March 20, 201213 yr Really well done to them. The first ever British Boyband to debut at the #1 spot. It's says the final count so I'm assuming it's official.
March 20, 201213 yr Author It's final, not official. But looking at the diff btn them and Adele, they'll definitely be #1 albeit with a few more sales that Billboard counts. So eitherway, around 180K which is what was predicted. Amazing ! And to think this album wasn't even #1 in their home country!
March 20, 201213 yr Brap. I thought Adele would beat them! Happy for them though. Edited March 20, 201213 yr by Umi
March 20, 201213 yr Author Given Adele's sales declining (well 160K is still v healthy), I just hope she gets 1 or 2 weeks at #1 to beat any record. I wonder if she has any promo trips planned to promote RHI?
March 20, 201213 yr I'm very pleased for them, but still very shocked at how quickly it seems to have happened! I NEVER thought One Direction would crossover to the US, and especially not in such a big way.
March 20, 201213 yr Congrats to them- doing what most boybands failed to do. The power of Cowell goes on!
March 20, 201213 yr Whilst the family were visitng on Sunday, we had it on Nickelodeon for my neice and nephew. I noticed that One Direction star in the advert for the Nickelodeon Awards 2012. So it's clear that they're being marketing in the US in a similar way to Spice Girls. Who is your favourite "direction"? Oh, the shame!!! :drama:
March 20, 201213 yr Really well done to them. The first ever British Boyband to debut at the #1 spot. It's says the final count so I'm assuming it's official. The first ever British group full stop to debut at #1 with their debut album in fact! Even The Beatles didn't manage that. The HDD figures aren't always accurate but I doubt a gap of >21k is going to be overturned by the SoundScan figure so I'd say their #1 album is sealed. Well done to them. If someone had said shortly after they came 3rd on XF that they'd get a #1 album in the USA but not the UK I would have reacted with a large quantity of :lol:s. March 21, 201213 yr Congrats to them!!!!! I don't think we need to do all the subliminal insults. They've done well.
March 21, 201213 yr One Direction Makes History With No. 1 Debut on Billboard 200 U.K. pop vocal group One Direction makes history on the Billboard 200 albums chart as the first U.K. group to debut at No. 1 with their debut album. "Up All Night" enters atop the list with 176,000 copies sold, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Previously, the highest bow for a U.K. group's first album came on Feb. 22, 1997, when Spice Girls' "Spice" started at No. 6. The album eventually climbed to No. 1 in its 14th week on the list, spending five nonconsecutive frames in the penthouse. "Up All Night's" lead single, "What Makes You Beautiful," debuted at No. 28 on the Billboard Hot 100 a month ago. That marked the highest entry by a U.K. group's debut single since Spice Girls' "Wannabe" bowed at No. 11 on Jan. 25, 1997. Formed on the 2010 edition of the U.K.'s "X Factor" TV program, One Direction comprises Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson. All of the group members hail from the U.K., save for Horan, who is from Ireland. The act has nabbed three top three U.K. singles and its debut album hit No. 2 in November 2011. For the past two weeks, One Direction mania has been in full swing in the U.S., as the group did numerous album-signing events at shopping malls and performed on NBC's "Today" show on March 12. The group's record label, SYCO/Columbia, says that over 10,000 fans showed up for the "Today" gig -- its first live TV performance in America. One Direction also recently wrapped a 10-date concert tour of the U.S., where they opened for Big Time Rush. Coincidentally, One Direction's No. 1 start on the Billboard 200 is the highest debut for a pop vocal group's first album since Big Time Rush's "BTR" landed at No. 3 on Oct. 30, 2010.
