The "right #1" as in, the one that was the biggest hit. Sean Paul will almost definitely outsell Katy in the longrun.

So by that logic We Found Love wasn't the right #1 against Moves Like Jagger :P

That's a different situation. Part Of Me and She Doesn't Mind were both held back and released on the same week so can be directly compared.

The main reason M didn't have a hit single from this album is not the quality of the songs! Don't tell me every song in top 10 are better than GGW. It's just because she had nil promo cause she is so over that and radio1 openly refuses to play her now because they admitted they are agists against artists they play.

I know I know, it's just interesting way of thinking.

When will people understand that the quality of a song is not necessarily reflected in it's chart position. As a madonna fan I have to concede that I think the promo for this period head been poor, but it hasn't been helped by the frankly bizarre release schedule of the track. Another case of a star believing they don't need to promote anymore. What is surprising is that the single "GMAYL" was released on a friday following the same pattern of lady gaga last year which definitely cost her a no 1 single. It is perhaps more understandable for gaga as she has the US market in mind, but madonna is no longer the commercial force she was there, so she should be concentrating on the european markets.

But GMAYL has done much better in the US than in the UK, which is quite surprising if you ask me.

Also, the album is heading for opening of over 300k there which is astounding, even better than HC and AL let alone Celebration which didn't do very well.

I think UK is the market which is letting her down. It used to be her #1 market.

Yeah, was just reading on Billboard that her album is likely to debut with sales of between 300,000 - 350,000. That's fantastic news and has wildly exceeded my expectations. I was expecting something around the 200,000.

Granted but I refer to her status relative to the 80s and 90s in the US. She's doing well in part due to the super bowl appearance, but in the uk it's still disappointing.

Whats the ave album no1 sales in the us though? They have a much bigger population than the uk?

Well, Bruce Springsteen's album debuted at #1 a few weeks ago with sales of around 200,000 I believe. And when One Direction debuted at #1 it was less than that. Album sales have declined so much in The States that I think 300k-350k would be considered pretty strong.

I usually use a 0.3x multiplier to roughly work out equivalent album sales in the US, so a 300k opening is the equivalent of 90k over here - pretty solid given her recent opening weeks in the US.
I thought us album sales has INCREASED in the past 2 years? Suppose that doesnt include the no1 necessarily selling more though!

Quality is a completely subjective term so this is a pretty meaningless statement anyway.

Why is it surprising? Wasn't the song clearly done just for the Superbowl?

She'll do more than 55k. Saturday is one of the biggest sales days but I also believe the weather has played a factor into her sales. People just wanna chill and enjoy the sun. They don't want to go and buy albums (unless they're Now albums )

Agreed. The charts reflect the general consensus of what is good quality; clearly that is going to vary from individual to individual hence why so many people have issues with the charts from time to time.

not *totally* subjective - you can generally hear the difference between a song done in a recording studio, and one recorded in your bedroom... :P
