I remember the day he died - I went camping with my school and for half an hour I was going "OMG really?!"

08. THE DARK SIDE OF THE MOON- Pink Floyd

RELEASED: 1973

PEAK POSITION: 2

WKS ON CHART: 380

The highest placed non Number one on the list, it has of course recently been re-mastered and re-issued (I’m assuming sales will be added to this) and spend over 700 wks on the US albums chart. It was their 8th album but as noted did not add to their tally of 5 chart topping albums to date, it does however have one of the most recognisable covers of any album despite not bearing the title or the artist on it.

Not really as familiar with 'The Dark Side Of The Moon' as I perhaps should be. I've heard bits of it but I should really have a proper listen one day.
I've never really heard any Pink Floyd songs before - I can appreciate that it's a classic album though. :P :D

07. BROTHERS IN ARMS- Dire Straits

RELEASED: 1985

PEAK POSITION: 1

WKS ON CHART: 228

The biggest beast in the 80s albums collection is up next. Being one of the first albums to utilise the new format of the CD it was popularly rumoured that at one time it was difficult to get a CD produced as all the plants were churning out copies of this, which led to it being played in shops and in “HI-Fi shops” (those were the days) so it had a cornered market in one respect. The video for “Money For Nothing” was also the first one played on MTV Europe in 1985 making the opening sting sung line “I Want my MTV” forever connects with a certain generation.

My mum is a huge fan of Dire Straits so I'd imagine I've heard most of 'Brothers In Arms' without ever actively listening to it. Not a big fan of them to be honest.

Great to see Dire Straits in here  I love 'Walk Of Life' 'Money For Nothing' and 'Sultans Of Spring' and to a lesser extent 'Romeo and Juliet' (yes I know they're not all from the album Brothers In Arms :P)

06. 21- Adele

RELEASED: 2011

PEAK POSITION: 1

WKS ON CHART: 63

Easily the most recent addition to the top 40 biggest albums ever, the achievements of the set have been mulled over extensively on this site already. Needless to say it is the biggest selling album of 2011 and 2012 (currently) as well as the decade and the current century, never having left the top 10 in any of those 63 weeks including 21 wks in pole position. How much further can it climb?

I've never really heard any Pink Floyd songs before - I can appreciate that it's a classic album though. :P :D

I've never really heard any Dire Straits songs before - I don't think this is a classic album though!

Never head this one before...

Fifth album I own. The singles, along with Turning Tables and Dont You Remember are just fantastic! Really great album!

Adele? :o

Ah, here it is :D '21' is a great album, perhaps its success is a LITTLE bit over the top but it's fascinating to watch an album join the likes of legends as this is the first one I've been around to witness.
"Bad" is Michael Jackson's greatest album. The singles on it, are just beyond perfection. One of the best pop albums ever!

I prefer Thriller.

05. THRILLER- Michael Jackson

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/5/51/Michaeljacksonthrilleralbum.jpg

RELEASED: 1982

PEAK POSITION: 1

WKS ON CHART: 257

The album that transformed Jackson from just a pop star into a worldwide brand, and gave us the most expensive promo ever (at the time) for its lead track. Apparently this is the biggest selling ever worldwide and enabled black artists to get played on MTV which had been hesitant to promote them until this point, but by the end of the album Jacko was probably the most famous man on the planet. All of this after the less than impressive start the album made taking until week 11 for it to finally break the top 10, it ended the 80s as the third best seller though after moving over the 2 million mark.
