A new chart comprised from the sales of albums sold in independent record stores is to be launched on Friday (April 17).

The chart will be run alongside the Official UK Albums and Singles Chart by the Official Charts Company. It will be entirely calculated on physical sales from independent record shops.

The first ever chart will be unveiled at 5pm (GMT) on Friday (April 20) and will be counted down on Steve Lamacq’s BBC 6Music show between 5-6pm. Following this, the new weekly chart will be revealed at 7pm every Sunday at the Official Charts Company's official website.

Speaking about the launch of the chart, Official Charts Company Managing Director Martin Talbot said: "Independent record shops are more important than ever in helping introduce music fans to new, interesting music, so we are delighted to be working with the Record Store Day team to launch this chart."

Good stuff, it just proves that there is still a lot of interest in physical product. Personally I can't wait for Record Store Day on Saturday :w00t:
It's for show really, but sadly that is probably all the major independent retailers left in the country.

I think it's a great idea. It's the closest thing to the old indie chart we'll get. Yes, it's not just independent releases...but they haven't really existed since around 1992 when Nude, Hut etc. sprang up as 'pseudo-indie' brands and Creation got into bed with Sony. This will reflect what's being bought by people who don't just hop onto iTunes once a week to download all the songs they heard in The Voice / X-Factor / adverts.

Really looking forward to Record Shop Day too. I've a shopping list with 8 things on it. I feel like a teenager again!

I have 26 things on mine
The album chart is not going to make much difference though to the official, bit pointless

I had to hold back a little! Good luck in getting them all though :)

An excellent idea- its not clear from the article whether it will be for 7"/10"/12" singles or just for LPs sold but nonetheless I am definitely interested.

The last independent store I went into was Solo Records in Barnstaple, they used to have one in Exeter but that closed down.

I really hope there's a chart for vinyl singles while they're at it, yep. The link between charts and record shops has really been lost and this would help get things back again.

I used to love going into Woolworths 20-odd years ago and gazing at the top 40 on 7" in front of me. Would be nice to pop into One Up here in Aberdeen and look at the top 10 7" vinyls again. Nostalgic.

Same here, anything that helps that link between the shops and the charts is a good thing in the long run, although i can't see things going back to how they

were 20 years ago. I know vinyl is getting more popular but it's still only a niche market.

Even a chart for *all* physical singles sales would be nice. At least ChartsPlus already carries a Vinyl albums top 40 each week (which the Alabama Shakes topped last week).

Vinyl will never be anything more than a niche market for the nostalgic.

People wax lyrical over the 'warmth' of vinyl and you've got the sleeve notes and artwork too but give me CDs/downloads any day.

With vinyl you had the dust, the noise, the scratches, the warped discs and even the odd breakage.

People of today's generation will never know the heart-rending noise as the stylus tears itself across the face of your favourite album.

Who, seriously, would want to go back to all that?

I've recently been converting my old vinyl albums to MP3's, and I'm amazed at how well they've lasted - not one of them has been damaged enough to make sections unplayable.

Exactly. Vinyls are far more durable than compact discs I think - at least a pop and a crackle here and there is better than a marked CD that just keeps repeating the same section or jumping about between tracks.
