March 23, 201213 yr Yes, on BBC Radio 2, on Monday 9th April, (4pm to 7pm), Tony Blackburn is counting down the UK's Top 40 Best Selling Albums. (July 1956 to March 2012). It is The OCC's first Top 40 up-date since Mid June 2009 - which went up to the Chart of W/E 20th June 2009. 3 Acts will definitely have 2 Albums in - Queen, The Beatles, & Dido. (Which looks odd now, as she is nowhere near as popular as she was, when she had those 2 Hit Albums). Coldplay may well also have 2 Albums in the Top 40. There will only be 1 Film Soundtrack in the Top 40. Surprisingly it will not be 'South Pacific', 'The Sound Of Music', 'Saturday Nigh Fever', Grease', or 'The Bodyguard. It will be 'Dirty Dancing'. March 24, 201213 yr Adele could be a decent shot for 2 albums top 40 surely? '19' can't be that far outside if not.
March 25, 201213 yr Adele could be a decent shot for 2 albums top 40 surely? '19' can't be that far outside if not. Using the 2006 top 100 list, Adele's 19 would be in the top 60, and only 300k away from being in the top 40. So there's a chance that if Adele's 3rd album sells well enough to reach the top 40, by the time it gets there, it might be joining 21 AND 19.

I don't see that as odd, given that her two albums are still a lot more recent than those by Queen, or The Beatles! :P
March 25, 201213 yr Her overtaking "Dark Side of the Moon" is quite scary really. Still, I'll be more annoyed when she beats the 24 million mark of "Hybrid Theory" in the worldwide albums of the century list. She already has. Please don't trust the Wikipedia list, it's often based on claims by the record labels. Which inflate numbers.

March 25, 201213 yr People say she hasn't had an impact on music? Im no stan but you only need to look at how music went last year... Ed Sheeran, Charlene Sorariairuysjdhgfjd, Rebecca Ferguson, Gotye, Fun. (which I'm certain will go to 1) and so many more... Its probably even the influence for our Eurovision entry this year... The British Music Industry went from R&B and Hip Hop shit to much more ballady acoustic stuff.

And it's all very well an good influencing music trends for twelve months, but it's far too premature to judge her long term impact.
March 25, 201213 yr To be fair, Ed was always going to be big, the hype surrounding him was huge, Rebecca finished second in X-Factor before Adele released and let's face it, her music was never going to be any different was it? It's also not like that music wasn't successful beforehand. Bruno, Take That had both had huge hits at the back end of the year with ballads... And even a lot of the successful hip-hop songs of 2010 had a more ballad-like feel to them (Nothin On You, Love The Way You Lie, Airplanes, Billionaire, Written In The Stars)
March 25, 201213 yr I don't see that as odd, given that her two albums are still a lot more recent than those by Queen, or The Beatles! :P But if you gave 100 people 100 seconds to name as many artists in the all-time top 40 selling albums as they could, The Beatles and Queen would get a far higher score than Dido. Her success simply made it easier for them to succeed.
March 25, 201213 yr Do you have access to some more accurate figures? If you add up all available certfications from Europe, the main countries of the Americas and Australia/ New Zealand you get to something like 15.5 million albums sold. Of the missing markets (Africa, Asia, smaller Latin American countries), the only relevant ones are the East Asian markets, but I've never heard of a Western album selling 8 million copies there. Moreover, "Hybrid Theory" peaked at 19 in Japan. For the sake of comparison, "Meteora" peaked at 6 and went platinum (250,000 copies sold). Anyway, even if you allow for a million copies sold in Japan, you won't get near 24 million worldwide. Finally, the label itself claimed 18 million copies sold as of 2007 (which may well have been inflated as well at the time, though not much, possibly by a million); the Live Earth press release given as a source on Wikipedia is from 2007 as well, so that makes its claim rather suspicious. Though it's not official, Mediatraffic also states that the album sold 18 million copies. That Wikipedia list has very many other mistakes, for example "Confessions" at 20 million copies sold.

Certifications can occasionally be rather tardy, there's multiple examples of the BPI being very slow to award albums - and many never get their full certification at all. That obviously doesn't cover the 8.5 million gap you talk about but I'd say that 18-20 million is a fairly good bet.

Personally, I am sure it has cleared 18 million, though 20 million seems to me a bit of a stretch. But I don't have evidence to argue so I guess the 18-20 million range is fine.

May 3, 201213 yr Author Adele's 21 outsells Michael Jackson's Thriller in the UK Source: MW By Rhian Jones Adele’s Grammy award winning album 21 has now outsold Michael Jackson’s Thriller in the UK. The 4,274,300 sales place the record fifth on the list of biggest selling albums of all time in the UK, along with What’s the Story Morning Glory by Oasis (fourth), Abba’s Gold – Greatest Hits (third), SGT Pepper’s Lonely Heart’s Club Band – The Beatles (second) and Greatest Hits by Queen (first). 21 has sold an average of 20,000 copies per week over the past four weeks, the total number of sales is expected to increase when this week's chart sales data is published on Sunday. Official Charts Company’s managing director Martin Talbot said: “Thriller has long been recognised as one of the most iconic albums of all time – there is now no doubt that 21 can be spoken of in the same breath.” The album has spent 66 weeks on the Official Albums Chart, 23 of those at Number 1 and outsold Amy Winehouse’s Back To Black to be named the biggest selling album of the 21st century. 23 year old Adele has won six Grammy Awards and Two Brit Awards since bursting on to the music scene in 2008 and is estimated to be worth £6 million.

Adele's around 20 million, Thriller is near 70 million. This is the UK charts, which fair play to her is very successful, but I mean come on, maybe in the UK this statement could be true for most of the rest of the world its not.

To be fair in completely different time periods to sell anywhere near 20million and to be breaking the records she is breaking right now is undeniably impressive and an incredible achievement. The fact that illegal downloading is so much more common and easily accessible now then ever before cant be ignored. Congratulations to Adele, and what an album too.
May 3, 201213 yr I kind of want Adele to get to number 1 on the list just for the insanity of it all, every music snob would have a mass-stroke
