Posted March 25, 201213 yr Perhaps we should confine this to songs peaking no lower than top 10 or so? I can think of two offhand... Nizlopi-JCB Song : 24/12/05 81.7k #1, 31/12 159.8k #2 Orson-No Tomorrow : on the two weeks before & after it was #1 it outsold the 17k it sold as the lowest ever #1! I'm sure there must be others though.
March 25, 201213 yr Did the last Olly Murs song not do something similar to Orson? The week it was number one was about its 5th highest weekly sale. 'Rule The World' being #2 behind 'Bleeding Love'. Its sales of 97k were enough for it to be number one on 46 of the 53 chart weeks of 2007.
March 25, 201213 yr The Killers 'Human' debuted at #4 with 56k, although it did climb for two weeks after. The number 3 was only higher twice that year, the number 2 only higher four times, and the number one only 12 times.

So unlucky, I'm worried that was their best chance of #1 (I'm pretty sure it got closer sales-wise than "When You Were Young" despite the latter getting to #2). "Starships" actually decreased in sales last week despite rising 3-2. Not sure if Gotye's best week was the one where he was #3 behind DJ Fresh and Emeli Sandé but that would be WEIRD.

March 25, 201213 yr Ellie Goulding Your Song #39 8000ish #03 84,000 #02 72,000 Don't remember her weeks after that, I think she hovered at 60,000 for a while.

The number 3 was only higher twice that year, the number 2 only higher four times, and the number one only 12 times. Such a shame the record company didn't invest in a 7" release even if it was limited edition and just pressed 5k. Only reason was when The Killers were #3 with 'Human', The X Factor 'Hero' and Beyonce 'If I Were A Boy' were the top 2 but there was only about 5k between the top 3. With the potential 7" sales, The Killers could have had one week at #1 but it wasn't to be. :(
March 25, 201213 yr Joe McElderry's The Climb and Steve Brookstein's Against All Odds are obvious ones surely - they climbed to #1 in their second weeks because they had been stuck behind behemoths in their first, but their sales still slid a lot.
March 25, 201213 yr Rihanna feat Drake - What's My Name? 104,487 #02 91,349 #02 98,182 #02 53,013 #01 Rihanna - Loud 193,548 #02 248,934 #02 76,237 #01
March 25, 201213 yr Joe McElderry's The Climb... The biggest rolling eyes UK #1 ever. Just everything about that seemed so set up it was untrue. RATM getting to no. 1 wasn't (that was a :D moment regardless). Just a shame 'Bad Romance' couldn't have been no. 1 instead of 'The Climb' "climbing" (oh, the irony) to the top but hey ho. :P
March 25, 201213 yr Eva Cassidy & Katie Melua - What A Wonderful World sold more in its 2nd week than it did when #1.

March 26, 201213 yr Last Christmas by Wham sold quite a lot when it debuted at #2 but Band Aid sold 700k more. And it never proceed to #1 even though it did catch the latter. Edited March 26, 201213 yr by SKOB
