Was it ever cool to like the Carpenters, one of the most successful acts of the 70's, both here and in the US, with loads of hit singles and albums. I must admit to liking some of their music at the time, but never owned up to it in public :D , but looking back they did sing some good catchy pop tunes, that stand the test of time.

What do you think.

I wasn't around at the time, but I certainly wouldn't have any problem admitting to liking them - my parents were fans back in the day, so I've kinda grown up with it.

I found them deeply unctious to be honest. Karen could certainly sing, but it was all too 'nicey nicey' and we all know the truth was anything but.....

absolutely scott.... one or two tracks were pretty good, well sung, but their habit of merchandising sickly sweet pop became irritating. 'close to you' was great... 'top of the world' was embarrassingly sickly.

I'm just imagining what would've happened if Karen Carpenter had actually totally bared her soul on an album, I reckon the results wouldn't've been too far off the sort of sheer naked horror that Nirvana's "In Utero" or Manics' "The Holy Bible" were.....

Do any of you remember the early 1990s tribute album "If I Were A Carpenter"when various US Indie/Grunge Acts covered Carpenters songs?

They were one of the first bands I liked when I was younger!

Karen Carpenters voice is superb, and I still have a soft spot for them even now.

I used to have that! :o I dont know where it went though :(

Karen Carpenter had a superb voice and their songs had some great harmonies.

I've never felt bad admiting to liking their music ,even when aged 10 ,when Top of the World, Yesterday once more , etc were in the charts.

Calling Occupants was my favourite of them all.

Yes, superb. A class act.

Karen was such an inspiration even in her troubles. An amazing person.

I always liked The Carpenters , I don't think people worried about being cool in the seventies ^_^

I always think The Carpenters are wonderful. They're a chip off the old block.

Joking aside, i agree Karen has a great voice. I think the songs were classics, some of them did come over a bit too 'sweet' but suited them anyway.

They did something right though as they're fondly remembered by a lot of people.

Best female vocalist by a mile. Karen had such a beautiful tone, a pure voice with no need for vocal gymnastics.
