Posted April 11, 201213 yr No sure if anyone has been following this case but it has been US media sensation the past few weeks. Florida special prosecutor Angela Corey plans to announce as early as Wednesday afternoon that she is charging neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman in the shooting of Trayvon Martin, according to a law enforcement official close to the investigation. It was not immediately clear what charge Zimmerman will face. Martin, 17 and unarmed, was shot and killed Feb. 26 by Zimmerman, who said he was acting in self-defense. Police in Sanford, Fla., where the shooting took place, did not charge Zimmerman, citing the state’s “stand your ground” law. Corey told reporters Tuesday night that she would hold a news conference about the case within 72 hours. A news release from her office said the event will be held in Sanford or Jacksonville, Fla. just astonishing that you can kill a teen and just walk away scott free based on this stand your ground law, I hope Trayvons family get justice. http://news.blogs.cnn.com/2012/04/11/prose...n-on-zimmerman/
April 11, 201213 yr I hope the report is true. It really is shocking that Zimmerman hasn't even been arrested and questioned.
April 11, 201213 yr What I find most disturbing is the reaction of Zimmerman supporters to the question of whether the murder was racially motivated or not. "He can't be racist!!! He has HISPANIC ROOTS!!!". Also, I still can't quite grasp the concept that you can lawfully kill someone who is in any way a danger to you. For me, 'danger' is when a person is coming towards me with a chainsaw, not a bag of skittles and a bottle of iced tea. It will be really interesting to see where this goes. I just hope the shoddy handling of the case doesn't get in the way of justice.
April 12, 201213 yr Author The special prosecutor investigating the death of Florida teenager Trayvon Martin announced Wednesday evening that George Zimmerman, who told police he shot Martin in self defense, has been charged with second-degree murder. Zimmerman will plead not guilty to the charges, according to his attorneys. He faces up to life in prison if convicted. Zimmerman, who has been in hiding for weeks, is in police custody. Special prosecutor Angela Corey said during a news conference in Jacksonville, Why now, when so much evidence from the night has been lost, I hope Trayvons family have excellent lawyers.
April 24, 201213 yr Trayvon's family only need excellent lawyers if they are suing the state and/or Zimmerman. It's the state prosecutors that will be facing Zimmerman's lawyers in this trial. As for the stand your ground law, it's a bit of an over reach of the Castle Doctrine but sometimes it's existence is justifiable. Because of that I'd rather see justifiable homicide decisions taken by the state prosecutors on the available evidence rather than the shoot now, claim self defence later situation states like Florida are in. I personally have no problem with the Castle Doctrine.
