were into their last year together as well but Comic Relief had managed to bag one of the biggest acts around for their cause again (they always did so much better than CIN on that front). The Billy Ocean original in 1986 had featured in the film “The Jewel Of The Nile” and roped in film stars Devito, Douglas and Turner in as backing singers, Boyzone couldn’t quite manage that calibre of stars though and had to settle for the likes of Graham Norton, Jo Brand and most of Emmerdale. kmRxeHWn4NI

PURE SHORES- All Saints (685,300) http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/3/31/Pure_Shores_All_Saints.jpg RELEASED: 2000 PEAK POSITION: 1 WKS ON CHART: 16 “This was the single that saw the Saints out-performing every other girl group on the planet, ditching the famous-for-being-famous tag, and finally becoming the statuesque pop goddesses they always claimed to be” one review wrote, it’s hard to argue with really. With the Spice Girls gone AWOL the Saints picked up Orbit who had been catapulted into the premier league of producers thanks to “Ray Of Light” and produced “Pure Shores” for the soundtrack to the film “The Beach”. It became the bands 4th No 1 single and the second biggest single of 2000 and in keeping with the previous 2 entries within a year of this track the group were no more. HETpIFIeypE
May 11, 201213 yr I was addicted to Pure Shores! Loved it! Great movie too. I still am. Twelve years on and I still never tire of listening to 'Pure Shores'. Pop music at its absolute finest. Shame William Orbit had to ruin it all with Madonna's cover of 'American Pie' although he redeemed himself again with All Saints when 'Black Coffee' came along a few months later. Hard to believe that acts like All Saints, A1 and, to a lesser extent, Busted split up within a year of hitting their peak.
May 11, 201213 yr Pure Shores was the 2nd best seller of 2000, not the 3rd. It only got overtaken by Bob the Builder in the final sales week but nothing else. Top Of The Pops also had to incorrectly announce it as the best seller of the year on their Christmas special.
May 11, 201213 yr Author Pure Shores was the 2nd best seller of 2000, not the 3rd. It only got overtaken by Bob the Builder in the final sales week but nothing else. Top Of The Pops also had to incorrectly announce it as the best seller of the year on their Christmas special. Altered- I think I got that and Sonique mixed up  Oh the ignomy of being pipped by that song! Though in a way had it not been for Westlife (plus press battle) its sales in that week probably wouldn't have been THAT spectacular so All Saints may have clung on?!

I SWEAR- All 4 One (698,500) http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/1/11/All4one-iswear.jpg RELEASED: 1994 PEAK POSITION: 2 WKS ON CHART: 18 Like Boyzone (No 45) a song that was a country hit for John Michael Montgomary and another mammoth long stayer at No 1 in the states where All 4 One stayed spent 11 wks. Like Let Loose (No 30) this run into “Love Is All Around” and spent 7 wks playing second fiddle to it (unmatched since until “Moves Like Jagger” last year), surprisingly it isn’t the biggest selling No 2 on this rundown though! pLqPJZUNrqI

MMMBOP- Hanson (712,500) http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/f/f4/Hanson-mmmbop.jpg RELEASED: 1997 PEAK POSITION: 1 WKS ON CHART: 13 Written by the band as a ballad it was transformed into the relentlessly upbeat version by the producers dust brothers and gained massive airplay pre release here after toping the US chart. Indeed the song topped both charts simultaneously in June 97 (the first time a debut hit had ever done this), and the brothers became overnight sensations. At just 11 the youngest brother Zac was the youngest member of a group to top the charts since St Winifred’s Choir back in 1980, they’re all married and have 8 children of their own between them. zEcVDZNHxGc

UPTOWN GIRL- Westlife (745,600) http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/9/9a/9UptownGirl1.jpg RELEASED: 2001 PEAK POSITION: 1 WKS ON CHART: 16 The best selling Comic Relief of all time (until Tony Christie anyway) Westlife scored a 8th No 1 on sales of 292k by far their best weekly total. Written by Billy Joel after holidaying in the Caribbean where he met three models (McPherson, Brinkley, and a then unknown Whitney Houston) he titled it “Uptown Girls” and started to date McPherson. After they split and for the video he hired fellow model Brinkley and after the promo was shot they started to date and then married. To keep the model connection Westlife got Claudia Schiffer in and before you know it it equalled Joel’s peak position in the UK, to show they still had a sense of humour there’s even reference to Bob the Builder in the video who had recently broken their run of consecutive No 1’s. SPICE UP YOUR LIFE- Spice Girls (806,000) http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/d/d2/Spice_Up_Your_Life.jpg RELEASED: 1997 PEAK POSITION: 1 WKS ON CHART: 15 Making it five out of five, chart topper wise, the Spice Girls returned in late 97 with that tricky second album. The release of “Spice Up Your Life” was delayed by a week as the girls wanted to give Elton a longer run at the top, though some suggested it was more to do with the doubts they had that they could knock “Candle In The Wind 97” off the top. The fears were unfounded after the song sold 321k to depose John and even had they of released it a week before (as they intended) it would still have done the business for them. dQG1vIyVFng

FATHER AND SON- Boyzone (815,700) http://991.com/newGallery/Boyzone-Father--Son-60160.jpg RELEASED: 1995 PEAK POSITION: 2 WKS ON CHART: 16 And here’s the biggest selling No 2 hit on this rundown, and who else but the biggest boy band in this thread but Boyzone. Penned and featuring on a 1970 album by Cat Stevens the original is sung in two keys and is a dialogue between father (deeper register) and son (higher key) hence the title, but Boyzone seemed to glaze over that and create a straightforward pop song that is kind of confusing on the level of understanding anyway. No matter for the fans who bought it anyway, and by the bucket load, benefitting from a top 3 position in the Christmas week the song almost makes it into our top 10. MkXCzsZv-94
May 13, 201213 yr Author 10. GOODBYE- Spice Girls (833,400) http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/c/cb/Goodbye_(Spice_Girls).jpg RELEASED: 1998 PEAK POSITION: 1 WKS ON CHART: 21 Though denied at the time as a farewell to Halliwell, the girls now confess that is exactly what “Goodbye” is, and a fitting one too becoming their third successive Christmas No 1 and equally the record set by the Beatles in 63/64/65. However the scale of its victory was a mere 7k, well down on previous efforts which had made the debate of who would get the festive chart topper null and void after a couple of days of the shops opening, chased, as it was, all the way by Chef, it still put in a massive 380k of sales to dominate. ydrD_dY8TqI
